Title: Will there be another GOP Governor in New York State?
Post by: JasonDebenah89 on December 29, 2016, 09:37:41 PM
Last GOP governor was George Pataki who left in 2007 and it has been Democrat winning with relatively large margins (55%-close to 70% of the vote).

Do you think there will be another Republican governor in New York? Can it be done?

Again, if "ever" is involved (assuming we keep the same two parties we've had since the 1850s), the answer is clearly yes.

If a Republican governor can win over 70% in MA, as William Weld did in 1994, the NY can have a GOP governor in the foreseeable future.

Yes, but likely not in 2018. Sometime in the 2020s it could very well happen with a Charlie Baker/Larry Hogan/John Kasich type of GOPer.

Yes. Rob Astorino, Carl Paladino, Craig Caruana, or Marcus Molinaro. Chris Collins could win statewide as well.

Paladino? After his last scandal he will not be elected a dogcatcher statewide...

Craig Caruana would be good. He's a rising star. He should probably run for NYC mayor in 2017 or 2021 before going statewide in the 2020s.

Well, 40% in race for city council seat is not enough to win a mayorality or governorship. IMHO - only Bloomberg-type person (with very big money and strongly socially liberal) would have any chances. But i don't see scond Bloomberg in Republican party now..

I think he could beat Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley for good this time in 2017...she's tainted with the homeless shelter issue in that part of the city and state. It already defeated Assemblywoman Margaret Markey.

Hanna or Gibson could make it competitive, and if the Democrat primary field is literally only De Blasio and Cuomo and it gets really really ugly really quickly.

Hanna could run as late as 2026, when he will be 75*. He could beat Teachout, or potentially De Blasio.

*(For reference, the same age Sanders turned this year and the same age Biden will turn in 2017. Elizabeth Warren will turn 75 in 2024.)

Rep. RIchard Hannah just retired from the House. He's probably the most liberal NY Republican. He could probably win NY

If he will be able to win primary. You must be rather liberal Republican to have chances in general election, but rather conservative one to win primary. Hanna, for example, was routinely attacked from the right as a congressman in primary.

Is she currently holding that position?  Haven't been keeping up.

Rob Astorino, Carl Paladino, Ron Castorina, Assemblyman (R-Staten Island), John Quaglione (R-Bay Ridge), Chris Gibson, Craig Caruana, etc. could be a potential governor in the future.

At some point, sure. It helps that Governorships tend to be less partisan than federal offices, so you can have some unorthodox outcomes. Vermont just elected a Republican Governor, but they aren't going to send one to the Senate anytime soon.

Yeah, I'm sure Paladino's overt racism that was so bad even Trump had to issue a statement condemning him has made him a prime choice for statewide elections in New York...

Anyway, someday, surely. Probably not in the next 20 years or so, but you never know.

Someday yes, assuming now third party replaces the GOP in New York. 2018 could be a possibility because of a potential messy primary challenge on the Dem side, probably unlikely though. I would guess by 2030, New York would have elected a GOP Governor.

Yes, but it has much more to do with what the Democrats do than what the Republicans do.

If Zephyr Teachout had more money and more time to build her machine, we might be looking at Governor Astorino right now.

Gubernatorial elections seem to be the least partisan, so this isn't that unlikely.

And, Wyoming will have another Democratic Governor. Eventually.

Florida hasn't had a Democratic governor in almost twenty years, I guess that means the Dems are done down there ::)

Maybe John Flanagan in 2018....however beating Cuomo in Trump's first midterm in 2018 may be tough...2022 or 2026 maybe.

Not 2018. 2022 - possible, but depends on too many factors, which can't be predicted now. 2026? I don't predict so far into future.

One of the problems with running as a NY Republican is that the NY media is dominated by Democratic pols.  This wasn't true in the 1960s and 1970s because liberal Repubicans from NYC were incumbents.  Rockefeller.  Javits.  Lefkowitz.  Lindsay (until 1971).  It was also a time where NY's Democratic Party was in the midst of its own civil war between its organization factions and the NDC (New Democratic Coalition, a liberal reformist faction).  The inside joke was that "NDC" meant "November Doesn't Count", and it's true that many NDC-backed Democrats were the most liberal and unelectable back in the day.

The most likely Republican to be elected Governor is Rudy Giuliani, because he's a media star that lots of registered Democrats have already voted for.  Giuliani's a media presence in NY media, even now.  None of the other guys mentioned here really are.

There's absolutely no reason what happened in Massachusetts in 2014 couldn't happen in New York at some point in the future.
