Post by: ElectionAtlas on April 09, 2006, 05:48:11 PM
The 2006 Gubernatorial Predictions are now available.  Although not completely tested thus far, please feel free to try out the scripts at: 2006 Gubernatorial Predictions (https://uselectionatlas.org/PRED/GOVERNOR/2006/pred.php).  Please let me know (https://uselectionatlas.org/BOTTOM/bugs.php?type=enter) if you find any issues.
Enjoy,
Dave

Wow, this is awesome.

It's exactly as I imagined it could be. :)

Very cool, Dave.  Thanks! :)

There seems to be to bugs.  Images on the action=insert page are broken.  Also, update comments don't seem to work, or at least I can't find where they are used (that is, it doesn't display the comments for the different versions).

EDIT: Also, even when you update the prediction, the prediction list is not updated.  For instance, I idiotically Vermont as independent because I confused the Gubernatoral and Senatoral races.  I corrected it, but it still shows that I am predicting an independent win.  Version numbers aren't updating either.

It looks like I am the one person unable to post his predictions with this link.  :P

What problem are you having?

I have already contacted Dave, but I'll tell you too...

You know the page where you are supposed to log-in in order to be able to create a prediction map?  Well, once I logged in, and then clicked on the 'Create My 2006 Gubernatorial User Prediction' link, it kept bringing me back to the original log-in page whenever I clicked on it.  And then I have to go through the whole process over again.  It's frustrating.

Have you tried logging onto the main page, and then copying and pasting the URL into the address bar to get there?

It didn't make any difference.

It didn't make any difference.

Note a couple of changes from the Presidential Election Predictions:
 - inclusion of independent candidates (actually took a lot of work)
 - one version per day (if you already submitted a version on any given day, you can change your entry, but it over-writes the earlier version) - one way to limit "spamming" of the prediction board.
 - added some nice pie charts.

Will also do something with regard to "pickups".

Other suggestions are welcome.

Alcon - could you be more specific with "Also, update comments don't seem to work"?  which button / url are you trying to update?  As for the map, I didn't see a version of yours with VT as ind.  Could this be a cached image?  The "broken images" on the insert page are expected - this is the php script saving the images... I don't know why some browsers actually try to show them...

Frodo - did you try the cache suggestion?  Cookies must be enabled for your login to work.  After login, describe exactly what you see?  Does it say "Login Successful" at the top?

Thanks,
Dave

PS, there will be a similar Senatorial version out soon - once the bugs in the Gubernatorial script are squashed.

Dave,

When you make an update, there is a field where you can type in updates and prediction comments for that version.  It is on the page you receive after updating predictions.  You can type stuff in the box, but it shows up nowhere.  It was previously visible to anyone who viewed the prediction page.

The map does update.  However, the counts below it that show the number of holdings by each party does not.  This lists one independent for my prediction, of which there is none.

Hope that is clearer.

Thanks Alcon - this was a problem and is now fixed.  This affected any attempt to modify the first version.  The maps would update, but the actual prediction values and comments content would not.

The icons for the 2006 Gubernatorial Predictions are now under your avatar... for some reason, on this server, I was getting a black background when resampling the image... I seem to have it working back to the transparent background, but I can't explain why...

Wow, Dave!  Thanks a lot!  That's really cool!!!
Not to sound greedy, but more inquisitively, are we going to have a Senate prediction map soon?

The Gubernatorial Prediction scripts are stable enough that I encourage you to add your thoughts and analysis to the predictions.  (why do you think certain states are going to go the way you pick?, etc.)
- it helps to stimulate the discussion and makes for more interesting browsing.
Thanks,
Dave

Dave, would it be feasible to include all recent comments on the main page, instead of seperating them by version?  Perhaps it could indicate what version was being referenced.  For those of us who upgrade the prediction daily, the comment system is kind of difficult to utilise.  One has to check every single version.

Seeing the predictions made so far, it appears most here are quite confident in saying that Governor Carcieri of Rhode Island will be reelected.  i would like to wholeheartedly disagree.  The ultraliberal state gives him a 52% approval rating and his Republican Party has had so many bumbles and scandals it has enraged the state.  When Rhode Islanders get prepared to vote, their going to notice what party line he sits on and he won't be able to recover.  Does anyone disagree?

I don't particularly know a whole lot about the gubernatorial race in Rhode Island, but I've heard so little from there I suppose I assumed that Carcieri wasn't going to get too much serious competition.

I do think it is only a lean.  We haven't seen a poll since September, when Lt. Gov. Charles Fogarty was down about 11 points.  I think that Carcieri is in the lead, although he may be in some danger.

Welcome to the forum, by the way.

Dave, the Gubernatoral Predictions site is generating MySQL errors upon attempting to update.

Thanks Alcon,
Many apologies: I introduced an insidious bug when I created the Senate version...
All predictions made today from about 10am until now deleted the state information (the compiled info is still there, but the data for wins, confidence, percentage, etc. for each state is missing).  Please, rebuild your prediction from today and resubmit... this will correct the problem.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Dave

I like the work you have done on the gubernatorial and senate predictions.   We'll see how the political environment develops in the following weeks/months before election day.
