My 83 year old grandmother, a hardcore Democrat who hates Bush, voted for McCain over Obama.

My other grandmother said she didn't vote. My parents both voted for McCain. Older sister voted for Obama.

Yeah a good chunk of what Obama ran on, his associations, creepy supporters, etc. seriously turned me off from him. I've also become a fan of Harold Ford, even if his background is sort of mediocre. I'd like to see him stage a comeback.

Mom (Democrat 1968-2008; Undeclared 2008-present)
1968: Humphrey
1972: Nixon
1976: Ford
1980: Reagan1984: Reagan
1988: Bush
1992: Bush
1996: Perot
2000: Bush
2004: Bush
2008: McCain (Romney in the primaries, she moved to NJ where undeclareds can vote in primaries)

Dad (Republican 1968-2008; Undeclared 2008-present)
Has voted for every Republican presidential candidate.  Voted for Huckabee in the 2008 primary and I cannot figure out why.  He would've voted for Rudy if he was still in.  He wouldn't vote for Romney because he thought he was a faker.  But I don't know why he picked Huckabee over McCain.  In hindsight, he wishes Romney would've won.

Mom's mom (Democrat  1932-2007)
1932: Roosevelt
1936: Roosevelt
1940: Roosevelt

1980: Reagan
1984: Reagan
1988: Bush
1992: Bush
1996: Clinton
2000: Gore
2004: Bush

Mom's brother (Republican  1962-present)
Voted for the Republican presidential candidate in every election except 1968, where he voted for Wallace  (he lived in an Italian neighborhood, neighboring a black neighborhood.  Racial  tensions were high and his vote was a product of that.  Thankfully, he no longer holds that animosity).

Sister #1 (Republican  1995-present)
1996: Dole
2000: didn't vote
2004: Bush
2008: McCain  (McCain in primary)

Sister #2 (Undeclared)
2000: didn't vote
2004: Bush
2008: didn't vote

Me (Republican  2001-present)
2004: Bush
2008: McCain  (voted for McCain  in the primary)

The rest of my family refuses to vote and doesn't trust any politician for the most part.

Unaffiliated, couldn't vote in Republican primaries in CA. Had she been able to, she probably would have voted for McCain. She wasn't in on that "Operation Chaos" bull, she and I liked Obama and both considered voting for him in the general, especially after the Palin pick.

I'll guess here, I think I can figure it out.

Dad (I - GA):

1984: Reagan
1988: Bush Sr.
1992: Clinton
1996: Clinton
2000: Gore
2004: Kerry
2008: McCain Primary: Huckabee

Mom (D - GA)

1972: Nixon

1984: Reagan
1988: Not sure (she said she hated Dukakis, however)
1992: Clinton
1996: Clinton
2000: She said she didn't like either Gore or Bush
2004: Kerry
2008: McCain Primary: Huckabee

Maybe he just really respects combat veterans.  Though I don't know if Gore is technically considered to be a combat vet, at least he went overseas.

Yeah, although I doubt my dad does not soley votes on that, he was in The Army for a while.

He's a big disliker of Bush and Obama, for different reasons, but he has good backup for it. (I really should try to make him take the PM test. I made my mom take it, her score was E: +0.9 and S: +1.22)

Huh. I made my mother take the PM quiz & she got -0.2, -0.3.

How did she vote for Barr then? Or was it just a general protest vote against the 2 parties?

Pretty much. Actually, almost every ticket she's voted for for President has really been a vote against the opposition. I think the only time she's ever voted for someone was for McGovern.

My granddad is a big Republican. He claimed he was one in the 1930s and 40s when the south was 90% democrat. My mom is a moderate but didn't like Obama but also doesn't like the Iraq war.  My dad is pretty right winged. The rest of my cousins and aunts are Republicans except for my cousins in DC.

My dad toured with the Young Republicans in support of Barry Goldwater. The first person my mother voted for was George McGovern. They have stuck with their respective parties ever since but haven't voted in the last couple of elections due to their votes canceling one another out.

My parents have almost certainly never voted for a Republican for President, although one or both may have voted for Anderson in 1980. They lived in Massachusetts at the time and would have been a part of his target demographic, although both adore Carter now. Other than 1980, definitely Democratic in every election since their first in 1972 (although my mom turned 18 only a few months before the election in 1972, so she might not have voted; or maybe she did, given the hype around the change in the voting age).

Otherwise, my brother voted for Kerry and for Obama, as have I. My sister apparently did vote this year, much to my surprise, and for Obama.

Various and sundry more distant family members are fairly split and not, for the most part, all that interesting.

My Dad passed away in 2006 but may never have voted in a Presidential election.

I'm not close with my mother but she's one of those Independent types that doesn't think the GOP is socially conservative enough (no wonder we aren't close), but I think she votes Republican anyway.  She did tell me she was a liberal in the 70's, so I'll guess:

2008: McCain
2004: Bush
2000: Bush
1996: Dole
1992: Bush
1988: Bush
1984: Reagan
1980: Carter
1976: Carter (maybe Ford, she's from Michigan)

My mom's father passed away in 2003.  He was more moderate ideologically, but more Republican than his wife.  He made fun of my grandmother for voting for Perot instead of Bush.

My mom's brother is the D.A. for Kalamazoo County Michigan and is an elected Republican, and I would presume he has voted accordingly.

My dad's parents were likely Democrats, and the only one of my great uncles I have left is very much a Democrat - though he voted for McCain this year.

I think it was mostly Bush fatigue and I also think they both genuinely liked Obama. I think I helped convince them to vote for Obama. I actually liked McCain but I felt Obama was what we needed at this time. I probably see eye to eye a bit more with McCain on economic issues, particularly the way McCain voted before the middle of this decade, but Obama just struck me as the candidate who would help motivate the country to fix its problems as well as gain respect abroad.

