Interesting. Dukakis and Mondale are super rare names, especially Dukakis. I wonder if that hurt them.

Some of the names are really spread out like Kennedy has 100-4999 people in every state except ND, where it has 50-99.

Other's are very non-spread out like Kerry, which has over 100 in 2 states, 50-99 in 12 states, and 0 in 7 states.

Very uncommon.........and since it was spelled incorrectly by the immigration folks it's not even the same name as it is where my grandparents came from.

It's one letter off from a very popular name and brand, but as far as the name itself, it isn't that uncommon.  FL, NY, PA, MI, WI, and CA have over 1,000.  There is a town with the same name too in the Midwest.

Pretty rare, but not extremely so.

THis says little about my ancestry as my mother was adopted.  It is decidedly less British/Irish and more Norwegian/Swedish than it appears.

Out of the 1,000 most common surnames used in the United States, what surname in the United States has the highest percentage of blacks of the total for that surname using it? What surname is second? What surname has the highest absolute number of blacks in the US using it?

My surname is rather evenly dispersed so it is pretty boring. I was told at one time that the highest incidence was in North Carolina, but that may just be idle chat.

I'm pretty sure that the most common black surname was actually "White". Don't quote me on that.

White was the 14th most common black name in the United States in absolute numbers.   In percentage terms, the surname with the highest percentage of blacks using that name had a percentage of 89.87% of the total using that surname.

I'm not going to post my actual last name here, but suffice to say it is an unusual spelling of a reasonably uncommon Russian Jewish last name. Most people with this name in the U.S. are relatives. New Jersey is first, followed by New York. The weirdness is that it only appears in six states, and the other four are Florida, Oregon, Iowa, and Utah.

Iowa? Utah? It's not unthinkable for Russian Jewish immigrants to land in those states, but not to the exclusion of so many others.

I did an excel sort, and did a multiplication function, to get the data to pose my questions.

I think revealing your mother's maiden name is dangerous - people can apply for credit cards etc.

All my real names are very common - in fact in the bangkok airport recently I was paged and met a strange man looking for another one with my name.
