Title: How would you have voted? Russia
Post by: Jerseyrules on April 23, 2012, 04:51:24 PM
Basically all elections.  Say if you would've voted for Medvedev or Putin, provided the former was a candidate this year.

So just to be clear, in a race Putin v. Medvedev v. all other candidates, everyone would still choose the minor candidates?  Interesting; I know little about Russian politics, but what about a strictly Putin vs. Medvedev race?

They won't run aganist each other. They are from the one St. Petesburg team. Most of Russian officials and federal ministers worked with Vlad for 10-20 years before the work in Moscow ;)

Well yeah because Medvedev is a puppet and would get a rearranged face if he tried, but I'm saying putting realism in a closet for the time being, who would you prefer?  Who do you like better?  If I'm not mistaken, you live in RU don't you?

NO. I always support opposition candidates. To be honest, if there was a Putin vs. Zyuganov (commie leader) run-off, I'd vote Zyuganov.

Probably straight ticket Communist since 1991, Yeltsin in 1991. In a Putin vs Medvedev matchup I would vote Medvedev simply because he isn't a moralfag like Putin.

If you're dedicated enough to vote only for Yabloko before 2011 you'd have voted for them in 2011 especially considering that A Just Russia is a manufactured party supported by the Kremlin to get left-wing voters to not vote for the Communists or the Democratic parties.

i know, but they were less awful for a few years before 2011, and no democratic party had a chance

Not the easiest country to translate my politics to.

Presidential
1991: Boris Yeltsin (Independent)
1996: Grigory Yavlinsky (Yabloko)
1996 (runoff): Boris Yeltsin (Independent) - No hindsight

1999: Yabloko
2003: Yabloko
2007: Yabloko**
2011: A Just Russia**
2016: Yabloko**

*I mean, in all likelihood if I had grown up in Russia, I would have probably voted for Medvedev, and probably Putin once or twice, but I'm imagining this list as someone who randomly up and moved to Russia and got citizenship c. 1990.

** Basically a strategic voter in these elections. Yabloko is probably closest to my political beliefs, but I'd switch to A Just Russia if I thought it had a significantly better shot at viability.

Quote
A Just Russia declared absolute opposition to Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's government, voting against the government's budgets in 2010 and 2011, while remaining strongly supportive of President Dmitry Medvedev and his modernisation programme.

Medvedev is not good, to be clear. A Just Russia is a front party led by a man who was Chairman of the Federation Council, the third highest ranking Russian position, from 2001-2011, and who said, "We all want Vladimir Putin to be the next President."

Wikipedia says:
Quote
On 25 July 2014, amidst an armed insurgency in Eastern Ukraine, the Ukrainian Interior Ministry launched criminal proceedings against Mironov for alleged financial support to the armed insurgents.

The only two strongly anti-Kremlin parties are Yabloko and Civic Platform. The People's Freedom Party and the Party of Growth are also mostly anti-Putin and anti-Medvedev.

Not sure if your statement about Civic Platform would be true even in 2012 or 2013, but now it's just a corpse. Prokhorov lost control of it and it became an irrelevant United Russia puppet (it's new leader got a seat in Duma only because United Russia intentionally didn't field it's candidate there).