My brother and I have always voted for the Democrats.  He's more socially conservative than I am, but he hates the GOP just as much as I do.

My uncle in Florida is an Obama supporter because he couldn't stand the witch (his words) and well, he was touched by the story of a black man rising to power.
His daughter is also a Democrat, but she thought Michelle was racist and supported Hilary instead.  Her husband has voted for the winner in every election but 2004 (when he voted for Kerry).
As for the rest of my family, I really have no clue.

In the United States, my parents probably would have been straight Democratic. I think my mom would've voted for Clinton in the primaries, though, and she really like Edwards in 2008 and 2004. My dad doesn't care for American politics, but would probably be straight Democrat.

In actual elections they voted in/could've voted in, now:

Mom
1993: Bloc
1997: [didn't vote. I guess Bloc]
2000: [didn't vote. I guess Liberal]
2004: [didn't vote. Liberal]
2006: [didn't vote. Conservative]
(France 2007): Sarkozy (UMP)
2008: Liberal

Provincially, she voted for the PQ all the time until we moved to Saudi Arabia. Is now a federalist, but wouldn't vote for the PLQ (because she dislikes Charest) and she thinks the ADQ is retarded. She probably would've voted PQ in 2008 though, just 'cause she dislikes the PLQ/Charest. Probably voted Liberal provincially in Ontario in 2007. She voted YES in 1980 and 1995.

Dad
If he voted federally at all, it probably would've been Bloc until roughly 2000. In 2006, he probably would've voted Conservative, and probably in 2008 too, but he told me he'd vote the way I'd tell him too since he doesn't pay attention to Canadian politics (you can't blame him), so Greenies. He probably would've voted Green in Ontario in 2007.

He was a member of the PQ for a few years and actually campaigned for the PQ provincially in the '80's. He canvassed for the YES in 1980 and therefore voted YES in 1980 and 1995. He doesn't care for Quebecois politics anymore. I still see him voting PQ.

His first vote in France was in 2007, where he voted for Sarkozy and would probably do so again today. When he lived in France, he was a Breton nationalist and didn't vote. Though he did stick up Giscard posters with his boss in 1974 for fun.

My family in Canada is divided. One of my aunts, who pays a lot of attention to world politics, would have voted Democrat in the US for a long time, but I suspect she supported Clinton in 2008. In Canada, she's a diehard nationalist (and Trudeau hater), therefore straight PQ/Bloc. In France, she supports the PS and would've voted for the Mentally Insane Lady in 2007. One of my uncles is a card-carrying member of the PLQ and was a federal Liberal until he voted Tory (gasp) in 2006. He is a Trudeau-fan. One of my other uncle told me he voted QS in 2007 and Liberal provincially in 2008. He is probably a straight Bloc supporter federally. My part-Italian uncle voted Tory in 2008, but his wife didn't.

My family is France is... I don't know. One of my aunts, the one who is a local councillor for the Green Party, is anti-Sarkozy. Probably Royal in 2007. I suspect she voted the Socialist list for the Senate in 2008 (yes, she was in the electoral college!). Her husband (technically not married though. whatever) is a bit of a wacko conspiracy theorist and probably doesn't vote at all.

My parents are straight Democrats, though in 2008 they supported Hillary in the primaries. My Dad's parents are pretty liberal, to the point that my grandma voted for Norman Thomas in 1948 ("I was always told, if you don't like any of the candidates, vote for Norman Thomas").

My Mom's parents were prototypical New Deal Democrats. My Grandpa's parents were immigrants (Italian-American Dad, French-Canadian Mom) who were Republican when they arrived in the late 1910's (prosperity i guess). Then the economy tanked and they became Democrats. My grandpa was a veteran (the head of the disabled American veterans) who was a very pro-labor lawyer. He was good friends with Lyndon Johnson and Hubert Humphrey.

Anyways, here is how I would have voted (I could go way back, but I'll start post-war)

1948-Truman (D) One of my favorite Presidents
1952-Stevenson (D) After so many good Democratic years, why stop?
1956-Eisenhower (R) Prosperity=My Vote
1960-Kennedy (D) Another one of my favorites, + a chance to elect a fellow Catholic
1964-Johnson (D) Prosperity
1968-Humphrey (D) No way would I vote Nixon, and Wallace was still too racist.
1972-Nixon (R) Humphrey, Wallace, or Jackson in the primaries. McGovern was too liberal.
1976-Carter (D) Scoop in the primaries. No fan of Carter, though no fan of Ford either.
1980-Reagan (R) Kennedy in the primaries. I consider myself a Reagan Democrat-lite
1984-Reagan (R) Prosperity
1988-Dukakis (D) Good governor. Actually quite a moderate record.
1992-Perot (REF) Don't like Clinton too much, though I may have voted for him anyway.
1996-Clinton (D) Prosperity
2000-Bush (R) 20/20 no way. But I don't like Gore, and I might vote on social issues after prosperity
2004-Kerry (D) Not a big fan, though I hated Bush's first term
2008-Obama (D) The first nominee who I have been TRULY passionate about.

My parents aren't American citizens, but they both loved Bill Clinton. Dad would have voted for Gore in 2000, my mom would have probably voted Nader and then hated herself for the next 4 years. They both supported Kerry strongly in 2004; I'm not sure who they would have supported in the primaries, probably Kucinich. In 2008, they were both strongly for Clinton (though my mom really liked Edwards, but thought he didn't have a shot), and dinners were understandably pretty tense and full of arguments from like January through May. My dad came around to Obama after Clinton dropped out, and my mom finally came around after she heard Palin's speech and was terrified by it.

