Title: Re: Armenia and Azerbaijan clash in Nagorno-Karabakh Post by: MaxQue on August 08, 2014, 03:49:19 PM Well, Nagorno-Karabakh is pretty much in war or something similar, but more tamed since the mid-90's.
So, there is nothing new, nor any religious war or rebellion or anything. It's just two countries fighting over land. Another terrible leftover of USSR boundary drawing. Armenian internet nationalists rival the Balkan nationalists (esp. Serbs, Albanians, and Greeks) in their devotion. Seeing the background was the Armenian Genocide reducing the Armenians to their territories in USSR, and the Azeri starting massacre on Armenians as USSR began to collapse, I can see where they come from, of course it doesn't excuse the hundred of thousand (800-900K) of Azeris who was ethnic cleansed from the area around Nagorno-Karabakh (which the Armenians occupied) and from Armenia itself, of course the people mentioning this tend to not mention the Armenian refugees from Azerbaijan, who while a smaller group also counted in hundred of thousands (around 350K). Russia wants both countries in its sphere (though has historically been much closer to Armenia) and will in this conflict try to be a mediator for its own self-interest. That would be a disaster, because the natural ally for USA in this would be Azerbaijan (thanks to their close relationship with Turkey, while Armenia have a close relationship with Russia and Iran). So American support will likely help in a new Armenian Genocide (or at least massive ethnic cleansing). A hundred years ago, we forsook Wilsonian Armenia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilsonian_Armenia). Time to make up for it with McCainian Armenia.
