Title: Rocky v LBJ 1960
Post by: Lincoln Republican on June 08, 2007, 10:10:31 AM
In 1960, Governor Nelson Rockefeller of New York pulls off an upset and defeats Vice President Richard Nixon to win the Republican Presidential nomination.   To pacify the party's conservative wing, Rockefeller selects Nebraska Senator Carl T. Curtis for Vice President.  Though a conservative, Curtis supports civil rights.

In another surprise upset, the Democrats pick Senate Majority Leader Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas for President.  Johnson picks long time friend and well respected Senator Hubert H. Humphrey of Minnesota for Vice President.  Humphrey helps to satisfy the more liberal wing of the party.

How does this election turn out

This was not an easy map to make. Johnson, a son of the South and, in 1960, known as a "conservative", would sweep the South against the patrician Easterner Rockefeller, and with the jovial Humphrey as his running-mate Johnson would perform well in the Midwest.

Nelson Rockefeller/Carl Curtis (R): 242 EV

I don't think LBJ would win MA and RI in 1960 after beating Kennedy for the nomination, even with the liberal Humphrey on the ticket.  Eisenhower won both those states big in 1956, but I think they would go to Rockefeller by about a 53-47 margin in 1960.

I do think MA and RI would go Democrat, the question is delaware, it went Dem in 1960, 1976, but went republican in 1948 and 68. I think De and CT are more battlegrounds than ri, it went 2-1 towards Truman running against Dewey.

I think you almost on the target with the few exceptions.

PA and NV to Rockefeller
MO to LBJ

I think what it would boils down to is who would be the better campaigner. IMO, Rocky would outshine LBJ.
