 Roy Moore running for governor

GADSDEN, Ala. The man who lost his job as Alabama chief justice in a Ten Commandments controversy is running for governor.

Roy Moore became a hero to the Christian right when he refused to remove a monument of the Ten Commandments from the courthouse.

He announced today that he'll run for governor next year.

That could set up a showdown with fellow Republican Bob Riley, the incumbent governor. And it could make the Ten Commandments dispute a central campaign issue.

Two Democrats, Lieutenant Governor Lucy Baxley and former Governor Don Siegelman, are already running.

Moore took his appeals in the Ten Commandments case all the way to the Supreme Court, losing at every level. Since then, he's been traveling the country, speaking to church and conservative groups.

Hah, he'll win no doubt.  Riley v. Siegelmann would be the most competitive race, but Riley will lose in the primary to Roy.

I think Riley will barely hold off Moore, but either of them will beat Baxley or Siegelman.

If he runs third party that will virtually hand the race over to the Democrats.  He'll get perhaps 15% or more, nearly all Republicans.  The Religious Right is very powerful in Alabama, and many see Moore as some sort of a martyr because of the ten comandments issue.

Heres hoping he gets his ass kicked in the primary. Riley is a very good Governor.

I finally thought Democrats could gain some ground in Alabama and elect Siegelman again, and this happens.  SHEESH!

I'm not a fan of either and I'm very happy I don't have to vote in a primary like this but I guess I'd be a very slight lean to Moore.

Baxley wins, against either... I'd say Moore just falls short and an even weaker Riley limps into the general and loses by a solid margin. 

Ideally, I hope Riley wins the primary, narrowly, but alienates himself from the GOP malcontents who'd rally behind Moore in the general thus letting the Democrat, Baxley or Siegelman, win the governorship

The question is should he lose the primary would Moore through his support behind Riley to prevent the Democratic candidate from winning the governorship? In other words, would Moore (ironically, like some on the Left) cut his nose off to spite his face?

Moore is all about Moore.  He doesn't care for the GOP, the state of Alabama, or anything else but his own self interest.  If he loses, he'll probably say the state has condemned itself to damnation or some such nonsense.

Again, point out the far right wing views that I hold. I might see Moore as the lesser of two evils here. That doesn't mean I am in agreement with everything he stands for.

Why is Moore seen as so far right?  The only thing I know about the guy is he wanted to keep the 10 commandments on public property.  Not that big of a deal if you ask me.

He's also advocated the execution of homosexuals.  Let me try to find that quote.

Just...wow.

He did not call for the execution of homosexuals. He was describing the power the state wield in enforcing its perceived moral norms.

Regardless of the issue, a lot of people are going to have a problem with that language, because he is confusing to some degree a moral basis for law and a pure power basis. Philosophically, I disagree with him.

But, nonetheless, what he said was literally correct.

This is...interesting.

I was hoping he would start some crazy fringe party, if only to make things interesting.