Father (registered Independent from 1974 until 2001, Republican ever since)

1976: Ford
1980: Clark
1984: Reagan
1988: Paul
1992: Perot
1996: Perot
2000: Browne
2004: Bush
2008: McCain
My dad was a libertarian leaning moderate until 9/11. Ever since then the fundies have brain washed him.........

Both my parents have voted straight Labour since they could vote as far as I know, on all levels although my Mum nearly went UKIP in the Euros in May. My sister votes Lib Dem in general elections and Labour on euro and local levels. I'll probably be voting Labour in my first general election (which will probably be 2014-2015 now), or Green if they field a candidate here.

Time for the grandparents:

Papa Bill (father's father) (registered Republican from 1952-1992, registered Independent from 1992-1997, when he died from lung cancer)

1952: Eisenhower
1956: Eisenhower
1960: Nixon
1964: Johnson
1968: Nixon
1972: Nixon
1976: Ford
1980: Clark
1984: Reagan
1988: Paul
1992: Perot
1996: Browne
Like my father my grandfather was a libertarian leaning moderate. He registered as a Republican to support Eisenhower (being a soldier himself, he saw Ike as a role model). In 1992, after 40 years of being a Republican, he changed his registration to an Independent to voice his opposition to the two party system (he had felt disenfranchised since 1988). He would die an Independent.

Grandma (father's mother) (registered Republican since 1954)

1956: Eisenhower
1960: Kennedy
1964: Goldwater
1968: Nixon
1972: Nixon
1976: Ford
1980: Reagan
1984: Reagan
1988: Bush
1992: Perot
1996: Dole
2000: Bush
2004: Badnarik
2008: Barr
My grandmother registered as a Republican in 1954 (to the chagrin of her Democrat father). Her most memorable vote was for John F. Kennedy (the only Democrat she ever voted for), the only president who was a "real looker". She was a party faithful for a long time until 2004, when she voted for Michael Badnarik over George W. Bush.

As you can kind of tell, libertarianism kind of runs in the family.

Grandpa (mother's father) (registered Democrat from 1955 until his death this May)

1956: Stevenson
1960: Kennedy
1964: Johnson
1968: Humphrey
1972: Nixon
1976: Carter
1980: Reagan
1984: Reagan
1988: Bush
1992: Bush
1996: Dole
2000: Bush
2004: Bush
2008: McCain
My grandfather was a conservative Democrat. He was just too lazy to change his registration when he started voting Republican in the 80s.

Grandma (mother's mother) (registered Democrat in 1955)

1956: Stevenson
1960: Kennedy
1964: Johnson
1968: Humphrey
1972: Nixon
1976: Carter
1980: Reagan
1984: Reagan
1988: Bush
1992: Bush
1996: Dole
2000: Bush
2004: Bush
2008: McCain

It's called strategic voting. He doesn't want the Republicans to co-sign a big government agenda, and if that's the set of options, he'd rather just have the Democrats be the ones doing it. Not hard to understand.

Thank you for the defense.  That is exactly the point.  When a big government republican is president, republicans in congress will sign on to whatever agenda they put forth.  When a democrat is president - especially if Hillary Clinton became president, they know who to oppose.  It's more difficult with Obama because some in congress are worried they will be called racist if they oppose his policies.
Even Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins would be voting against Hillary - thats how much the republicans detest and loathe the Clintons.

Dad (1945- )

1972: Nixon
1976: Ford
1980: Reagan
1984: Reagan
1988: Bush
1992: Perot
1996: Clinton
2000: Gore
2004: Bush
2008: McCain

I'm not sure if he had a right to vote in 1972 since he became citizen roughly about that time, but he would have surely voted for Nixon. He was a huge Republican during the cold war like most people who immigrated from communist countries, moved to center in 1990s and then back to the right after 9/11. He's really a domestic moderate and foreign-policy hawk.

edit: yes, Nixon in 1972.

Mom (1949- )

None, at least in last 20 or so years. She really hates politics in general.

Me (1978- )

2000: Bush
2004: Bush
2008: McCain

Sister (1980- )

2000: Gore
2004: Kerry
2008: Obama

2000 was so funny because both sister and me were trying to persuade Dad who was undeceided all the way to the Election Day.

A little off topic but in 1992, I worked at Key Tronic in the Spokane Industrial Park and we wanted to see how people were voting there.  It came out about 2/3 Perot 1/3 Clinton and somebody admitted they were voting for Bush.

My Dad's parents were both raised as Chicago Democrats, but they switched over to the Republicans soon after they were married.  My Mom's Dad was a Republican.  Her Mom voted for Dewey in '48 and after feeling the disappointment of the stunning Truman upset, she never voted again, lol!

Mom and Dad, both Republicans, but voted for Anderson in '80 because they thought Reagan was an over-priviledged actor (now they think he's one of the greatest Presidents ever).

1976 Ford
1980 Anderson
1984 Reagan
1988 Bush
1992 Bush
1996 Dole
2000 Bush
2004 Bush
2008 McCain

My brother, a solid conservative Republican.

2004 Bush
2008 McCain

I was a registered independent from 2000-2008, before joining the Republican Party after the '08 elections.  I started out as a general conservative in the late '90s/early '00s, then became alienated and started heading leftward after the Iraq invasion before finally shifting towards civil libertarianism/paleoconservatism this year.

2000 Bush
2004 Bush
2008 McCain

Dad: Straight Republican since 1984. Sort of a David Brooks type RINO that mostly just cares about taxes, pretty much.

Mom: Since she moved here? Straight Republican since 1984. She regrets it though, she's always been closer to people like Paul or Buchanan than the 'mainstream' of the GOP anyway.

Sisters: Too young to vote, saw through both candidates last election.

Me: Pretty similar to my mom, minus the catholic perspective on certain issues.

