Title: 2000 Scenario V.P. Sam Nunn v Gov. George W Bush
Post by: Lincoln Republican on November 14, 2005, 07:56:39 PM
In 1992, Democratic Presidential candidate Governor Bill Clinton of Arkansas looks past geographic considerations in choosing a Vice Presidential running mate, and decides on a respected, experienced, capable southerner, with extensive foreign policy credentials, Senator Sam Nunn of Georgia.

The Democratic ticket of Governor Bill Clinton and Senator Sam Nunn defeat the Republican ticket of President George HW Bush and Vice President Dan Quayle in 1992.

President Clinton and Vice President Nunn are re-elected in 1996, defeating the  Republican ticket of Senator Bob Dole and former Congressman Jack Kemp.

Sam Nunn has by 2000 served 8 years as a very capable and respected Vice President, and before that, has served in the U.S. Senate for 24 years, 1972-1996.

In 2000, Vice President Sam Nunn is nominated, with only token opposition, as the Democratic Presidential nominee.  Nunn chooses respected and experienced Iowa Senator Tom Harkin as the Vice Presidential nominee.  Harkin has been serving in the U.S. Senate since 1984.

The 2000 Republican nominees are Governor George W Bush of Texas and former Defense Secretary Dick Cheney of Wyoming.

How does this election of 2000 turn out?

You're right.  Being elected as Vice President in 1992 would then mean Sam Nunn had served 20 years in the Senate, 1972-1992.  (actually 1973-1993 from being sworn in to the Senate to being sworn in as Vice President).

Thank you.
