Love George Strait, but see him more of a singles guy like Elvis or Conway Twitty.

Greatly appreciate your Bruce rankings and intrigued by your Blake rankings. While I totally agree with this assessment, I own too many to ignore, and I think some of his recent albums have been actual projects as his mainstream popularity declined.

The Road Less Traveled has rather weak singles (by his high standards) but the back end is just so great, especially the Merle cover, so that is my tops. Love is Everything is positively a masterpiece. Blue Clear Sky is carried by its strong group of singles. I think Beyond the Blue Neon is probably deep enough to challenge it for the 3 spot on its singles, but has much more depth - that still gets plenty of turns for me.

Here for a Good Time has singles that rather bothered - except for the masterpiece that is "Drinkin' Man", perhaps his best ever - but I go back to some of those non-singles pretty often.

May go back to other artists later, but King George has a few!

Hot takes. I love Get Behind Me Satan, but Elephant has so many classic cuts. I love that record.

Deja is a very sentimental and personal record for me. Devil and God is phenomenal, but man does Deja have some heavy hitters.

Few more:

Roxy Music
1. For Your Pleasure (1973)
2. Avalon (1982)
3. Stranded (1973)
4. Roxy Music (1972)
5. Country Life (1974)
6. Siren (1975)
7. Flesh + Blood (1980)
8. Manifesto (1979)

Roxy Music is my favorite 70's band. For Your Pleasure is a great album. I alternate between Stranded and their debut as my top choice album. Avalon is a great work as well - very different in character from the Eno or even Jobson era albums. If the "Pyjamarama/Pride and Pain" single were included in For Your Pleasure though perhaps it would push it to the top. I love that single - Paul Thompson's drums especially. I don't think any band likewise had as consistent an oboist as McKay. Sax yes, but not also oboe. Manzanera with Roxy, with Eno, with 801, with Ferry, and on his solo project is just awesome too - a great textural guitarist. Yes, Ferry often talked about having a guitarist like PF's David Gilmour but I think that does Manzanera a major disservice. Tracks like "Cindy Tells Me" and "Amazona" - just brilliant.

Have you read any RM books?

I have The Thrill of It All: Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music by David Buckley and I've read Re-Make/Re-Model: Becoming Roxy Music by Michael Bracewell.

Buckley's book has a lot of direct sources but he is quite critical of Ferry's solo work - even saying it is worse than any RM album. Bracewell's book is not for the casual fan and is more academic in nature but I definitely learned quite a bit about their start and their inspirations. He does not really take positions on the music and its more of a pre-history up to the release of the first album.

DiAnno Maiden is great sort of punkish & less theatrical than Bruce.
As for Off the Wall it doesn't have the pretense of say Dangerous or HIStory
Just pure unadulterated, youthful MJ. Obviously if you don't like commercial disco then it may not work for you

Bands in bold are those I've heard everything by, which you could crudely class as narrowing to my favourite bands, but the truth is I'm just as passionate about many of the albums for artists where I've lost interest in their future work/direction or have put some of their work off for later.

The Smiths: Meat Is Murder > The Queen Is Dead > The Smiths
The Cure: Disintegration > The Top > Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me
REM: Murmur > Document > Green
Jane's Addiction: Nothing's Shocking > Ritual de lo Habitual > Kettle Whistle
Alice in Chains: Dirt > Jar of Flies > Alice in Chains
Nirvana: Nevermind > In Utero > Bleach
Pearl Jam: Ten > Yield > Vs
Stone Temple Pilot: Core > Purple > Tiny Music...
Manic Street Preachers: The Holy Bible > Generation Terrorists > Everything Must Go
Radiohead: The Bends > OK Computer > Kid A
Green Day: Dookie > Insomniac > Nimrod
Matthew Good Band: Underdogs > The Audio of Being > Beautiful Midnight
Our Lady Peace: Clumsy > Happiness...Is Not a Fish You Can Catch > Naveed
Oasis: Definitely Maybe > What's the Story Morning Glory? > The Masterplan
Blur: Parklife > Modern Life Is Rubbish > The Great Escape
The Verve: A Northern Soul > A Storm in Heaven > Urban Hymns
Suede: Dog Man Star > Suede > Coming Up
Pulp: Different Class > His & Hers > This Is Hardcore
The Bluetones: Return to Last Chance Saloon > Science & Nature > Expecting to Fly
The Sundays: Reading, Writing & Arithmetic > Blind > Static & Silence
The Sugarcubes: Here Today, Tomorrow Next Week! > Life's Too Good > Stick Around For Joy
The Cranberries: Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? > No Need to Argue > Bury the Hatchet
Ryan Adams: Love Is Hell > Demolition > Heartbreaker
Muse: Origin of Symmetry > Showbiz > Absolution
The Music: The Music > Welcome to the North > Strength in Numbers
Modest Mouse: The Moon & Antarctica > Good News for People Who Love Bad News >  We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank

