Title: Opening Round of the Presidential Forever Championships (Take II)
Post by: Erc on June 19, 2005, 01:45:48 AM
Since there may be some differences between what I've done and what Jake did, I'm starting the initial seeding round again.

Each candidate will play Punching Bag of the other party, and a Libertarian Punching Bag (played by myself, who will press spacebar throughout the entire game).

Regionalism and Dynamism are on.

Seeding will be conducted first on basis of electoral vote...in the event of a tie, this will be broken by popular vote percentage.

May the best man win.

Seeding So Far:

Republicans:
1) PBrunsel
2) Ernest
3) Jake

Democrats:
1) Alcon
2) Ebowed

Game 1:

Jake Nichols / George Patton (R) [Jake]:  71%, 532 EV
Punching Bag / Punchette Bag (D): 27%, 6 EV

(Punching Bag wins Delaware by the slimmest of margins)

Game 2:
Paul Brunsel / George Allen (R) [PBrunsel]: 76%, 535 EV
Punching Bag / Punchette Bag  (D): 22%, 3 EV

Game 3:

Ernest Bunbury / Sam Houston (R) [Ernest]: 73%, 535 EV
Punching Bag / Punchette Bag (D): 25%, 3 EV

(Bag put up a resilient effort in this game, coming rather close to winning Virginia).

Game 4:

Alcon San Croix / Wesley Clark (D) [Alcon]: 69%, 529 EV
Punching Bag / Punchette Bag (R): 29%, 9 EV

[Idaho and Utah for Bag]

Game 5:

Dan Porceddu / Bob Bobson (D) [Ebowed/Bob]: 60%, 412 EV
Punching Bag / Punchette Bag (R): 38%, 126 EV

Now, this deserves a map.

()

My condolences to Ebowed on losing California to Punching Bag.

More results tomorrow.

If this is any indication of future performance, the Democrats will need a boost.  I'm open to any suggestions.

This game has always seemed to be slightly biased towards Republicans.  Jake's solution was to give the Republicans a party establishment of 4 instead of 5.

Already deprived the Republicans of their incumbency, but once the seeding rounds are done I'll run a few trial matches with that and see how it goes.

Next group of 5...

Game 6:

Keystone Phil / Jim Talent (R) [Keystone Phil]: 72%, 535 EV
Punching Bag / Punchette Bag (D): 26%, 3 EV

Game 7:

Hugh Bartlett / Jack Regester (D) [hughento]: 73%, 534 EV
Punching Bag / Punchette Bag (R): 24%, 4 EV

Very nice performance by Hugh Bartlett here, well on his way to another good run.  After a surprise win in the state of Alabama over Bag, he only lost the state of Idaho by a slim margin.  Bartlett even broke 60% in Utah.

Game 8:

Alex Knobel / Al Franken (D) [Akno21]: 69%, 521 EV
Punching Bag / Punchette Bag (R): 29%, 17 EV

Bag wins Idaho, Utah, Alaska, and, in the surprise of the night, West Virginia.

/me sticks tongue out at Al

Game 9:

Scott Pettit / John Warner (R) [MHS2002]: 70%, 535 EV
Punching Bag / Punchette Bag (D): 27%, 3 EV

Game 10:

Michael R. Lane / Tom Ridge (R) [Wildcard]: 80%, 535 EV
Punching Bag / Punchette Bag (D): 18%, 3 EV

Congrats to Wildcard here on an amazing performance...Bag did worse than Perot in terms of the popular vote, and Wildcard cracked 30% in DC...

Third Group of Games

Game 11:

Michael Holler / Bill Clinton (D) [nini2287]: 68%, 526 EV
Bag/Bag (R): 30%, 12 EV

Bag wins Utah, Idaho, and Alaska

Game 12:

Daniel Smith / Donald Rumsfeld (R) [DanielX]: 70%, 535 EV
Bag/Bag (D): 28%, 3 EV

Game 13:

Chris Soult / Jennifer Pettersen (R) [supersoulty]: 75%, 535 EV
Bag/Bag (D): 23%, 3 EV

Game 14:

John Anderson / Phil Bredesen (D) [Sam Spade]: 68%, 530 EV
Bag/Bag: 30%, 8 EV

Ekeing out narrow victories in Idaho and Utah, John Anderson falls short of unanimity due to Bag's surprising victory in South Carolina.

