Yes, Cleveland was the mayor of Buffalo, New York and Coolidge was the mayor of Northampton, Massachusetts. I believe that Coolidge is the only mayor to be Vice President

Huh, interesting, I thought it would be more common, at least among the Governors-turned-Presidents.

Perhaps it's just my town, but I wonder if it's simply from a lack of trying. I have found local politics to be very personal, bitter, and not all that issue oriented. To me, the position of mayor comes across more as a social status thing than it does a politics thing.

Additionally, most well known mayors are from big cities and probably have the press for that city following them all the time. I would think that a mayor would enter an election with a lot more baggage than a congressman would.

At least in South Carolina, and I imagine in other states as well, it's been far more common for State Senators or for holders of other statewide offices to become Governor than Mayors.  Mayors typically don't establish political connections outside their own city.

Another example is New York State, of its 56 governors only five have been mayor, two from New York City, and one each from Schenectady, Buffalo, and Peekskill.

Lincoln Republican was  being sarcastic, because he already said the same name, with city and dates, just a few posts above.

What?

How dare you say I was being sarcastic?

I most certainly was not being sarcastic.

MohamedChalid had thought that Johnson may have been Mayor of a town in NC.

I was aware that Johnson had been  Mayor of Greenville, TN, but not that he may have been Mayor of a town in NC.

It is possible, you know, for someone to have lived in one state and served as Mayor of a town in that state, then moved to a different state, and served as a Mayor of a town in their new state.

After all, Johnson did live in North Carolina before he moved to Tennessee.

MohamedChalid, please be assured that I was not being at all sarcastic.  I was simply seeking some clarification.

Jeez.

I was just taking your side, since it seemed you had obviously done your research.

"How dare I" do that. Grow up, lighten up.

"How dare I" think you have a sense of humor.

Sorry.

My apologies.

But telling someone they are being sarcastic is not exactly flattering.

I was using it as a compliment. And there's nothing "not flattering" about it.

Why? Sarcasm is a good thing.

But you are not being sarcastic. You are being hysterical: your normal state these days.

I know you love trolling me, following my every word, and reading my very extensive posting history. And that's fine.

But I will not even dignify your latest personal attack on me with a response.

Nah, there's no problem with that. I did not read your first post. I thought he had been a mayor in NC (probably Raleigh). But that's the city he was born in. I knew that he was born in NC but later a governor and senator in TN.

But actually interesting that only few presidents served as mayor. I never thought about that.

Thank you.

Should you wish to view an extensive compilation specifically on offices held by Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates, please check out the following.  I compiled these details some time ago.
