This amendment provides us with a recognition of the social rights first expanded upon in FDR's Second Bill of Rights speech. I'm going to go ahead and offer an amendment here to make the whole thing a little bit more legible and work out some of the kinks :P

I do have a few comments on this. First of all, I believe you mean Article VI of the constitution (Article IV talks about our Regional Governments). In second place, I fundamentally view this as a very interesting piece of legislation, and I am specially supportive of the articles related to the environment and the marked opposition to discrimination on sexual grounds. That said, I had a lot of qualms about it back in the Senate race, and I stand by that now.

My main areas of concern are the life imprisionment abolishment, the right to vote for convicted felons, and some of the new articles (mainly 20 to 23, 25, 27, 31 and 36).

Going into detail:

-Life Imprisionment/Solitary Confinement: Believe by many to be some sort of "barbaric treatment", I have to say that I oppose this view. Not only it acts as a powerful deterrent (and in my opinion a much more effective one than the death penalty, which we don't have anyway), there are individuals that I believe are not suited to be released, regardless of the time or the amounts to therapy. I believe we shouldn't drop life imprisionment just for the sake of equality, and I also believe we should consider potential consequences of leaving the chance for the release of some criminals open.

-Right to Vote: All the other proposals in Section XIV are fine with me, but I am not very supportive of voting rights for convicted felons. I'm probably in the minority here, but I think some felons (unlike in January, I am not talking about all felons now) shouldn't be allowed to vote and be a candidate for public office.

-Articles 20-23: They look like good goals to me, but what worries me there are the consequences regarding unsolved issues like Health Care (which we are discussing right now) and Free Housing (which is not even discussed in the federal level, just in the South).

-Article 25: Would you mind explaining this one in further detail, TNF? I'm a little bit confused with the actual meaning of this one, specially "ownership".

-Article 27: This one seems to favor polygamy, so I am of course completely opposed to this one.

-Article 31: Just like 27, I am pro-life, so this one in nowhere near an acceptable compromise by any means.

-Article 36: Wasn't co-determination already rejected by the Senate shortly ago?

I may be forgetting a few details (and perhaps my criticism is wrong in more than a few days), but so far that is my take on this.

I support most of these ideas in principle (i.e. I think everyone has a right to an education) but I'm not sure I like the idea of tying them, especially as they're so open ended, into the constitution. I mean, what's a decent standard of living? Should everyone who wants to apply for a university course, or get a book, get it for free? Should I be able to claim a percentage of all the gold or silver or oil in the country?

In practice won't everything be decided by appointed, unelected judges who could use these amendments to do whatever they want?

I object.

I don't believe that a right to have an elective procedure free of charge should be in the constitution. If we did that for every medical procedure it would mean we'd have to spend more and raise more taxes and it would be impossible to reform health care spending.

I wanted to bring up the fact that we had left out something, but I'm not actually inclined to put forward an amendment to put it back in at least the same as it was. Based on what we've tried before, the ban on life sentences would make this amendment unlikely to pass, and the ban on solitary confinement should really have some defining parameters as to what qualifies.

So I'm sorta wondering what TNF or anyone else wants to do at this point.

Title: Re: SENATE BILL: Bill of Rights Amendment (Vote Halted)

Its a new vote as I don't think there are provisions to restart a stopped vote where it left off. That is because typiclaly the text needs to be changed and it wouldn't make sense to carry votes over from a vote on a text that no longer exists.

The military is charged with the use and possession of deadly force for the defense of the nation and its people. That force could be used against the people and discipline is thus essential and I worry that without capital punishment, it could be harder to maintain order, particularly in a war environment if such were to occur at some point.
