Title: What should I have for dinner?
Post by: Simfan34 on March 19, 2014, 03:27:41 PM
I was leaning towards the escargots but now I don't know.

Asking for advice here is the dumbest thing anyone can do, you realize that, Simi?  ;)

Pad Thai.

: (  Now I'm getting nostalgic for a certain thread about dinner that could never be the same.

Pad Thai.

Interestingly, we are wondering about dinner as well.  We don't often go out to eat, but tonight we are considering doing so as well.  We have eaten at five of the seven Vietnamese restaurants in Lancaster, both Indian places, all three Thai places, and about a zillion Chinese places.  (Yes, we eat Asian food often, but we also eat European White Trash food as well.  For example, Old Country Buffet does a FreeKids! night every Thursday, but today is Wednesday.)  As it turns out, there's a new "pan-Asian fusion" place just about a 500-meter walk from my crib, and I'm voting for that one.  Their on-line menu features pad thai, actually.  I'll go for their rare fish, though.  I started drinking early today, and have had about six cocktails with tequila blanco, cointreau, and lime juice since I started posting.  Luckily, the place we're going is within walking distance.

Among the choices you mention, I'd go with Pad Thai.  I'll give the snails an honorable mention, and in fact if I hadn't already had about a half a liter of tequila in my tummy, I might even vote for that one, or even the TexMex cheesy one.  As it is, however, I say Pad Thai.

God damnit, angus, you're gonna puke if you put pad thai in your tequila filled gut.   RIP, brother, RIP.

Spring Break started today!!!!

Well, technically it started on Monday, but I had 72 lab reports on the distribution coefficients and 36 exams over quantum mechanics to grade.  I just finished all that today and posted the grades.  I'd probably have finished long ago if I hadn't been posting here.  Anyway, now I'm in spring break mode in earnest.

Seriously, though, among those choices, Pad Thai is the one I could choke down most easily now.  I can assure you this.  I speak from experience.  I've definitely decided upon my own choice for tonight as well:  hibachi shrimp with fried rice and "vegetables" with miso soup.

I'm afraid my desire for the escargots is growing.

In other news, angus is the best.

One of you English blokes will need to explain to us, on of these days, what the meaning of Pease porridge hot, pease porridge cold, pease porridge in the pot nine days old really means.

I haven't thought of that rhyme in years, but your post stirs the memory.  Is there any significance of the nine-day-old part?

Then I should rule out Pad Thai, since it can include mammalian flesh.

gastropods are kosher for you?  If so, I guess that leaves us with snails!  Problem solved.

It can be eaten hot (generally when first made) or cold. I tend to prefer it cold.

I think it means that you're so poor that you're having to eat nine-day old pease pudding. The stuff lasts for ages though. I have occasionally fried pease pudding that's a few days old. Not bad.

Ah, yes.  We have split-pea soup.  I think it's similar, and some folks do like it cold.  As for the poor, we have the McDonald's Value Menu.  Similar nutritional value, but with more cardboard for taste.

Not with shrimp! Or just plain.

And indeed, snail is kosher. :P

As a cold-blooded animal, alligator—-like frog and snail—-is incontestable lenten fare. ”Salt and freshwater species of fish, amphibians, reptiles, (cold-blooded animals) and shellfish are permitted,” says the website of U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Now, should one find oneself in danger of being eaten  by  an alligator—-during Lent or otherwise—-one can take a cue from St. Margaret the Virgin. When Satan disguised as a large reptile swallowed Margaret, a cross she was wearing so irritated his innards that he was forced to disgorge the saint.

Ah, we ended up at Isaac's Deli.  I had a reuben and a small side of chicken noodle soup and potato chips.

It was all very Kosher, but now I'm bloated from carbs and vinegar.

I know you've given up meat for Lent, but I have to throw this out there: You can go on a diet and eat 4 sloppy joes!  (Poking fun at myself)

Oh stop it. ;)

Apparently it is "Macaron Day". I plan to take advantage of this.

Ha ha, a perfect desert with a glass of port that i'll be having after my disgustingly large and rare ribeye.

It was my Portuguese friend's birthday yesterday, I feel I should have gotten him some port. A bit cliched, but whatever. Of course there would have been a few... logistical problems. :P

Too young? Portugese ports are awesome.  That reminds me, when Mrs. Grumps is out of town next week there is this Portugese restaurant I love but she doesn't like.  Mess call there for sure!

I'm thinking about going to Golden Corale tommorow. Too bad all my friends hate it and the only friend who does like it is at an Anime convention in Orlando. When he gets back, I'll go with him maybe.

So thankfully, I got the shirts exchanged without much hassle. Sadly, the macarons were terrible and not actually free. They were chewy and hard, I took the first bite and I knew it was all wrong when my teeth were still in the actual macaron, and I had to clamp down. An utter travesty. Sure, I sound like a macaron snob, but I mean they're one of those things you just expect to be completely sublime.

So now I'm out $10 and I think I'm just going to stay home and have rice with spinach stew (which has some... herring? in it). I might go out late though.

On Monday, I went out after seeing a show. And by a show I mean Wozzeck at the Met. We started with some oysters, littlenecks, and cherrystones. I had a lobster roll, although I would have preferred a steak had it not been Lent. Afterwards, I had a cheesecake and some "coffee" (after all, it was St. Patrick's Day and no, oakvale, I did not wear orange). Excellent throughout, and not too badly priced. It also didn't hurt that our waitress was nice to look at. Not bad at all.

Wozzeck is excellent. Was it a good production/performance?

Well I felt it was a little overacted but otherwise excellent. The atonality wasn't as jarring as it was made out to be. However I absolutely loved the bass with the part of the doctor. I found it a bit darkly comic, in fact. At times not even darkly, with the doctor talking about piss and all. The end, though, could have been lifted from a modern horror film.

Thai again, although less authentically. I had a fried striped bass, which is apparently called "pla pad prik". Are you familiar with that, opeb-

Oh, wait.

It wasn't bad, although the base sauce wasn't entirely liked. I'll admit it was meant to approximate another fried fish dish at another restaurant. That I think is sea bass, and it's delicious, but the place is more expensive and nearly an hour away. So we wenr to a place in town. There's always something off about this place. Sometimes it's that the sauce is not my favourite, sometimes the dry noodles leave a lingering taste for days, sometimes the creme brulee is cold. Dessert this time however, was not a matter for complaint, a warm coconut sticky rice confection with mango. Quite like the coconut tapicoca pudding at my second-favorite Thai place in the city.