Game 15:

Lucas Longley / Mark Warner (D) [Gabu]: 71%, 534 EV
Bag/Bag (R): 28%, 4 EV

Bag wins Idaho.

Ok, post (or PM) the form that was originally posted by Jake  here (https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=19413.0) (second post).

If at all possible, please state whether the stance you are taking on each issue is left/center-left/center/center-right/right in addition (or instead of) the actual stance--makes things much easier when creating the characters.

Bag/Bag: 32%, 20 EV

Bag wins Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Kentucky, and comes very close to winning Nevada.

Game 18:

Chris Ilikeverin / Wesley Clark (D) [Ilikeverin]: 68%, 526 EV
Bag/Bag: 30%, 12 EV

Bag wins Utah, Idaho, and South Dakota.

Game 19:

Andrew Berger / Gary Johnson (R) [AndrewBerger]: 67%, 535 EV
Bag/Bag: 31%, 3 EV

Game 20:

Colin Wixted / Bob Ehrlich (R) [Colin Wixted]: 72%, 535 EV

We still have room for one more Democrat!  Apply Now!

Sorry about that...

But it is takeable.  Sam Spade did it (although at the expense of South Carolina), and as you'll see, Immy will do it in an upcoming game (of course, he does have the homestate advantage).

Title: Re: Opening Round of the Presidential Forever Championships (Take II)

Part V:

Game 21:

Gustaf Lundgren / Hillary Clinton (D) [Gustaf]: 71%, 526 EV
Bag/Bag: 27%, 12 EV

(Bag wins Utah, Idaho, and Nebraska)

Game 22:

True Democrat / Jean Shaheen (D) [True Democrat]: 68%, 529 EV
Bag/Bag: 29%, 9 EV

(Bag wins Idaho, Utah)

Game 23:

P.G. Talbott / Mark Sanford (R) [Erc / The John Birch Commie]: 73%, 535 EV
Bag/Bag: 25%, 3 EV

Game 24:

Josh Craddock / John McCain (R) [josh22]: 71%, 535 EV
Bag/Bag: 27%, 3 EV

Game 25:

Mark Ard / John Dibble (R) [Cheesewhiz/John Dibble]: 66%, 535 EV
Bag/Bag: 32%, 3 EV

Title: Re: Opening Round of the Presidential Forever Championships (Take II)
Post by: Erc on June 19, 2005, 05:51:50 PM
Part VI:

Game 26:

Eric Everett / Evan Bayh (D) [Immy]: 66%, 496 EV
Bag/Bag (R):  32%

Well, the Democrats finally won Idaho, as promised...but it came at a cost.  Immy lost  Utah (of course), Alaska, and...Texas.  Immy barely squeaked by in Kentucky, winning by 66 votes.

Game 27:

William Goldwater / John Cornyn [Dubya]: 68%, 531 EV
Bag/Bag: 30%, 7 EV.

Although it was refreshing to see the phrase "This is Goldwater Country" emblazoned across the top of the screen, it is sort of fitting that a candidate named Goldwater ended up performing the worst of all the Republican candidates electorally, losing Maine by 1.5% in the final week.

Game 28:

Max Power / Ronald McDonald (D) [Max Power]:  64%, 484 EV
Bag/Bag (R): 34%, 54 EV

No, not even the voters of President Forever will vote that overwhelmingly for a near-centenarian and the Leadership of Ronald McDonald.  Bag won Florida, Louisiana, Alaska, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, and Utah--but lost Wyoming.
Reese can take some comfort in the fact that he still somehow managed to do better than Dan Ebowedddu.

Game 29:

Cosmo Kramer / The Charismatic Evan Bayh (D) [Cosmo Kramer]: 65%, 521 EV
Bag/Bag: 33%, 17 EV

Not surprisingly, Kramer lost Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming.  Similarly unsurprisingly, he lost Nevada.  Populism just doesn't sell well in Sin City.  Also came within four points of losing his home state...

These will be conducted under the new rules (Republican how established = 4).

Erc, if you are still one Democrat short you can remove me from the competition, since I orchestrated (and won) the first PF Championship.

For the 4th Republican Seed:

Ernest: 77%, 535 EV

Erc: 75%, 535 EV

Ernest wins the seed.

Republican 6th Seed:

Keystone Phil: 81%, 535 EV (!)
Bono: 79%, 535 EV
Colin Wixted: 72%, 535 EV

Keystone Phil wins the 6th Seed, Bono the 7th.

