Title: IN-DePauw University/Howey Politics: Pence (R) up 13 against Gregg (D)
Post by: Tender Branson on April 05, 2012, 12:06:19 PM
In the first head-to-head numbers in the Indiana gubernatorial race, U.S. Rep. Mike Pence had a 44-31% lead over former Democratic House speaker John Gregg, with 5% backing Libertarian Rupert Boneham. Gregg's problem is that 71% of the general election voters have not heard of him. Of those who have, his fav/infavs stood at 10/4%. Pence's fav/unfavs in this survey stood at 32/20% with 30% having never heard of him. Among the Republican primary voters, Pence's fav/unfavs stood at 57/5%. In 1996, Lt. Gov. O'Bannon trailed Republican Stephen Goldsmith by a larger margin than Gregg trails Pence. Pence's challenge will be that anemic 10% approval rating for Congress.

This race will not be an easy win for Republicans like many expect. Gregg is a very good statewide candidate for Democrats - once he gets his name recognition up the race will tighten.

This is one race I'll have some difficulty on, as I personally know both candidates. Meh..

Something inside me tells me this poll has drastically undershot Pence's current margins, and it being a uni poll doesn't help matters any.

Still, I suppose I couldn't say unless I lived in Indiana.

Since Joe Andrews retired from state politics in IN, the Dems don't have a statewide Democratic figure like O'Bannon or Joe Andrews, sad but true.