My grandfather was a Republican even when the South was solid Democrat. My mother said she was a left leaning Democrat and supported Jimmy Carter. She switched during the Reagan years. My grandmother came from a prominent Democratic family and voted that way till she married my grandfather. My dad, I am not sure. His family immigrated from Greece in the 20s. He's been voting Republican for a while, but I'm not sure when it started. My voting record has been mixed, but mostly leaning toward the Republicans. I've voted for some Democrats locally and for Lt Governor of SC.

Dad: Born and raised in Atlanta, a mainstream democrat. Moderate on social issues, liberal on fiscal issues. Very partisan
1972: (R) Nixon- he said he thought McGovern was too "out there"
1976: (D) Carter- very excited, stood in line for 3 hours to vote for him
1980: (D) Carter
1984: (D) Mondale
1988: (D) Dukakis
1992: (D) Clinton- my younger brother was actually born on election day 1992, so he might not have had time to vote, but he did support Clinton
1996: (D) Clinton
2000: (D) Gore
2004: (D) Kerry
2008: (D) Obama

Dad's father: Born in north Georgia in 1918. He was a devout southern baptist, but also a yellow dog Democrat through and through. He even voted for McGovern in 1972
2008: He had reservations about Obama, but really liked Joe Biden. He died in January of 2009 after a lengthy time in the hospital. I think he would have broken for Obama eventually. He told me he only voted Republican once in his life- when his neighbor was running for congress as a republican. He said he didn't stand a chance so he figured one vote for him wouldn't hurt the democrat.

Mom- Grew up in Suburban areas of Atlanta and Cincinnati. She's not really that focused on politics, but she claims to be completely moderate
1976: (D) Carter- I think everyone in Georgia voted for Carter that year
1980: (R) Reagan
1984: (R) Reagan
1988: (R) Bush
1992: (R) Bush -she was kinda tied up giving birth that day, but I assume she supported Bush again
1996: (R) Dole
2000: (R) Bush
2004: (R) Bush- she claimed to be undecided until election day but finally broke for Bush
2008:(D) Obama- she became a special education public school teacher a few years prior and her new career made her more concerned with public school funding. I guess she trusted Obama more on this issue. We all thought this was an abrupt swing but we were happy, nonetheless.

Mom's mom: She was born in 1930 in Washington DC, the daughter of an italian mother and a german father. She moved to Atlanta as a teenager, met my grandfather who was an Irish Catholic New Yorker. She converted for him. Lives in the Atlanta suburbs.

1960: (D) Kennedy- JFK is still her favorite president to this day. She has a ton of Kennedy memorabilia and still cries when she talks about the day he was shot.
1964: (R) Goldwater- she voted against Johnson, but not for the reason you think. She was convinced Johnson was part of a conspiracy to assassinate JFK and she always despised him because of it
1968: (R) Nixon
1972: (R) Nixon
1976: (D) Carter- again, everyone in Georgia voted for him
1980: (R) Reagan- this is probably her second favorite president
1984: (R) Reagan
1988: (R) Bush
1992: (R) Bush
1996: (R) Dole
2000: (R) Bush
2004: (R) Bush
2008: (R) McCain- she and I got in many a fight about this election. She absolutely hates Obama and is convinced he is the sole reason for every problem in this country. I think it's a mix of pure politics and issues with his race and ethnic background.

My parents have voted republican since the 80's. So has my whole extended family, with only my crazy Auntie ever defecting when she voted for Perot twice. My family's weird in that each branch represents a different kind of Republican: my father's side are all Southern Baptist fundies, my mothers side are all New England liberal Republicans, and my immediate family are the business/establishment group. But they're all Republican.

My Mom:
1984: Reagan (R)
1988: Bush (R)
1992: Bush (R)
1996: Clinton (D)
2000: Bush (R)
2004: Bush (R)
2008: McCain (R)

My Maternal Grandfather: (guesses based things he's told me & such)
1960: Kennedy (D)
1968: Humphrey (D)
1972: McGovern (D) this surprised me. However, I'm running on four year old memories of him saying he never liked Nixon, etc.

I'd see my grandfather as a Nixon/ Reagan Democrat. Only wrinkle in that is he likely never voted Nixon. Probably voted straight Republican or close to it following Carter. Not sure, but I think he would've voted for fellow Michiganian Ford in 1976.

Dad:

Came from a very WASP-y country club Republican family; volunteered for Goldwater back in 1964 in his youth.  So you'd expect straight Republican, right?  Well, I'm assuming he did vote straight Republican for many years.  But not recently: Clinton's moderation, and his disgust with the Religious Right and neocon interventionism, have made him a swing voter that leans Democratic on the federal level.  Since 1992 (the first election I was old enough to notice; was 7 then):

1992- H.W. Bush (R)
1996- Bill Clinton (D)
2000- I'm honestly not sure; he disliked both candidates
2004- John Kerry (D)
2008- Barack Obama (D)

Mom:

Her parents were technically born here but spent their childhood in Poland, the sort of working-class Catholic whites that probably voted in huge numbers for Kennedy in 1960 and Reagan in 1980.  She was politically apathetic for most of her life, probably a mild liberal on social issues and mild conservative on economics.  Then three things happened: Lewinsky, 9-11, and Fox News, and she took a hard right turn.  These days I try to avoid talking politics with her. :P

I think 1992 might have been the first time she voted in a long time; pretty sure it's been straight R since then.

Grandparents:

I'm pretty sure they were all heavily Republican.  Most of my family has historically been pretty conservative, but a couple of my cousins (and probably one of my uncles) are definitely D-leaning.

My family and I are all immigrants, naturalized in 07.. My parents voted for 2008, mom waited 5 hours in line to happily vote for Obama and my father voted as well for Obama. 2012 is my first election. When we first got here we we're receptive to both sides but as time went on the family felt the Republican party and its members are unwelcoming and not as tolerate socially and progressive economically as the Dems. Also, aunts and uncles all voted Democrat save one uncle who voted for Bush in 00 over gun control. Since then they've voted Dem straight in presidential and congressional.

