Title: How Common Is Your Last Name?
Post by: 12th Doctor on April 06, 2005, 12:35:28 AM
Well...

http://www.gens-us.net/

This is mine

()

I would have to say that that looks quite correct.  I went through the last names of all the people I knew that I could think of.  Suprisingly, this friend of mines name was the least common I could find...

And this map is out of date. It should have 4 listed for Florida. And all those people on the map are related to me by blood or marriage.

My family's been living in SC since 1998 (six people), so the map is a little inaccurate.  But it's a pretty rare name nonetheless. :)

Interesting. Dukakis and Mondale are super rare names, especially Dukakis. I wonder if that hurt them.

Some of the names are really spread out like Kennedy has 100-4999 people in every state except ND, where it has 50-99.

Other's are very non-spread out like Kerry, which has over 100 in 2 states, 50-99 in 12 states, and 0 in 7 states.

Two of the oldest streets in Erie are Clinton and Gore St.  Not only to they intersect, but my one professor, who is a ardent Republican, has lived at the exact intersection since 1990.

Acctually, according to what he told me, all of the four corner houses were sporting Bush/Quayle sings in '92.  However, on of his neighbors broke ranks and went with Clinton/Gore in '96.

Mine is pretty well spread:

()

My grandma was the last Freame in Australia, but there is at least one left in the US:

()

Without the second 'e' there are a few more:

()

and my mother's maiden name...

()

and her mother's maiden name..

()

and the family middle name on my mum's side...

()

So Bartlett and especially Lee are reasonably common, but the rest are practically non-existant, especially Freame. And I really like Freame too :(

And just for fun, my...interest's surname:

I won't post the map however, the states over 1,000 are CA, NY, TX, FL, IL and NJ. And the states between 100-1000 are AZ, NM, PA, CT and MA.  Since my surname is both common in Mexico and Canada (Quebec), the results are not that shocking.

It's one letter off from a very popular name and brand, but as far as the name itself, it isn't that uncommon.  FL, NY, PA, MI, WI, and CA have over 1,000.  There is a town with the same name too in the Midwest.

Here is a trivia question. Out of the 1,000 most common surnames used in the United States, what surname in the United States has the highest percentage of blacks of the total for that surname using it? What surname is second? What surname has the highest absolute number of blacks in the US using it?

My surname is rather evenly dispersed so it is pretty boring. I was told at one time that the highest incidence was in North Carolina, but that may just be idle chat.

I'm not going to post my actual last name here, but suffice to say it is an unusual spelling of a reasonably uncommon Russian Jewish last name. Most people with this name in the U.S. are relatives. New Jersey is first, followed by New York. The weirdness is that it only appears in six states, and the other four are Florida, Oregon, Iowa, and Utah.

Iowa? Utah? It's not unthinkable for Russian Jewish immigrants to land in those states, but not to the exclusion of so many others.

I think revealing your mother's maiden name is dangerous - people can apply for credit cards etc.

I found it; you need to enter the name without spaces. I'm not going to put it in, though; the only result was <5 in NJ, so it must be only her sister (and her if the data was collected before 2008, which it must have been). Not really surprising, although the constituent parts of the name were both pretty common.

My two family names. Yes, I have names of each of my parents. That is annoying to write since that is long. That was common in Quebec since the wife don't take the name of his husband. So maiden name doesn't exist.

This feature has provided me with many hours of entertainment! :)

One of its best features is that it gives us a reasonably good idea of the distribution of various ethnicities. For example, here's where the Koreans are:

and the Jews:

()

and the Hungarians:

()
(interesting how closely those two correlate)

and the Hmong:

()

and last but not least, the Cantonese:

Generally, I've found that Mandarins are better-off than Cantonese.

Doesn't surprise me. During the Song dynasty, government officials & their families were called Mandarins (I think; haven't studied it in a long time).

Actually, "Moderate" gives surname not found.

Ah ha! As I always suspected!

I have to wonder how many of these (as well as how many of the Communists and Liberals) changed their names to match their political beliefs.
