The end of an era in Massachusetts for sure.

Can't say I ever agreed with the man on everything, but nevertheless he served Boston well. Godspeed, sir.

I'll never forget him, especially for mispronouncing various Boston sports players' names :(

I suppose he was quite liked as a mayor, or, at the very least, had a big impact on his city, since I saw his name everywhere in Boston when I visited this summer.

Apparently the city is struggling to figure out what to do about that. Even mundane things like trash cans would say "City of Boston Public Works, Mayor Tom Menino" or something so they have to decide whether to replace his name with the current mayor or just have a moratorium on putting mayors' names on things.

I prefer the Gary Johnson Method of not putting the mayor/governor/executive's name on anything. That way signage only has to be replaced when it wears out, not every 4-8 years.

Like him or not, he was a giant. 71 is up there in years, but far too young for death. Quite a shame.

That's an insanely long time to be mayor of such a large city.

RIP.

RIP

I have a question regarding his 1997 re-election.  Wiki says he was unopposed, but only won 71% of the vote.  There didn't appear to be a 'None of the Above' or write-in option on the ballot in any of his other elections, so what happened that year?

You think that's insane, try the mayor of Charleston, SC, Joseph P. Riley, Jr. who has been in office since 1975 making him the longest serving big city mayor.

Apparently the Mayor of Charleston is paid $162,815 a year, too. Which is even more insane.
