Title: Romney campaign in a mess; cancels FL event after stupid statement.
Post by: User157088589849 on September 12, 2012, 09:16:21 AM
Romneys event in Jacksonville is currently all over the place. From being in a happy rallying mood they have ushered everyone out and scrambled together some american flags so he can make a statement. This was decided at 09.30ET. At 09.00ET republicans were dancing and clapping to music...what changed Mitt comments last night have gone viral and its full blown damage control.

The guy is just not fit to be President. In the heat of the moment he has no discipline. He says things without any thought when unprepared.

So what's going on with Romney and the embassy situation? He is taking back his hasty remarks?

No, he reiterated them (but they are remarks Obama has been distancing himself from).

I conclude, then, that so long as Fortune varies and men stand still, they will prosper while they suit the times, and fail when they do not.

Which comments?  Sorry, I've been out of the loop for a few hours, and haven't caught whatever virus is going viral.

The embassy did the right thing in their situation. And Romney has no right to attack them (or Obama lol).

Between a movie filmed in California denouncing Islam and attacks on the US consulate in Benghazi inspired by said film, the US Embassy in Cairo issued a statement (http://www.cbc.ca/news/yourcommunity/2012/09/us-embassy-in-egypt-deletes-tweets-condemning-anti-muslim-film-1.html) on twitter condemning attempts at disrespecting other religions, targeted at the film.

Romney believed the Embassy's tweets were issued in response to the consulate attack and thus focused on criticizing the administration for "apologizing." (http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0912/81098.html?hp=t1_7) He repeated this claim between official statements on the attack by Clinton and Obama.

Oh yeah, I knew all of that.  Didn't think it was a big enough deal to "go viral" or whatever.  Come on, there's no evidence to suggest that whatever scheduling issues Romney has with this event in Florida is because of the embassy issue, is there?

From what I know the rally was switched around so Romney could make his big statement on the attacks, then pulled because they realized it would be at the same time as the official statements... then reinstated between the two statements anyway.

His speech is going viral because it's callously political and inappropriate and focused completely on an inaccurate talking point: at least, that is how I would put it. Reactions on this forum to it are a lot milder than I thought they would be.

The worst part, of course, is that the Embassy's tweets occurred before the attacks.  To me, this whole mess says a lot about the state of the Romney campaign.  It comes across as desperate, trying to twist any issue and use it for political gain.  They could not even wait for the facts to come in before attacking Obama.

It looks like plenty of Republicans are criticizing the Romney campaign for its response now as well.  The irony of this whole thing, is that it should not have been political in any way, but I believe it made the president look presidential in comparison to his challenger.

Note:  I removed the links in the quoted post.  I'm new and the forum would not allow me to post links.

To be honest, I think there is so much viciousness from both sides, that I really didn't notice.

Today's headlines:
 AMERICANS KILLED IN LIBYA
Romney campaign links attacks to Obama's failed Middle East policies...
 White House gave 'mixed signals'...
Romney: I Wouldn't Turn Down Netanyahu Meeting...
New Tracking Poll:  CONVENTION BOUNCE GONE: O 46% R 45%...

I don't see anything negative or politically fatal for Romney or Obama.

http://www.buzzfeed.com/bensmith/foreign-policy-hands-voice-disbelief-at-romney-cai

Quote
"They were just trying to score a cheap news cycle hit based on the embassy statement and now it’s just completely blown up," said a very senior Republican foreign policy hand, who called the statement an "utter disaster" and a "Lehman moment" — a parallel to the moment when John McCain, amid the 2008 financial crisis, failed to come across as a steady leader.

He and other members of both parties cited the Romney campaign's recent dismissals of foreign policy's relevance. One adviser dismissed the subject to BuzzFeed as a "shiny object," while another told Politico that the subject was the "president's turf," drawing a rebuke from Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol.

"I guess we see now that it is because they’re incompetent at talking effectively about foreign policy," said the Republican. "This is just unbelievable — when they decide to play on it they completely bungle it."

Romney has not backed off the response — "It's never too early for the United States government to condemn attacks on Americans and to defend our values," he said Wednesday — but his campaign faces a near consensus in Republican foreign policy circles that, whatever the sentiment, Romney faltered badly.

