Chafee is going to become a Democrat before the primary or just not seek re-election.

I wish we wouldn't run anyone against Chafee; we'd be shooting ourselves in the foot.  We'd lose our closest ally from the other side.

And he really is a Republican; he feels more strongly about economic issues than he does about social.  I hope he doesn't party switch, either.

His economic views aren't conservative though, pretty much a moderate on economic issues, and a liberal on social issues

384 is just a joke...

It's funny since Langevin is about as liberal as Chafee is economically, but a great deal more populist socially. I can't imagine Langevin supporting abortion and gay marriage to the extent that Chafee does.

In short, I'd feel the same way about Chafee's defeat as I did Connie Morella's 2002 defeat in MD, namely nothing.

I would support this only in exchange for the GOP not running anyone against Ben Nelson.

How about we run somebody against Ben Nelson and you have Ben Nelson get rid of that Chuck Hagel slime?  It's a win-win for Nebraska!

That would be a deal.

Chafee has his re-election web site up... McConnell did a fundraiser for him.

Losing Linc would be a terrible day for my Party and the nation.  Democrats are such scum.  Why can't you "people" make yourselves useful and start attacking extremists instead.

And what happens if Chafee wants to make sure he wins re-election and becomes a Dem (I think that's what will happen)? Still a loss for our party?

What's funny is that then htmldon would think Chafee was a total idiot.

Technically, yes, that would be a loss for the party.  Of one vote to be exact :P

Yes, I would.  Defecting to the enemy is a stupid thing to do.

Funny. What I meant was would you see it as losing a great, valuable member?

Chafee voting with "the enemy" most of the time isn't stupid?

Yes, that is also stupid.

But at least he votes with us more than a Democrat would, and votes for our majority leader.

Unless Carceri decided that he wanted to run for Senate, Chafee is the only Republican who could win.  You should be happy to have a Republican representing a state that was Gore's #1 state and Kerry's #2.

I'm sure I'd prefer him over other RI Dems but I'll be honest that if he retires or gets beat, I won't miss him.

By the way, I wish Carceri would run but that's unlikely.
