Title: What is your ideology?

Took me a bit to come up with this list.

You've got three votes, 45 choices.

Go nuts.

Socialist, agrarian socialist, and feminist was my third because there weren't any other options that I was more comfortable with (though if something like 'liberation theology' or 'Christian socialist' was an option I would have put that third and feminist fourth).

(Democratic) Socialist
Environmentalist
Reformist

Others: world federalist / cosmopolitanist, humanitarianist, multiculturalist, constitutional republican & personist with a multitude of lesser influences (e.g., Trotskyism, social democracy, social liberalism, progressivism, secular humanism, ordoliberalism, internationalism, corporatism, market socialism, ecosocialism, feminism, and so forth).

Title: Re: What is your ideology?
Post by: Redalgo on May 09, 2012, 05:26:07 PM

My understanding is that Islamic socialism combines moral teachings from the prophet Muhammad and Islamic scripture with a welfare regime, solid opposition to imperialism, and principles drawn from democratic socialism. This stands in contrast to both theocracies that try to rule by religious mandate and secular flavors of socialism. It would be a sort of spiritual equivalent to Christian socialism or maybe some interpretations of labour zionism.

Post by: Marokai Backbeat on May 09, 2012, 05:30:03 PM
Of these listed, I suppose I feel the most comfortable picking: Socialist, Populist, Reformist. Others apply too but I feel like those jump out to me the most.

I, of course, am personally socially liberal, but when it comes to placing my political positions I tend to view most of them as irrelevant. I feel comfortable enough in my politics at this point to openly state that I could vote for an out-and-out Rick Santorum-social conservative if I was getting a true economic leftist. (Though, I would only do so in the absence of other good and realistic options.)

I'm also baffled at how many times "Social Democracy" is left off of these lists. It's one of the most common ideologies in the world, how do people keep omitting it?

Title: Re: What is your ideology?

I'm reassured by the fact that so far 'socialist' is beating 'classical liberal'.  Of course, you included 'liberal' so who knows what those that voted for that meant by it.

It is probably because people in the States often lump social democrats and democratic socialists into a broader category of "socialists," and sometimes include social liberalists too as a way of scoring cheap political points. xD

sorry buddy but you don't have any knowledge or interest in Marx or Marxism.

You're wrong, I'm interested in criticisms of capitalism which are typically categorized as 'Marxis', Tweed, most of which can be viewed in numerous very basic textbooks or wikipedia.  You'll find that most things in life are easily summed up and not as special as you may like to believe - and remember, even the young maybe boring.

Title: Re: What is your ideology?
Post by: © tweed on May 09, 2012, 06:14:17 PM
your use of 'boring' as synonymous with rigor or care or effort is, at best, an over-application of the subjective.  I can quote the master himself: "There is no royal road to science, and only those who do not dread the fatiguing climb of its steep paths have a chance of gaining its luminous summits".  don't kid yourself into believing your affected laziness leaves nothing untouched on the other side of the hill.

Populism is a rhetorical strategy that consists of appealing to the will & the good of the "people". You can approach literally any ideological strain in a populist fashion.

It's a certain style or way of doing politics which consists of (demagogic) appeals to "the people" against some sort of elite. Hence left-wing populism, right-wing populism and so forth.

Though I don't necessarily believe Populism is a totally vacuous term when it comes to political ideology, the question this thread posed allowed people to pick Populism as part of a multiple choice answer, which I think excuses it in this case. Think of picking populism in this thread as a supplementary sort of answer to your other "main" ideological choices.

Title: Re: What is your ideology?
Post by: TNF on May 09, 2012, 11:16:33 PM
Paleoliberal, Socialist, Nationalist.

I feel iffy using 'Socialist', if only because I identify with social democracy very strongly. I do not think that. And by 'Paleoliberal', I mean pre-1970s liberalism in the United States, which is essentially social democracy.

Essentially, I am for guns and butter, for equal rights and individual liberty, for a social market economy, and am an 'Owl' with regard to foreign policy (moderate interventionist). I am culturally conservative in that I reject multiculturalism, but I don't identify with conservatism otherwise. I am not a moderate in that my economic views are to the left of every major Democratic officeholder. I think that Libertarianism and Marxism/Communism are just as bad as Fascism/Nazism, so I would never identify with any of their variant forms. I detest the word 'Progressive'; it's a cop-out for liberals who are afraid of the 'L word' in American politics. Environmentalism tends to mean opposition to nuclear power and GM food, so that's a no-go as well. I'm mixed on calling myself a feminist; I'd be more comfortable calling myself an 'Egalitarian'.

As for the others...no, just, no. Anarchism is idealism turned up to eleven and would never, ever work in real life. Neoconservatism is awful, Paleoconservatism is even worse. Strict Constitutionalism is no better than religious fundamentalism. I don't even know what 'reformist' means, so I can't vote for that one. Is Agrarian Socialism the stuff of Pol Pot/Mao? Monarchism is beyond stupid. Any ideology with 'Eco' in it automatically gets a 'no'. Classical Liberalism is outdated, Neoliberalism is bad too. I would never call myself a 'Market Liberal' or a Republican. I'm a registered member of the Democratic Party.

Zionism I don't have a problem with. Third Wayism...no. Jingoism...also no.

I think I am a moderate or liberal libertarian.  I took the political compass quiz in 2008 and I was nearest to Hillary Clinton idealogy wise on social issues and close to John McCain and Mike Huckabee on economic idealogy. OnThe Issues.org had me as a liberal libertarian. I guess I have to put myself in a political party I would say progressive or liberal republican maybe.

I also selected Moderate and feminist in addition to the liberal libertarian on the poll.