1. Southeastern - definitely not the best in terms of classic hits but obviously the deepest in quality by an untouchable margin
2. Something More Than Free - Two haunting ones and a strong front ~2/3 before you get to the back-end...
3. The Nashville Sound - Initially lower because the early releases were so poor they brought it down, but this is a solid project with four insta-classics and two nice hidden gems, which is enough to maintain the top three position.
4. Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit - "Cigarettes & Wine" holds up and "Streetlights" is probably one of the most underrated cuts but lacks much behind that
5. Sirens of the Ditch - not many boring skip songs which initially prompted me to put this higher but really hard to place anything here remotely close to his best
6. Here We Rest - Hard to believe an album with probably his best is last but it's not an 'album' if there is little beyond that.

Too difficult to rank most other favourites outside of Bruce/Strait/Beatles due to catalog depth (or extremely obvious quality variance for some classic country or folk artists), so I will leave at that for now since those have been done.

So you don't rate Strangeways Here We Come too highly? Were you a fan at the time and pissed off because they had already broken up when this came out?

Do you not count Hatful of Hollow as a full album? It has some studio items on it - it also crosses over with the Louder than Bombs compilation.

I love "Last Night I Dreamt Somebody Loved Me" and "Girlfriend in A Coma" from Strangeways album. As for The Queen is Dead the run from Cemetry Gates to the end of the album (minus Vicar in Tutu) is magic - though I personally prefer "Headmaster Ritual", "How Soon is Now" and "Barbarism Begins At Home" to the best songs from The Queen is Dead so it is a push for me - with Meat is Murder having better highs but The Queen is Dead having more ace songs.

King Crimson
1. The Court of the Crimson King
2. Red
3. Discipline

Come on man. How can you not include Larks tongues in aspic among at least the top three King Crimson albums?
[/quote]

I did give it a higher rating on RYM than Discipline - maybe I was thinking about the final comment from my review too much:)

Quote
Experimental, an interesting listen. Jamie Muir really stands out
with his percussion work particularly the Asian-sounding
instruments for the intro track. Challenging album from an era
when the general public was much more accepting of concept
work and experimentation. Wetton's vocal are strong and
heartfelt.  Fripp's guitars and mellotron work is equally potent.

As for the tracks "Larks' Tongue in Aspic, Part 2" is my favorite
track, and classic King Crimson. The softer numbers are nice as
well "Book of Saturday" and "Exiles".  I know I might be missing
the point with "Talking Drum", a nice idea all the same, but I
think the volume should have been turned up from the beginning
and the drums mixed a bit louder especially the bongos.

I see you like Piece of Mind the best for Iron Maiden - the choruses on that album are a bit of a disappointment for me and I vastly prefer Burr to Nicko on drums - so the first three albums are up there along with the mythic Powerslave.

My RYM review:
Quote
Hard to place my finger on it, but I don't like this album as much as their previous or following albums. Was it the less intimidating cover, the lack of balance between the two sides, or the over reliance on backing choruses? Nonetheless "The Trooper" is the only song on here that's an all-time classic on here for me.

Few more:

Roxy Music

I have not read any of the RM books.

Led Zeppelin
1. Untitled
2. Physical Graphitti
3. In Through The Out Door
4. II
5. III
6. Houses of the Holy
7. I

In what alternate universe is in through the outdoor not at the bottom of that list? Ahead of one and two even? Heresy!

It's better than III, Presence and Coda.

Coda is (deservedly) not on that list, and neither is Presence (which I'd still prefer listening to for Achelles Last Stand and Nobody's Fault But Mine over In Through the Out Door). And I grossly disagree with the low assessment of III, Zep's most underrated album. The Immigrant Song? Tangerine? Gallows Pole? A true hidden gem.

In the Evening is frankly the only genuinely good track on ITTOD. Fool in the Rain and All of My Love lack the grace of earlier Zep Ballads like Thank You and Battle of Evermore, and are overrated much like the album itself.
