Er, no psychology, the most common major on college campuses? :P

Categories are based only on my expectations. Other than you and Xahar, I don't know of any posters who have mentioned studying psychology or its related fields.

Oh, I studied Psychology at the beginning, until I realized that it was basically a scam concocted by psychos or near psychos who needed to find a job.  And then I moved on to Poli Sci, that chaotic largely anecdotal field where quantitatively challenged folks play with numbers trying to pretend they got better than a "C" in algebra.  That lasted until I realized it was yet another scam, this time concocted by insensitive mono-dimensional megalomaniacs. And then after a detour into the Humanities (the less said about that the better), I found Economics, which rather hyperbolically calls itself a "science," but then it did muscle its way into its own category for the Nobel Prize so don't mess with it, or it may hurt you). Unlike with the first trio of clunkers, I really liked its act, in particular the one that most elegantly provided a moral justification as to why there are rich people and poor people, and that making money is good, and taxing it too much is bad. Eureka, this is the place said I to myself! Why did it take me so long?!  And then I found the law, the game there being to make it all so magnificently complex with tons of pretentious Latin and French (those damn Normans) words and phrases, the better to create barriers to entry to the masses, and increase the going hourly billing rate.  There I honed my skills as to how to make many folks poorer, and myself richer, all in accordance with that glorious invisible hand (except of course to the cognoscenti of whom I was now one, per my above referenced penultimate field of study, for whom the hand was not only visible, but fisted). My current field of study is not appropriate to discuss here. I think that about sums it up.

Other - E-Commerce.  My major was very young at my school when I matriculated in June 2001.  It was one of the very few schools in the country to offer that as a major and it was only in its second year of being offered at Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, Oklahoma.  I think the only big-name school I can think of that offered it was Clemson.  Unfortunately, E-Commerce is no longer offered as a degree program at NWOSU, so usually when I put down on resumes what my degree was, I'll switch between Business and Computer Science, usually the latter which was my minor.

Changed a few times.  I started out as a computer science major.  I had written statistics programs in BASIC on Apple iic-s and e-s for my school's sports teams when I was in high school, and figured I could make a career out of it.  After two and a half years of that, I got bored out of my skull learning how to do the same stuff in seven languages and simple heuristics in Prologue.  Plus, my dad died when I was 20, and I figured I should do something that interested me.  I was already interested in philosophy, but no philosophy major in my hometown, so I switched, intending to double-major in history and English.  Did that for a year and a half, then transferred to UND and finished a double-major in philosophy and religious studies in one year before going to grad school.

Where does modern end and contemporary begin?

Modernism in art peters out around 1950, modernism in architecture lasts maybe 15 years longer. The usage of the term 'modern' in books of the English language, according to Google's Ngram Viewer, peaks between 1930 and 1935. The term 'postmodern' begins its takeoff in the 1940s or 1950s. Are these the kinds of markers used to denote the difference? But then again, if that is our criteria then say, the year 1975, is neither modern nor contemporary.

Henri Pirenne rides (somewhat surreally given his main period, but that's not the point) to the rescue, as remembered by Marc Bloch:

Quote
I had gone with Henri Pirenne to Stockholm; we had scarcely arrived, when he said to me: 'What shall we go to see first? It seems that there is a new city hall here. Let's start there.' Then, as if to ward off my surprise, he added: 'If I were an antiquarian, I would have eyes only for the old stuff, but I am a historian. Therefore, I love life.'

A major is a subject that you choose to specialize in when you recieve your bachelor's degree. Different professions require different majors (to be a teacher you would major in education, for instance). There are a certain number of classes dealing with the subject that you are required to take and then when you graduate your diploma says you majored in the subject.

Minors are similar to majors in that they have a certain number of required classes that you have to take and your diploma will say you minored in a subject, but the number of classes required is less than required for a major and most professions don't require you to minor in something.
Sometimes colleges will limit the number of majors and minors you can have, sometimes they won't. A lot of people don't minor in anything, and a lot of people with have two or three majors with a minor (or two) in there as well. Everyone has to have a major, but no one has to have a minor.

To answer your specific question, I'd assume you'd major in architecture (probably minor in either interior design or civil engineering or some such thing).

Its nice to know there are a few of us here - though the others are apparently Anshiviviki and Gustaf.

But I'm surprised I'm apparently the only 'English Major' on the site.  Reading the great novels, short stories poetry, etc., is a lot better education for a gentleman than learning about economics or politics or how to fix a computer or particle accelerator.  Its not learning Greek or Latin admittedly, but its still pretty good.

If I could do it all over again, I'd probably have been an astrophysics or astronautical engineering major...or maybe civil engineering. I really needed the economics though; it helped me rediscover my love of math, but now that I have it, I feel like I should be doing more with it. It doesn't really help that my courses are really easy. Grass is always greener I guess.

I have Human Geography as my major and minor studies are social policy, sociology, economics and gender studies.

A few more sociology and and econ courses would have strengthened my background significantly. As it is, I never took a course beyond the intro level in either discipline. It's probably my biggest regret as a geography major, especially as I'm interested in heading in a public policy direction with my graduate studies.

Yeah, I really think that sociology has strengthened my background on some issues in my major. Now I'm thinking about Border crossing studies, because it's one speciality in my university and it's one possible masters program for me.
