Title: Home State Victories MkII
Post by: Michael Z on February 16, 2004, 07:41:01 PM
This is in contrast to nclib's thread on potential candidates least likely to win their home state.

So, who do you think is MOST likely to win their home state? It's a tough one, but I personally am inclined to say Jmfcst.

Migrendel, despite his socialistic ways.

Dazzleman, definately - Connecticut could be a swing state if our candidates were just a tad more moderate

Win what? Texas? Sorry if this offends you, but I don't think a democrat could ever win in Texas.

Jcmfst is a Republican, or am I horribly mistaken?
I was reffering to winning my home state, which is possible, though it'd be an uphill battle.

Oh, okay. Sorry. I misunderstood you. MS is a very conservative state, but it is more winnable for the Dems than TX is.

jmfcst of course. Mainly because I can't see a Republican not winning Texas under any kind of normal circumstances in the near future...

I vote migrendel for the same reason.

I am not sure whether TX is THAT conservative, considering the fact that it's GWB's home state I don't think his result there was all that good. He didn't even get 60% there.

The vote will be hard, I think JMF and Migrendel are about as likely, but I'll vote for Migrendel since MA is more liberal than TX is conservative, imo.

I think it actually depends on what the election is for.
President
1 Dazzleman
2 Migrendel
3 jmf

Senator
1 jmf
2 Migrendel
3 Dazzleman

Governor
1 jmf
2 Dazzleman
3 Harry

Do I have to explain?

You mean that the citizens of Texas wouldn't want an extremist to be president of their nation and sit with his finger on the button, but rather to screw with the liberals in the senate?

Yeah, it's gotten more Republican since then though, and it's been the home state of a VP or Presidential candidate of the GOP for every election since 1980, except 1996. That goes a long way to explain the conservatism of TX.

It was only 8% above national average for Dole, 12% for GWB and 3% for GHB in 1992. So it's not extremely Republican, more like Illinois or New Jersey for the Dems.

I think that's somewhat accurate in that governor is the best shot I'd have.  Also, I could perhaps win the MS-3 House Seat, but it'd be a long shot.  Our Attorney General is a Democrat, as is our Agricultural Commissioner (a big deal here :) )

I think that if jmf ran for president he'd be seen and portrayed as way too conservative and that, in the end, even the voters of Texas would agree. If he ran for something else there wouldn't be that much attention from non-Texans.
Similarly, migrendel wouldn't win a governor's race from Mass. because at that level people there are still ready to vote for an attractive Republican, but not when it comes to the national level (a congressional Rep. gets seen as in league with the nation's DeLays, a Rep. governor doesn't). That explains migrendel's low rating there.