The fact that all the Republicans did at least as well as they did under the old system is worrying.

Democratic 7th Seed:

nini2287: 68%, 524 EV (loses NE, UT, ID)
Ilikeverin: 67%, 492 EV (loses ID, UT, ND, and TX [by 50k votes]).

nini2287 wins the 7th seed.

No, no...I'm pretty sure we can run with a mismatch.  It would be better if we had 15-on-15, but I'm not going to kick anybody out.

Final Seedings (awaiting, of course, a 15th Democrat):

Republicans:

1) Gov. Michael R. Lane (R-CA) [Wildcard]
2) President Paul Brunsel (R-IA) [PBrunsel]
3) Sen. Chris Soult (R-PA) [supersoulty]
4) Mr. Ernest Bunbury (R-SC) [Ernest]
5) Rep. P.G. Talbott (R-NY) [Erc]
6) Mr. Keystone Phil (R-PA) [Keystone Phil]
7) Mr. Bono Vox (R-NH) [Bono]
8) Sen. Colin Wixted (R-AK) [Colin Wixted]
9) Mr. Josh Craddock (R-NC) [josh22]
10) Sen. Scott Pettit (R-DC) [MHS2002]
11) Mayor Daniel Smith (R-WY) [DanielX]
12) Gov. Andrew Berger (R-NY) [AndrewBerger]
13) Gov. Mark Ard (R-WI) [Cheesewhiz]
14) Mr. Jake Nichols (R-PA) [Jake]
15) Sen. William Goldwater (R-FL) [Dubya]

Democrats:

1) Gov. Hugh Bartlett (D-OR) [hughento]
2) Sen. Lucas Longley (D-WA) [Gabu]
3) Sen. John Anderson (D-LA) [Sam Spade]
4) Mr. Alcon San Croix (D-WA) [Alcon]
5) Mr. True Democrat (D-PA) [True Democrat]
6) Gov. Gustaf Lundgren (D-MN) [Gustaf]
7) Nicholas Holler (D-PA) [nini2287]
8) Gov. Chris Ilikeverin (D-IN) [Ilikeverin]
9) Sen. Alex Knobel (D-MD) [Akno21]
10) Gov. Cosmo Kramer (D-AR) [Cosmo Kramer]
11) Sen. Peter Blerpiez (D-MA) [Blerpiez]
12) Gov. Eric Everett (D-ID) [Immy]
13) Seņor Max Power (D-PA) [Max Power]
14) Mr. Dan Porceddu (D-SC) [Ebowed]

As the tiebreakers show, the new system isn't exactly working, either.  I'm going to try experimenting around (notching it down to 3, depriving the Republicans of cash, etc.) and seeing how that works.

Title: Re: Opening Round of the Presidential Forever Championships (Take II)

General Format of the Second Round:

(Note that this will not start for a couple days, while I work out the kinks in the system and we wait to see if a 15th Democrat comes along--if not, I'll just make up a decidedly mediocre Democrat to fill the spot [or just use Punching Bag again]).

The 30 players will be split into 5 groups with 6 players each, 3 Democrats and 3 Republicans.

Group 1:
Wildcard (R)
Dubya (R)
Keystone Phil (R)
hughento (D)
(Bag) (D)
Cosmo Kramer (D)

Group 2:
PBrunsel (R)
Jake (R)
Bono (R)
Gabu (D)
Ebowed (D)
Akno21 (D)

Group 3:
supersoulty (R)
Cheesewhiz (R)
Colin Wixted (R)
Sam Spade (D)
Max Power (D)
Ilikeverin (D)

Group 4:
Ernest (R)
AndrewBerger (R)
josh22 (R)
Alcon (D)
Immy (D)
nini2287 (D)

Group 5:
Erc (R)
DanielX (R)
MHS2002 (R)
True Democrat (D)
Blerpiez (D)
Gustaf (D)

Each Republican will play each Democrat twice, and the top two of each party will advance to the next round.

Yeah...the Democrats really need some help.  I've been running some test matches between the candidates out there, and most races just turn into '88, '80, or '84-style blowouts.

Wow...I lowered the Republican "how established" to 1, and they're still winning.

I just replayed Bartlett v. Punching Bag, and Bartlett only won by 7.

For some odd reason, Punching Bag does better when his party is less established.  Will have to check this with real candidates....

Update:  Paradoxically, having Republicans at 5 and Democrats at 4 is seeming to be a good option...
