Title: How has your county voted in previous presidential elections?
Post by: ElectionsGuy on August 01, 2014, 08:49:16 PM
You can see county maps for virtually all presidential elections (even going back to 1820) on Wikipedia pages for each presidential election. I live in Waukesha County, WI. What's funny is it didn't even start becoming to the right of the state or the country until the 50's and 60's, and for a period of time before the 20th century, it was more democratic than the state. Washington and Ozaukee counties were actually the most democratic. Of course today these three counties make up the geographic core of republican support in Wisconsin. Its very interesting stuff when you look at counties from elections over 100 years ago, and you see, for example, that south central Kentucky and eastern Tennessee were republican bastions in the south and they still vote that way now. Anyway...

D from 1988-2012, R From 1972-1984, and went for the winner of the election every year from 1920-1968 with the exceptions of 68 and 48. Santa Clara County would've swung left IMO even without it's growing minority population due to the GOP's swing towards social conservatism. Heck, Carter's religous talk probably scared the county into voting for Ford in 76.

Um... almost every major city in the Midwest has had white flight at one point. By that logic, Oakland County, MI should be right wing, but its not.

Nassau County, NY....progressed with the rest of the GOP.  It voted GOP every election (outside of the '64 landslide) with the GOP candidate, until '92. Since then, completely Democratic, although the '04, '08, and '12 cycles, were 53-46% for the Democratic candidate.

Yeah, there's something special about the WOW counties that other Northern-Midwestern suburbs just don't have(well, I guess Indy/Cincinatti/Columbus, but they're all further south).

Similarly, Lake County IL was once a Republican stronghold, although never as much as its neighbor McHenry. It did go very narrowly for Bush twice (would have gone Gore in '00 without Nader), but has gone comfortably for Obama twice and, like the New York suburbs, isn't expected to turn back in the foreseeable future.

Nassau County, NY....progressed with the rest of the GOP.  It voted GOP every election (outside of the '64 landslide) with the GOP candidate, until '92. Since then, completely Democratic, although the '04, '08, and '12 cycles, were 53-46% for the Democratic candidate.

I'm in Nassau as well.  It swung HEAVILY Democratic during the 90's.  Went from 7 points more Republican than the nation in 1988 to 19 points more Democratic in 2000.  Pulled back quite a bit after that, but has remained a bit more Democratic than the nation.

2012: Mitt wins 59%-38%
2008: McCain wins 52%-45%
2004: Bush wins 56%-43%
2000: Bush wins 56%-41%
1996: Clinton wins
1992: Clinton wins
1988: Bush wins
1984: Reagan wins
1980: Reagan wins
1976: Carter wins
1972: Nixon wins
1968: Nixon wins
1964: Johnson wins
1960: Nixon wins

Really, the only surprising result for me on here is 1960. For years, I have heard stories in my town of how "Jack Kennedy came to town and I shook his hand outside Murphy's Department store!" and he spoke on the courthouse steps. I have heard those stories for years, but Nixon carried Roane County.

We followed the South. Al Gore destroyed the national Democratic Party in West Virginia. They'll never win it again.

Riley, was it environmentalism that killed it?  Or did other cultural issues come into play?

Oktibbeha County, Mississippi

1960:  Unpledged Electors >40%
1964:  Goldwater >70%
1968:  Wallace >40
1972:  Nixon >60%
1976:  Ford >50%
1980:  Reagan >40% [1]
1984:  Reagan >50%
1988:  Bush >50%
1992:  Bush >40%
1996:  Dole >40%
2000:  Bush (53.8%)
2004:  Bush (55.7%)
2008:  Obama (49.6%) [1]
2012:  Obama (50.2%)

[1] - Never realized this until now, but it appears that Gerald Ford performed better in Oktibbeha County in 1976 than Reagan did in 1980.  Very few counties in the South seem to have behaved similarly.

[2] - In 2008, Oktibbeha County represented Obama's smallest margin of victory by actual number of votes over John McCain in any county in the United States.  Obama won by 6 votes.

Not before doing this exercise did I realize that Obama's victory in 2008 was the first time a Democrat had carried Oktibbeha County since 1956.  Also, it appears that Oktibbeha County is full of reluctant Republicans - despite always siding with the GOP until 2008, it failed to give Reagan or Bush more than 60% in the landslide years of 1984 or 1988.

