Title: Most ideologically distant senators from the same state
Post by: old timey villain on September 07, 2012, 12:09:01 AM
There are many states with a Republican Senator and a Democratic Senator. Sometimes they still line up ideologically, despite party differences. For instance, Mark Pryor (D) and John Boozman (D) of Arkansas are both on the conservative side. Scott Brown (R) is not totally politically opposite from John Kerry (D).

Can anyone think of two senators of different parties from the same state who are like night and day?

Johnson and Thune in South Dakota come to mind. Also, Johnson and Kohl in Wisconsin.

I'd say Brown and Portman from Ohio should also be on the list.

What about Harkin/Grassley?

Toomey/Casey; other than being pro-life (and not nearly to his father's extent), Casey is rather similar to Sherrod Brown, and Toomey is very conservative (though admittedly has done a good job, even if I dislike his views).

For two Republicans, I could go with McConnell and Paul or Graham and DeMint. The only two Democrats I can think of who significantly contrast are Boxer and Feinstein.

We had John Edwards along side Jesse Helms. For same-party, Specter/Santorum was about as much as Casey/Toomey.

i made a thread on this back in March. Currently it would probably be Brown/Portman but of all time it would probably be Wellstone and Grams from 1995-2000.