Mother doesn't vote, she's left-libertarian.

Father passed away in 1997, hard to say but probably also mostly libertarian by today's standards.
His previous votes that I know of:
(1996) Clinton
(1992) Perot
(1988) Dukakis*
(1984) Reagan*

*only somewhat sure on these.

Oh and my voting:

1980: Reagan
1984: Reagan
1988: Bush
1992: Bush
1996: Dole
2000: Bush

2008: McCain
2012: Republican

Dad:

1992: Bush

2000: Bush
2004: Bush
2008: Supported McCain, but didn't vote. (Romney in primary)
2012: Republican (He's supporting Mitt Romney)

My Mom doesn't vote, but she's an independent. I'll put who she supported in recent years:

2004: Bush (She was middle of the road moderate at the time)
2008: McCain (Leaned slightly left, but mainly a moderate)
2012: Republican (Moderately Conservative)

Uncle (Dad's brother):

Dad

voted Republican in every election from 1972 to 2004 but voted for Obama in 08

Mom
didn't vote in 1972 or 1976. Voted for Anderson in 80 and voted Republican from 84-04 and for Baldwin in 08.

Mom's Dad
not sure if he voted in the 40s or 50s but I know he voted for JFK in 1960 and LBJ in 1964. He was all republican after that

Mom's Mom
grew up in Irish Catholic family and a loyal democrat at first voting for Truman, Stevenson, Kennedy LBJ. She voted for Nixon in 1968 and never looked back

Dad's Mom
She I think has voted democrat in every election except for McGovern, Mondale and maybe Dukakis

Dad's Dad
He was Canadian and he wasn't allowed to vote until 1964. I think he voted for Johnson in 64, Nixon both times, Ford in 76, Reagan both times, and Bush in 88. He voted for Clinton in 92 and probably voted for him in 96 (he died a few weeks after the election.)

^That is really the only interesting voting record in my family. Every one else votes either straight Democrat (my father's side) or straight Republican (my mother's side). People on my father's side may have voted for W. in '04 and McCain, and people on my mom's side may have voted for Perot in '92, but that's about it.

Dad
My dad's fairly moderate and says that he doesn't vote for any particular party... however, he always votes for a Democrat. He didn't vote during the 80's, but I doubt he'd have voted for Reagan as he is often critical of him. My dad's favorite President of all time is Bill Clinton, and he still misses him. However, he is also a big fan of Obama and will be voting for him this year.
1976: Carter
1980: Carter
1984: Did not vote.
1988: Did not vote.
1992: Clinton
1996: Clinton
2000: Gore
2004: Did not vote.
2008: Obama

Mom
She is the exact opposite of my dad. She prides herself on being an arch-conservative and she hates the Democratic party. Actually, she is rather moderate on a few social issues and supports measures like gun control. Go figure. Oh yes, she loves George W. Bush too.
1984: Reagan
1988: Did not vote.
1992: Bush
1996: Did not vote.
2000: Bush
2004: Bush
2008: McCain

Grandfather
Very conservative and hasn't voted a Democrat since John F. Kennedy. He isn't a Republican, he just doesn't like the Democratic Party at all. This began during the Johnson administration and hasn't abated since. I do want to make a note that he, like my Grandmother, voted for Kerry in '04 due to their dislike of George W. Bush.
1956: I have no clue.
1960: Kennedy
1964: Goldwater
1968: Nixon
1972: Nixon

1984: Reagan
1988: Bush
1992: Perot
1996: Dole
2000: Bush
2004: Kerry
2008: McCain

Grandmother
She, like my grandfather, is pro-Republican, though she has been sympathetic to a couple of Democrats over the years. For example, she is very religious and voted for Jimmy Carter because she said he was a "good Christian man." She really disliked George W. Bush and was a huge Kerry supporter in 2004, which surprised me to say the least. Today, though, she is staunchly anti-Obama.
1960: Kennedy

1984: Reagan
1988: Bush
1992: Bush
1996: Dole
2000: Bush
2004: Kerry
2008: McCain

Great-Grandmother
My great-grandmother is a staunch Democrat who has never voted Republican in her entire life. She still looks up to Franklin Roosevelt and is one of the few old-style New Deal Democrats around. Sadly, I do not believe she is healthy enough to vote this year, but she'd vote Obama if she could.

Oops I didn't mean to underline everything. Keep in mind too that I wasn't old enough to vote until 2003. My dad's family is conservative, but not until my grandpa switched to Republican after 1960. He is a firm believer in limited government, supplied side economics, and strong defense. The rest of his family is still moderately democratic I think. My grandma's family has a steel mill/union background and is strongly democratic but she is conservative like my grandfater was.  On my mom's side of the family, they are conservative but have voted democrat because of union membership and upbringing during the end of the depression.  However, it wouldn't surprise me if some of them voted for McCain in 2008. I know my mom's dad refused to vote for McCain because he was a Republican and refused to vote for Obama due to cultural reasons. While he voted democrat pretty much his entire life, he was strongly conservative on alot of issues that weren't economic related. Both he and my grandma were fans of John F. Kennedy whom I have come to admire in a few ways as well. My dad's brothers and his sister and their families vote straight GOP. My mom's brother is comparable to Strom Thurmond in alot of views.  As for myself, here is my primary voting record in modern elections.

1952- Eisenhower
1956- Eisenhower
1960- Nixon
1964- Goldwater

The more I read the voting histories of family members the more amazed I am that Kerry lost and Obama managed to win.

90% of people vote the same as their parents from what I've observed outside of this forum. Those who don't perhaps don't register until a later age.

