Title: Anybody up for a President Lieberman TL?
Post by: Jerseyrules on May 07, 2012, 05:03:59 PM
It's never been done before, from what I've seen.  So what if Gore was elected President in 2000, with Lieberman as VP, defeated in 2004, then Lieberman comes back and wins in 2008?  He would do well in the Democratic primaries (with Gore's endorsement), and perhaps with John McCain's as well; maybe even John McCain as VP or Secretary of Defense.  What do you think?

(Obviously it would be easier for Lieberman to win in 2008 as the incumbent VP but this scenario just seems more realistic to me.  Or he could be picked for VP by Cinton in 1992, and run as the incumbent VP in 2000.)

I like it. An interesting twist would be a "Battle of the Centrists" TL, with Giuliani being the one to defeat Gore in 2004 and setting up a Giuliani vs. Lieberman battle in 2008.

Sounds kinda like this year ;)

What about an alternative Election 2000 scenario in which there's a 269-269 electoral college tie, and the House deadlocks on electing a president, but the Senate elects Lieberman as VP....thus causing Lieberman to step in as acting prez?  9/11 and the beginning of the War on Terror then happens at a time when the POTUS is a Democratic hawk, who also happens to be Jewish.

Man, I already had something like that planned (but with a diff. '08 candidate).

If its who I think it is, then they wouldn't run against each other

What if the states vote the same, 1 Bush elector votes for McCain, and 1 for Lieberman or Nader?  Or both for McCain?  That would reduce W. to the deadlock-required 269 EVs.  But I'm not certain of the constitutionality of that; I'll have to ask my history teacher

Or Gore wins in 2000 and happens to be visiting the Pentagon on September 11.

Listening to LyingMan in the 2004 Democratic debates was just awful. It was so painfully obvious that he was pants on fire lying every time he opened his mouth.

Actually, that one's a really good idea.  An alt-timeline in which the president dies on 9/11, and the VP has to take over.  You could either change the details of the 9/11 plot so that the assassination was planned, or you could make it a coincidence.

As much as I cringe at the possibility, I would be interested to see how it plays out. :P

Thanks. :) And while the above 9/11 suggestion sounds great, I have instead made Lieberman Slick Willy's VP, after a brutal primary campaign against gore in 92 (and gore resigns his senate seat to focus on the campaign, and if I recall he was having some personal issues at the time as well, so it seems logical he'd pick one job to focus on completely)

You can see it in the main thread, its called "Hello Joe!", changed from "A Democrat with Balls!"
