President Bingu wa Mutharika of Malawi has died, doctors and cabinet ministers have told the BBC, but the lack of a formal announcement is leading to widespread anxiety.

Mr Mutharika, 78, suffered a cardiac arrest on Thursday and state media say he was flown to South Africa for treatment.

Probably for the best. The way he'd been acting of late was not very beneficial to Malawi.  He was starting to turn into another Mugabe.  He lived a full live, died peacefully, and Malawi hopefully will be able to avoid becoming a basketcase.

Any sense of a possible coup seems to be passing. A section of the cabinet have tried to sideline the Vice President, but it seems clear that she will succeed to the Presidency.