My American Uncle (got citizenship in 1989) Kind of wacky in his voting. My father has voted for the Democrat in every presidential election since 1972 (his first) except for 1980, in which he voted for John Anderson. Unsurprisingly, he is a registered Democrat.
My mother does not seem to have strong political views and does not always vote, but I don't believe she has ever voted Republican. She is an independent.
Both of my grandmothers are lifelong Democrats. My paternal grandmother even claims to have met FDR when she was a teenager living in Philadelphia and, afterward, voted for him in 1944.

Family used to be pretty republican when the moderates were dominating.  Yes, my family even voted for Uncle Barry in '64.  Then, starting in the mid 80s when it became clear that corporate America was taking over, it's been mostly democratic voting, outside of 2004.

Mom and Dad have both voted straight Republicans since they could vote so.

My Maternal Grandmother voted for JFK in '60, but hasn't voted D since. My mom's brothers both voted for Obama, not sure other than that. My dad's family is mostly Republican as well. I think my aunt and my cousins voted for Obama, however.

Dad- A lifelong Republican in the mold of John Chafee or Nelson Rockefeller. He voted voted for McCain over Bush in the 2000 primaries; ever since Bush, he's been talking about leaving the party. Voted for Obama.

Mom- Pretty centrist. Not very into politics.

Dad's parents- His mom is a liberal Democrats from Boston; despises anything and every Republican. My grandpa on this side died about 8 years before I was born. He was from West Virginia though, so I'll assume he voted Democrat as well.

Mom's parents- Great examples of Dixiecrats who never switched parties. My grandma usually laments at how "un-American" Obama is and says that Carter was the worst President ever. My grandpa on this side is somewhat to the left of my grandma though. They'll still vote for some local Democrats like Mary Landrieu.

Other than that, my extended family is staunchly Republican. My aunts love to hate Michelle Obama and the consensus among them is that Obama was born in Kenya. I consider myself Conservative Democrat, but next to them, I look like a Bernie Sanders socialist.

Mary's mostly a fiscally conservative technocrat type. She was on the Turnpike Commission and an ally of Romney when he was governor. Back when gay marriage was legalized she was one of the people freaking out about it but she seems to have mellowed on that since then. She has a specific (and, to be quite frank, entirely reasonable) grudge against NPR but doesn't seem to be opposed to it on principle.

Having immigrated from Russia & the Ukraine in two waves, the first in 1995 and 1997, few people in my family have voted. My paternal grandfather, a former CPSU member and a colonel in the Soviet Army who only narrowly avoided Afghanistan, cast his first and only vote in 2008, supporting John McCain for President and Jerrold Nadler for the House of Representatives. Unfortunately, he passed away from cancer in 2008. My mother also registered for the first time in 2008; she voted for McCain in 2008 and was then a Strickland/Portman voter in 2010 (voting against Dennis Kucinich, I forget the candidate names, both times).

My parents' first election was in 1994, in California. Voted straight-ticket Democrat, including against Pete Wilson. Consistently straight-ticket Democratic after that. Are still very proud for not jumping on the Governator train.

Dad kept his Gore/Lieberman sticker on his car until 2008. They wanted to GO TO WASHINGTON D.C. AND TAKE BACK THE WHITE HOUSE with Howard Dean, but that obviously failed, so they had to settle with Kerry. Voted for Billary in 2008. I'm also pretty sure 2008 is the only time my parents have ever voted differently, with my mom voting Obama and my dad leaving it blank, though they both made sure to vote for Prop 8.

They both voted straight-ticket Republican in 2010 and will probably do so again in 2012.

I've been a solid Democrat through my short life, but I've considered voting for the Green Party on some occasions. It hasn't happened yet. Growing up during Bush II, I have made a rule for myself to never vote Republican, and I've kept that promise. The only time I voted other than Democratic was for a Green-like Independent in this year's primary for Lieutenant Governor (I don't like Brad Owen). I've worked at bookstores and done volunteer work, I hope to add more to my resume in the coming years. Someday I might want to become a history teacher.

2004 - Not old enough to vote, would have voted Kerry (D)
2008 - Obama (D) (first election I voted in, voted for Obama in caucus and general)
2012 - Going to vote for Obama (D)

Mother (b. 1952)
My mom's been a solid Democrat all her life. She's worked at Boeing (in the 70s) and as a recess supervisor for public schools (later in life). Exceptions: Both of my parents voted Republican for Daniel J. Evans for Governor in the 1970s, he was a respected and popular moderate. Some today would regard Evans as a RINO. The only other time was when my dad voted for Rob McKenna (R) for Attorney General over Deborah Senn (D) in 2004, he didn't like Senn for some reason. He's voting for Inslee (D) against McKenna (R) in the Governor's race this year. My parents seemed to initially support Hillary Clinton (D) for the 2008 Democratic nomination, but eventually became Obama supporters over the course of the primaries.

1968 - Not old enough to vote, would have voted Humphrey (D)
1972 - McGovern (D)
1976 - Carter (D)
1980 - Carter (D)
1984 - Mondale (D)
1988 - Dukakis (D)
1992 - Clinton (D)
1996 - Clinton (D)
2000 - Gore (D)
2004 - Kerry (D)
2008 - Obama (D)
2012 - Going to vote for Obama (D)

Father (b. 1955)
My dad's been a solid Democrat, but voted Anderson in 1980 as he was disappointed with Carter and disliked Reagan. Dad's worked as a truck driver and as a manager at hardware stores. He said in hindsight, he might have voted for Carter in 1980.

