He was certainly popular, but was he popular enough to win more than just his home state? It definitely had the effect of consolidating the Dixiecrat wing behind Kennedy in 1960 methinks.

Yes, but I'm sure the Shivers/Connally wing of the TX Dems would have openly backed Nixon without Johnson on the ticket.
