Title: U.S. teen pregnancy rates at an all-time low across all ethnicities

The rate of teenagers becoming mothers is declining rapidly, according to a new report published by the Centers for Disease Control  and Prevention (CDC). The average teen birth rate decreased 9 percent from 2009 to 2010, reaching an all time low of 34.3 births per 1,000 women aged 15 to 19.

That's a 44 percent drop from 1991 to 2010. There were less teenage mothers in 2010 than any year since 1946.

What's behind the reduced rates? The CDC claims that the effective use at prevention messages has helped stop teenage pregnancy. Both increased use of contraception and use of two methods of birth control (usually birth control polls and condoms) at once have been observed.

Putting a 15-yr old single mother and a married 19-yr old in the same category is kinda silly, especially when making a comparison with figures from two generations ago.

Have the general population's birth rates dropped because of the recession?

I could only find data up to 2009 (guess they haven't compiled 2010 yet?): http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvsr/nvsr60/nvsr60_01.pdf

What? Abstinence is the worst thing you can do in life (Worse than murder).

We decided that he was some kind of postmodernist, I think.

The rate of adolescent pregnancy in this country is still nearly double that of Canada's and nearly quadruple that of most European nations.

Meaning that he's very much on the endangered species list these days.

Hence why we must conserve him, as a testament to the living history of the Academy.

I don't know whether modernism-as-commonly-done or postmodernism-as-commonly-done pisses me off more, but this man is an Atlas Forum treasure.

It's interesting, isn't it, that postmodernism as an approach to a creative process still has a lot of life in it (and will probably never go away), but that as an approach to academic processes... it's a bit like shoulder pads, ill-advised electronic music and Margaret Thatcher, no?

Exactly. I don't really know what to call what's going on in most of academia at this point, except in many areas 'capitulation to neoliberalism', because I'm a discipline, Asian studies, that's always sort of marched to its own drumbeat so I'm doing more or less exactly the sort of stuff that, for example, Doris Bargen was doing twenty and thirty years ago, only with a slightly different kind of critical theory, but postmodernism seems to have kind of gone out with Jacques Derrida's natural lifespan if not somewhat before (I tend to think somewhat before, actually) in most of the fields with which I'm at all familiar.

Yes, yes, jolly-ho, postmodernism on the buoy and whatnot.

Anyway, it's obvious the reversal of the Bush Admin's abstinence only plan is what caused this immediate drop.

Pregnancy rate and birth rate aren't the same.  CBS's wording on this is a bit poor, as it doesn't factor in abortions.

Me thinks you might be slightly missinformed.  Yes, there were a couple of "Abstinence only" Federally funded programs, but neither were particularly widespread.  One was passed under Clinton and the other under a Democratic House and Senate.  They were both wrong and stupid and a waste of govt funds (just over $1 billion between 1996 and 2006), but studies have shown that kids, whether taught Abstinence only or regular sex education have sex at about the same time, about the same amount and use contraceptives at about the same rate.

Some kids/people are idiots, education can only help so much.