Republicans have performed better in Oktibbeha County than they have statewide in Mississippi only once - and that was for Gerald Ford in 1976.

Oktibbeha's "flip" to the Democrats in 2008 is somewhat interesting.  While African-American turnout definitely played a role in this (the county is almost 1/3 Black) I suspect that it had even more to do with well-educated university employees and out-of-state transplants tipping the balance against the GOP.  Thus, I identify Oktibbeha County as an almost textbook example of the Republicans' problems competing against the Obama Coalition - if Republicans can't win some of the most well-educated, cosmopolitan voters in Mississippi then where can they?   2016 will be interesting in Oktibbeha County, but I expect it to be staying Democratic even without Obama on the ticket.

Like a lot of Maine, Androscoggin County started off very Republican and Protestant.  However, as the city of Lewiston (largest city in the county) started to receive, first Irish-Catholic and then Franco-American Catholic Immigrants, the small town turned into a much larger one and became a bastion of labor in the state of Maine (textile mills).  That is why it voted a lot more Democratic than Maine from 1912 to 2000.  With Lewiston, voting less Democratic than it used too (mostly because of the mill closings, however, it still has a significant Democratic lean, Obama got 60%, second strongest percentage in the county) and the rural areas around it voting more Democratic than they used too (mostly because of the Republican party becoming much more Conservative, similar to a lot of New England), the county still goes Democratic but by smaller margins than Maine.

My current county (Alameda) from 1892-1932 voted entirely against the Democrats [even in 1912 they voted for Teddy Roosevelt again rather than Wilson or Taft, the latter wasn't even on the state ballot],then never voted for Republicans ever again [except for 1952 and 1956].

Most interesting is that Humphrey won the county by roughly 53%,but Mc Govern won it by 55%. Basically when the rest of the nation drank the Nixon-ade, my county wisely knew he was a crook.

The same effect happened with Reagan as well. Carter was only voted for re-election by 48.3% (1 of exactly 3 counties in the whole state NOT to vote for Reagan), but Mondale won it by 58%.

Also the county voted the strongest for Carter in 1976 at 57.7%

Last two elections Obama won by 78.7% against Mc Cain and Romney.

Baltimore County
2012: Barack Obama (57%)
2008: Barack Obama (56%)
2004: John Kerry (52%)
2000: Al Gore (53%)
1996: Bill Clinton (46%)
1992: Bill Clinton (44%)
1988: George Bush (57%)
1984: Reagan (61%)
1980: Reagan (47%)
1976: Ford (55%)
1972: Nixon (70%)
1968: Nixon (50%)
1964: Johnson (60%)
1960: Nixon (50%)

Explanation: Today, Baltimore County is a diverse county with a number of different, and fairly distinct, regions. It surrounds Baltimore City and its politics have often reflected changes in the city's demographics and population. Prior the 1950s, the County was very much a rural constituency, with the exception of the Bethlehem Steel factory in Sparrow's Point (just southeast of the city). This changed rapidly after World War Two with the rise of sub-urbanization. Many former city-dwellers (like my grandfather) moved into stand-alone homes in the county, and began to change its politics.

The county is something of  microcosm for America as a whole. White working class towns in the Southeast (Dundalk, Essex, Middle River) and the Southwest (Arbutus, Baltimore Highlands) used to provide the backbone of the Democratic coalition, but have trended sharply Republican in recent years (minus Romney in 2012, who performed very poorly in many of these communities). As an example, Southeast Baltimore County was represented by a Democratic State Senator, three Democratic delegates, and a Democratic County Councilman heading into the 2014 elections. Now every one of those seats is held by a conservative Republican. Meanwhile, Western Baltimore County is the Democratic base in the county. It is a combination of African-American families who have moved out of the city along Reisterstown Road, and largely Jewish communities in the Pikesville area who have always been traditionally Democratic. Northern Baltimore county is still largely rural and conservative, and votes Republican by wide margins. The key swing area, which has shifted from being traditionally Republican to leaning Democrat, are the suburbs just north and north-east of the city: Towson, Parkville, Overlea. These areas determine who wins the county, and are indicative of who wins the state (i.e. if a Democrat can't carry Towson, he/she is struggling to win over moderate suburbanites and is probably going to lose the election). Gov. Hogan swept them in 2014, while O'Malley won them in 2010. They voted heavily for Bush (1988), but began to swing Dem in the 1990s and haven't looked back in national elections.

