Title: Stop and think of the history for a minute.
Post by: Keystone Phil on June 03, 2008, 04:44:11 PM
We all know I am certainly not the biggest Obama fan here but it's amazing when you stop and think that Barack Obama will be the nominee of the Democratic party for President of the United States. A black man is the nominee of a major political party for President of this country.

And he beat Hillary Clinton. It seems so surreal.

I cant believe the Clinton's lost this thing. I wonder what life will be like for them now?

Candidates that I support always lose, Phil. Iron law of the Beet-centered universe. :)

Wow, the same applies to Walter Mitty, and this time you were both supporting the same candidate.  Clinton never stood a chance.

I said back in the summer of 2005 to some of my friends that Hillary Clinton will never be the Democratic nominee and that if she did I would shave my head.

I get to keep my hair!

Hopefully they both endorse McCain now. It's not too late to join Hillaryis44, Beet :P

I find it amazing that a white male won a grand total of zero primary’s or caucus’s that the Democrats held. It really is a historical thing, I will agree.  Off topic a bit but is Jesse Jackson the only other “minority“ (non white male) to have won a democratic primary contest outside of this year?

well in a moment of bi-partisanship Phil, it is even more amazing that he won the party was often on the wrong side of a lot of important civil rights issues throughout history.

I'm sure all the old 19th Century Dems are rolling in their graves.

Note: Yes I am proud of what Dems have done in the last 40 odd years for Civil Rights, don't want to get that argument going again.

No doubt. A few years ago, I used to say I thought the first black candidate would be a Republican like Rice or Powell because Democratic African American politicans were like Sharpton and Jackson. Obama pushed his way on a wave very fast.

It's even more amazing when you consider that he defeated her with nothing more than a remake of the Bob the Builder theme song.

Anyone who misses what will happen tonight will have missed history indeed.

The only thing more historic than this would be Josh22 making up his mind who he'll vote for now.  ;)

John Breckinridge is going batsh**t, I'm sure.

Anyone else mildly reminded of 1880 by all of this, with Clinton as Grant?

Scandal-prone President['s wife] comes back after an intervening administration to run again, has a great base of support that's enough to get them 45% at the convention, but not enough to win?

[The Obama - Garfield analogy is, understandably, less solid.  It would only be comparable if  the Democrats were nominating G.K. Butterfield].

james carville said it best when he said diversity in the republican party means old white men vs. really old white men.

The history I'm thinking of is 1928, in more ways than one.

Also, 1976 with one party having a close election and another a fairly easy nominee.

Obama identifies as black, but he is not.  His ancestors were not slaves, but slave owners.

Remember: no matter how black Obama's skin is, deep down inside he's an old white man.

So it's an old white man versus a really old white man?

Business as usual, then.

Theodore Bilbo is rolling in his kiddy sized coffin.

99% white 1% black = black

This really is historic. This is the first time in the history of the western world that a non-white has had at least a 50-50 shot at being the leader of a western nation. The first time that a member of a race that was once enslaved and then discriminated against has a chance to lead a nation.

Beet, welcome to my world.  At least your candidate made it all the way to the end.  Mine petered out with less than one percent in Iowa.  I'm such a Doddball.

(I support Obama now, but saying my guy won is kinda like saying Italy won World War Two after switching sides...)

For the purposes of making sweeping historical observations, I chose to ignore that. :P