"It's bad," said a former aide to Senator John McCain's 2008 presidential campaign. "Just on a factual level that the statement was not a response but preceding, or one could make the case precipitating. And just calling it a 'disgrace' doesn't really cut it. Not ready for prime time."

A third Republican, a former Bush State Department official, told BuzzFeed, "It wasn't presidential of Romney to go political immediately — a tragedy of this magnitude should be something the nation collectively grieves before politics enters the conversation."
But the third official defended the substance of Romney's words: "Romney's attack is spot-on — disgusting that the first Obama administration impulse was to apologize instead of condemning violent religious intolerance. Obama's gotten a real pass on his intervention in Libya, his failed strategy in Afghanistan, and his lack of leadership in the aftermath of the Arab Spring. By trying to cut it down the middle in his foreign policy, no one knows where or for what Obama or America stands in the world these days."

The Republicans declined to speak for attribution, for fear of being publicly disloyal to their party's nominee. Veteran Democratic foreign policy hands, operating under no such restriction, called Romney's quick move all but disqualifying.

"He did jump the gun. It revealed yet again that his foreign policy team is not ready for prime time," said David Rothkopf, a former Clinton State Department official. "It is ugly and amateurish. It also seems strangely out of character with Romney who elsewhere in the campaign seems inclined to be restrained to a fault."

Heather Hurlburt, who heads the National Security Network, a Democratic group, said the statement "shows not just poor judgment and a willingness to use tragedy for political gains, regardless of the security consequences — but also poor management. He has policy people on his team who know better. Clearly they weren't consulted."

"As someone who worked at state and with diplomats for many years, it makes me feel sick," she said.

"Romney blew it and revealed how seriously maladroit he is when it comes to foreign affairs and national security," said Steve Clemons, the founder of the American Strategy Program at the New America Foundation. "An attack on an Embassy, the murder of U.S. officials including an Ambassador, is an attack on all Americans and the idea of America — and Romney gave terrorists what they want — a divided country still torn emotionally and politically by the events of 9-11. Romney talks of leadership but with his reckless commentary when events were fragile and still unfolding, he belly-flopped."

I've heard that Bill Kristol was saying negatives about Romney.

Not true: http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/romney-right_652223.html

One can question the timing and tone of Mitt Romney’s statement last night. One can note he wasn't as fluent and clear as he might have been at his press conference this morning. Still, the fact remains that the events of September 11, 2012, represent a big moment for the country. Romney is right to sense this, and to seize on this moment as an occasion to explain the difference between his foreign policy and President Obama’s. He’s right to reject the counsel of the mainstream media, which is to keep quiet and give President Obama a pass.

Desperate campaign is desperate.

ETA: Also, the idea of Mitt Romney as Commander in Chief is quickly moving from laughable to terrifying.

Remeber what I said about his inane comment on the number of ships in the US Navy?  I knew way back then this guy should not be given the nuclear button.  Private equity guys should not be in charge of the military.

Quote from: Romney
I’m outraged by the attacks on American diplomatic missions in Libya and Egypt and by the death of an American consulate worker in Benghazi. It’s disgraceful that the Obama Administration’s first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks.

What an idiot.

Quote from: cbsnews.com
"Do you realize our Navy is now smaller than any time since 1917? Our Air Force is older and smaller than any time since it was founded in 1947," Romney said. "We have always, since the days of FDR, we've had the capacity to fight two wars at a time, not that we wanted to, but we wanted to have that kind of safety and capacity to defend ourselves. This president is changing that policy saying, 'Oh no, we'll only be able to fight one war at a time.'"

PolitFact said each of the final four years under George W. Bush's term as president saw lower levels of active ships than any of the three years under President Obama. It also said that his statement about the size of the Air Force was credible, but military experts agree that counting the number of ships or aircraft is not a good measurement of defense strength because their capabilities have increased dramatically in recent decades (http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-57367919-503544/romney-makes-debatable-claims-about-military/).

I think Castro summed it up best...

() (http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-202_162-57365991/castro-gop-primary-a-competition-of-idiocy/)

I was concerned about Cain, Bachmann, or Palin getting the nuclear button but it appears they were just a distraction to keep us from realizing the true lunacy of Mitt Romney.
