Title: Clark County without Las Vegas
Post by: Anzeigenhauptmeister on September 13, 2017, 03:04:06 PM
Las Vegas amounts to about 30% of Clark County's population. If you take away Las Vegas' citizens, would the rest of the county still be heavily Democratic?
If so, when was the last time that a Democrat won Clark County without winning Las Vegas' exurbs?

Las Vegas doesn't really have any exurbs. Most of unicoporated Clark County, including the Las Vegas Strip, is basically a southward extension of Las Vegas.

The most Democratic parts of Clark County are not in Las Vegas proper anyway. (They're in North Las Vegas.) Moreover, some of the more Republican parts of Clark County are in Las Vegas proper (Summerlin and the other wealthy western suburbs). Overall, I wouldn't consider Las Vegas proper especially more urban than the rest of the county, and the county as a whole is not nearly as politically polarized geographically as most urban/suburban US counties.

That said, I don't have exact figures.

That northward extension of Las Vegas is actually pretty Republican,  that'd be a hit to the GOP to lose that.    It would be an overall loss for Dems though.

It has a few (Boulder City) but I think it'd still go Democratic.

In 2008 at least, there was almost no difference between Las Vegas proper and the remainder of Clark County:

Las Vegas (D+6): Obama 59.2%, McCain 38.8% (Obama +20.4)
Rest of Clark (D+5): Obama 58.2%, McCain 39.8% (Obama +18.4)