As for 2016: I imagine Clinton will win Baltimore County by a similar margin as Obama.

One of the most reliable Republican counties in Southern California. Even in the Democratic victories of 1936/1992/2008/2012, those were decided by <2.5%.

However, much like the rest of the region, the last 10-15 years haven't been kind to the Republican Party. Younger & more diverse voters have replaced the aging Reagan Republicans of the 1980's, while the western part of the county is rapidly growing and turning more urban.

Macomb votes with the national presidential popular vote average it looks like. I'm sure Bush W. didn't Oakland County in 2004 but he won Macomb. Does Bush W win in Macomb in 2004 have anything to with Oakland being more socially moderate than Macomb?

One thing I noticed when doing this is that urban and suburban counties in Louisiana swung to the GOP before the rural ones did. Lafayette, an almost entirely urban/suburban county went GOP long before most of its neighboring rural parishes.

Norfolk County, Massachusetts:

1976: Jimmy Carter
1980: Ronald Reagan
1984: Ronald Reagan
1988: Michael Dukakis
1992: Bill Clinton
1996: Bill Clinton
2000: Al Gore 59%-34%
2004: John Kerry 60%-39%
2008: Barack Obama 58%-40%
2012: Barack Obama 57%-42%
2016: Hillary Clinton 60%-33%

(I'm not a member, so I can't get county data before 2000)

Brief explanation: Despite bordering Boston, Norfolk County isn't nearly as "we're-right-next-to-Boston" (except for Brookline) as eastern Middlesex and Essex Counties are, largely because Norfolk isn't adjacent to downtown Boston. It's primarily a rich, white county (not lily white, it hovers around 80%) in most towns and cities except for Braintree, Quincy, and Randolph- the former two are "big cities" and Randolph is a majority-minority city of around 30,000 people. It's also a core part of the Irish Riviera, as more than 30% of the overall population is of Irish extraction. That latter part can explain why the already Democratic stronghold county swung for Hillary this year, as Irish people love the Clintons because Bill was president when the Good Friday Agreement was brokered (however, the younger generation cannot connect with this because Generation Z was barely around in 1998). Although it primarily votes Democratic, it's not ultra-liberal outside of Brookline and Trump could easily win many towns in the county (although winning it as a whole is virtually impossible outside of an earthslide) if he does good in 2020.

Yeah, formatting this was a nightmare. But yeah, my place was quite the GOP paradise until The New Deal...and even then, much of the rest of the state was more Democratic.

Then it became a leaning Democratic area until Reaganomics happened.

And here's Part II:

I can only look at swings, and relatives where there is data besides "> X%", so the 1892 Election is the beginning of that, and I have to skip over 1900 for the same reason.

1908: Taft 64.2%                      + 6.12 D                        + 8.74 R                   + 12. 6 R

1896: McKinley 60.43%               + 12.87 R                    + 11.27 R              + 9.43 R
1892: B. Harrison 47.6%            + 2.4 - 12.4 R              + 4.18 R               + 4.6 R
1888: B. Harrison > 50%
1884: Blaine > 60%
1880: Garfield > 50%
1876: Hayes > 40%
1872: Grant > 50%
1868: Grant  > 50%
1864: Lincoln > 60%
1860: Lincoln > 40%

1856: Buchanan < 50%

Didn't exist as a county in 1852, and before that California wasn't even a state.

2004: Kerry +7.4
2008: Obama +21.2
2012: Obama +20.3

2016: Clinton +35.8

Italics = voted same as the state
Bold = voted for the EC winner

GOP margins started deteriorating from 1980 onward leading to 2012, and then in 2016, the county swung massively towards Clinton, as she won the county by the largest margin for any candidate since at least 1924 (VA Department of Elections database only goes back that far).

Pretty interesting that the county was a Whig bastion while the state was a Democratic stronghold prior to the Civil War.

Not sure what surprises me more, the fact that you two and TJ in Oregon are all from Washington County or that you're all (relatively) pro-life.
