I know this is your thread Kalwejt but I didn't want to create a new thread just for this and its somewhat related to the maps you post. Counties where Trump is under 30% (excluding Minnesota, Kansas, and Alaska). Most counties in Kansas and Minnesota are going to be under 30% Trump counties.

I was wondering if anyone was making Congressional District maps as opposed to county maps...

It wouldn't be very useful in, say, Alaska or Wyoming, but it would remove the clutter of things like Virginia's city-counties.

Your 1996-2000 switch is off in Missouri. Yours shows all counties in Missouri except for Gore 2000 to switch to Bush 2000 from Clinton 1996, but Clinton '96 didn't win all those counties.

Great maps! But Hinds County, MS is solidly Dem, definitely didn't vote for McCain.

Why do you have Al Gore flipping Louisville and Columbus?  Clinton won them both in 1996.

Obama was not on the ballot in Michigan and I don't have county-wide results for caucuses in Kansas and North Dakota (both Obama's wins).

 - In Michigan 2008, uncommitted is treated as the Obama vote
 - In Alaska and Hawaii, all areas were Obama/Sanders
 - In white counties in finished states, that means there was either a tie, there was no vote, or uncommitted won in either 2008, 2016, or both.

Were there any counties shifting from Dewey to Stevenson in 1948-1952?

Pitkin, CO seems to be the only McGovern-Ford county outside of their home states of SD and MI. Were there any explanations for Pitkin? It appeared to have a strong Dem swing from 1968-1972.

There was one: Dawson County in North Georgia. It’s notable that Thurmond received only 2.82 percent of the vote there in 1948, and Dewey did get over 52 percent, making it his third-best Georgia county behind Unionist Fannin and Pickens.
Pitkin is of course a wealthy “latte liberal” county of the type today’s Democrats appeal to. McGovern could appeal to its populace as he was rejected by all by 4 percent of the nation’s counties for much the same region rural counties today are overwhelmingly rejecting Hilary.

I don't think I ever realized Andrews won Prince Edward Co, Va. in '56. 
The Brown decision must have been particularly relevant here, given Davis v. County School Board of Prince Edward County was one the cases leading up to it.
