Title: Colorado Senate: Leading Republican to Exit Race
Post by: Deano963 on March 21, 2007, 12:22:48 PM
Very surprising:

Former Colorado Rep. Scott McInnis (R) is expected to end his Senate bid as soon as today, according to sources familiar with his thinking who asked not to be identified because they did not have permission to speak for the McInnis camp.

Well... that pretty much hands the seat to Udall, if I'm not mistaken.

There goes the last legitimate candidate they had.

I think it's a little early to pop the champaigne, but apparently the only other potential serious candidates who may yet run are ex-Rep. Bob Schaeffer and AG John Suthers.

Any forrumers from CO or who are very familiar with the CO scene care to give us the skinny on these two - brief summary of their politics, how much of a chance either would have against Udall?

Draft Tom Tancredo!  I really think he could have a shot, except for the fact I don't at all and don't want him to stop being a representative so don't run

We need more motorcycle riding Senators. I don't even know anything about his policy, but he'd be a great personality (it seems) to have in the Senate.

The guy retired because of bad health. Why would he return to the Senate?

Scott McInnis was clearly the most formidable Republican statewide candidate - possibly apart from former Governor Bill Owens.  Both John Suthers and Bob Schaffer have their respective weaknesses.  Suthers was barely elected in 2006 against weak opposition while Schaffer is a conservative in the mould of Marilyn Musgrave - he represented CO-4 in Congress.  Udall's chances of a comfortable victory increase - if this is true.

The Denver Post suggests why:

Not only does the national political environment still show voter dissatisfaction with Republicans, but GOP backers have paused at some of McInnis' past political decisions and current status as a lobbyist.

Additionally, former Sen. Bill Armstrong, known as the "godfather" of the state GOP, isn't backing him, and has thrown his support behind former U.S. Rep. Bob Schaffer - who hasn't decided whether he is running.

It also doesn't help McInnis that new CO-GOP Chair Dick Wadhams has such a close personal relationship with former Rep. Bob Schaffer.

Weird.  They're shuffling out one ex-Rep. and replacing him with another.

Democrats' chances of holding the Senate just got marginally better, though I figured they were probably going to win this seat anyways.

McInnis makes it official:

WASHINGTON — Former Congressman Scott McInnis announced today that he will take a pass on the 2008 U.S. Senate race, clearing the way for what could be a wide-open contest for the Republican nomination.
