Quote On Friday morning, I sent a note to Corker’s office asking whether he would support Trump for renomination in 2020. “One thing your boss didn't address to my knowledge is whether he supports President Trump for renomination in 2020,” I wrote. “Since the president’s re-election campaign is up and running, and in light of Sen Corker's concerns about the president’s stability, will he weigh in on Trump for re-nomination?” And here’s what I got back from Corker’s communications director, Micah Johnson: “I don’t have anything to add to the senator’s comments yesterday.” Here's a question: Are there *any* current Republican Senators who, right now in 2017, would say on the record that they want Trump to be the party's nominee again in 2020? I'm sure if you asked Senate Dems the same question about Obama in 2009, many/most would have said that of course they want him as the nominee again next time around, but is there anyone in the Senate right now who'd say the same of Trump? I mean, Trump has already launched his 2020 campaign, so I'm assuming he'd be happy to take endorsements, if anyone was offering them. Trump's record as President, as far as the bulk of the GOP is concerned is that they support what he's trying to do; it's his words and his style that they don't like. Who's Bob Corker to moralize on Trump? He's the same Bob Corker who ran a campaign ad against Harold Ford, Jr. in 2006 depicting a young white woman handing a black male who resembled Ford her phone number on a piece of paper and said, "Call me!" in a sultry voice. He's Bob Corker; he approved that message, did he not? None of them have actually said that they support a primary challenge yet. They just say that they're agnostic....that is, that they're not sure who they'll support yet. Usually, this question isn't even asked, as no one is contemplating it. No one bothered to ask sitting Democratic members of Congress back in 2009 if they would support Obama's re-nomination in 2012, but I'm guessing that if this question had been put to them, then many/most of them would have said that yes, they'd like to see Obama run for a second term. But I'm guessing that some would say something like "Why are you asking about an election so many years in the future?" Of course, Trump invited this talk himself by launching his 2020 reelection campaign in 2017. No president has ever officially started their reelection campaign so early.