1972 - Not old enough to vote, would have voted McGovern (D)
1976 - Carter (D)
1980 - Anderson (I)
1984 - Mondale (D)
1988 - Dukakis (D)
1992 - Clinton (D)
1996 - Clinton (D)
2000 - Gore (D)
2004 - Kerry (D)
2008 - Obama (D)
2012 - Going to vote for Obama (D)

Sister (b. 1983)
My sister is a solid Democrat, and works as a teacher.

2000 - Not old enough to vote, would have voted Gore (D)
2004 - Kerry (D)
2008 - Obama (D)
2012 - Going to vote for Obama (D)

Oldest Uncle (b. 1942) (father's side)
All of my uncles and aunts lean Democratic (though not enthusiastically), except this one. This uncle was a hippy-ish independent during Vietnam and the 70s (though he alluded to reluctantly voting for Nixon over Humphrey), disliked Reagan, voted for Perot twice, voted for Bush twice and became a die-hard Republican after 9/11. His political opinions have also been influenced, unfortunately, by talk radio host Rush Limbaugh. His least favorite president is Lyndon B. Johnson, and his favorite president is Theodore Roosevelt. My uncle has worked as a photographer and done various other work.

1956 - Maybe Eisenhower (R)?
1960 - Maybe Kennedy (D)?
1964 - ?
1968 - Nixon (R)
1972 - ?
1976 - ?
1980 - Anderson (I) I assume
1984 - ?
1988 - ?
1992 - Perot (I)
1996 - Perot (RF)
2000 - Bush (R)
2004 - Bush (R)
2008 - McCain (R) (his primary choice was Fred Thompson (R))
2012 - Going to vote for Romney (R) (indicated some support for Gingrich and Cain, disdain for Paul and Bachmann)

Grandfather (1909-1998) (father's side)
Grandpa was a machinist during WWII, and kept the profession most of his life. All I really know about my grandfather politically is that he liked Nixon because Nixon was brought up in a working class family. The night Nixon resigned, my father remembers grandpa coming home drunk, shaking his fist at the ceiling, yelling, "Come back Nixon, come back!" I'm told grandpa was an FDR Democrat in the 30s and 40s and probably became an Eisenhower Republican in the 50s. I don't know if he liked Reagan, but they had the same birthday, grandpa was two years to the day older. In his old age, grandpa didn't seem particularly interested in politics, but may have voted for Dole (R) in 1996. Though I am politically at odds with him, this grandfather was my favorite relative as a young child.

Grandmother (b. 1917) (father's side)
My grandmother, a housewife most of her life, has voted Democratic all her life, though she grew disappointed in the party during Clinton. Now she feels appalled at the Republicans and wants Obama to win a second term.

Grandfather (1926-2008) (mother's side)
Grandpa on my mother's side was a lifelong Republican, though he may have voted for George Wallace in 1968 and Strom Thurmond in 1948, and maybe Stevenson in 1952 due to John Sparkman being on the ticket. He criticized Bush Jr. for the execution of the Iraq War though he voted for him twice. He died in August 2008, but almost certainly would have voted for McCain. He had been a judge in Alabama and worked on the space program in the 1960s. On a visit to Alabama in 2006, he criticized me for having such long hair (it's now shorter due to haircuts and the beginnings of the effects of the dreaded male balding gene).

Grandmother (1929-1999) (mother's side)
As far as I know, my grandmother on my mother's side was a Republican. She grew up poor (as she was born at the beginning of the Great Depression) but married wealthy, and I'm not sure if she did anything for work. They married in the 1950s and divorced in the 1960s, though grandma still remained financially better off than in her youth. I remember my mom recounting an argument with grandma in the 1980s, where grandma said she was against Democrats because she didn't believe in universal health care.

Oh yes, I suppose there are family members despite my parents.

My paternal grandfather was (and is I suppose) a life-long Communist, of the left-communist orientation, so explicitly anti-revisionist and extremely anti-Moscow, anti-USSR.

My maternal grandfather was more an "establishment-moderate" type Communist, but he died a long long time ago, so there's not too much information.

My brother used to be a hardcore Democrat (straight-ticket) until he started working in the healthcare industry and Obamacare landed. Now he is a very solid Republican.

Didn't really pay attention much until 2004. I supported Kerry heavily because I was very unhappy with Bush's foreign policy. In 2008, I supported Hillary and then very reluctantly Obama (McCain/Palin was not a winning economic team). In 2012, I'm more excited about Romney than perhaps any presidential candidate in American history.

Straight Republican for my mother (1976-present) and maternal grandparents (1956-present). No idea how/if my aunt voted (1972?-2000?). I would guess that my maternal grandmother's mother (1948-1976) and father (1948-1996) voted similarly.

Straight Democrat from 1960-1968 and straight Republican from 1972 on for paternal grandmother (1960-2000) and grandfather (1960-1984).

Reagan in 1980, straight Libertarian from 1984-2004, straight Republican from 2008-present for my father. I would assume similar voting patterns for my uncle (1972-present).

I would guess that my great-grandparents voted Labour, with the exception of my maternal grandmother's parents who probably voted Conservative.

My brother voted for Kerry in 04, Obama in 08 but didn't vote this time.  He has become more conservative recently but he is appalled by how pro-war and xenophobic both parties are.  He still considers himself a Democrat though.

My mother never votes.  My uncle who passed away recently would always vote for the Democrats because they're good for business as the economy prospers under democratic administrations.  He would also say that Republicans are crooks

Mom (1984-Present): All republican, except Perot in 1992.
Dad (1984-Present): All republican
Grandma (1948-Present)(Mom): All republican
Grandpa (1948-Present)(Mom): All republican
Grandma (1960-2008)(Dad): All republican
Grandpa (1960-Present)(Dad): All republican
Sister: Hasn't voted

That's all I can tell you for sure. Exciting, I know! I do have many other family members (mostly cousins and uncles/aunts) who are liberals, so my family doesn't have this tradition of republican voting or anything. Unfortunately I don't have voting info from anybody else, so I can't fill anybody else in, otherwise I would.

Mother: I think she was apathetic for awhile, she told me that the first political race she was interested in was the 1990 NC Senate race between Jesse Helms and Harvey Gantt.  I don't think she's ever voted Republican, and has been voting in Presidential elections since the 1990s.

Father:  I know he voted Democrat 2000-2012; before that, I don't know.

Grandmother (maternal): Voting since 1956, only voted Republican in 1972.  May have voted for Wallace in '68, I don't know.  She voted Democrat in every other election.

Grandmother (paternal): Only Republican she voted for was Eisenhower; Democrat in every election since then, I think.

Grandfather (paternal): I don't know.  He may have voted for a Dem back in the '60s but he has been very conservative at least since the '70s.  He has voted straight Republican since then.

Father:

2004- Bush (a vote which he regrets)
2008- Obama (a vote which he also now regrets lol)
2012- Stein (write-in), and voted for Kerrey in the Senate race

Mother:

2008- Obama

My parents, who are immigrants from Guatemala, received their citizenship in 2002. My father is considerably more politically involved than my mother, whose political tendencies tend to be a mesh of apathy, cynicism, and anger towards the corporate establishment. My father voted for Bush in 2004 purely on his immigration stance. Nowadays, my father subscribes to a sort of left-wing socially-conservative populism and is currently disillusioned with both Obama and the Republicans.

I have no idea what some of other family members living here in America have voted for. But I assume that one of my cousins (your run-of-the-mill liberal), voted for Obama in 2008 and 2012.

(Edited after research)
My Parents, Canadians, have been ex-Pats since the 1980s, and have more or less refused to share their voting history. They have not voted since 1988

My Father, a Liberal leaning NDPer in his youth
1986: Out of Country, there after
1984 Fed: NDP, Ed Broadbent
1983 BC: BC NDP, Dave Barrett
1980 Fed: Liberal, Pierre Trudeau
1979 Fed: NDP, Ed Broadbent, Dave Barrett
1975 BC:BC NDP, Dave Barrett
1974 Fed: Liberal, Pierre Trudeau

My Mother, a Liberal from a Liberal family
1988 Fed: Liberal, John Turner
1986 Prov. Liberal, Art Lee or possibly Social Credit, Bill Vander Zalm (I hope not)
1984 Fed, Prov: Liberal, John Turner
1983 Prov: Social Credit, Bill Bennett (I'm guessing, she was anti-NDP and hardly anyone voted Liberal that year)

They'd both be Democrats if they were US Citizens

Fathers Family
- Father's Mother: Voted BC Liberal 2013, I'm fairly certain.  Otherwise at minimum anti-Harper
- Father's uncle: Old Montreal Anglo Corporate Exec. Is now and probably has been solidly LPC and PLQ Liberal since he moved their in the 1950s
- Father's Sister and Younger Brother - both unionized, NDP voters, though the Uncle's wife is a known Conservative
- Family heritage: Historically NDP/CCF community in BC for many years. Anglo-Protestant Heritage, make likely Tories before depression

Mother's Family
-Mother's Mother - solid Federal Liberal  really liked Pierre Trudeau. Never got over the NDP government in the 1990s, and seemed to be BC Liberal there after 2001 until she passed away in 2012
-Mother's Father - Solid Federal Liberal, personally disliked Jean Chretien, [called him 'Cretin']  but might have voted that way anyway
-Mother's Mother's Family: Prairie Norwegians.  probably Liberal/Progressive before the depression, definitely CCF/NDP until 1993, Reform/Conservative thereafter
-Mother's Mother's Brother: Family Friend of the Mannings, so probably Alberta Social Credit back in the day, and was asked to be Reform Candidate in the 1990s by Preston Manning
Mother's Father's Family - Land owning Anglo-protestants, but Liberals, this being BC where politics has always been an economic and not a social question
-Some of Mother's sisters, known BC Liberals

Some of my family were.  I had one great-grandfather who was a democrat. But the rest had pretty much moved to voting Republican by Eisenhower.  I don't know much further back than that, but I assume it's a safe to assume at least some of my relatives were in the almost 99% that voted for FDR.

I'll have to look up more details, but I know that from my grandpa (born 1930) to my dad (born 1956) to me, no one has voted for a Democrat.  I have, however, always seemed to be for the most liberal Republican in the primaries.

My father doesn't vote and doesn't seem to think too highly of either of the major parties, and probably views the Greens as being naive. I hadn't thought about this until now, but it's probably because he grew up in a country where there was only one political party and they controlled everything. He's pretty cynical.

My mother has voted Labor and Liberal (I honestly have no idea why, because she's a nurse and a union member). She voted for the Greens in this year's Western Australian Senate election because she was disillusioned with both the major parties but liked the Greens Senator Scott Ludlam.

My step-mother probably votes Labor, because she's a nurse and a union member. Last night she was criticizing the state Minister for Health for incompetence, saying that he should be sacked.

As for me, I first voted for Labor last year in the elections and then voted Labor again in this year's elections. I'm hoping to persuade my sister, who is coming of age, to vote either Labor or Greens. I'm getting quite a bit of help though from maniacs like Troy Buswell and Tony Abbott.

My dad was a Republican as far as I know. Only primary vote I know him to have cast is for Romney in '08. Little idea of his voting record pre-'08 but for my family's support for Bush (in '04) and his prioritization of right-to-life candidates. My mom has said that she may have voted for Clinton twice. Voted for Romney in probably both primaries, Republican in the general. Can't give you much more than that.

Its funny I read thru all these posts of how Mom and Dads voted in the past. I see all the 1980 Carter, 1984 Mondale, 1988 Dukakis, 1996 Dole votes, then realizing how badly they lost (particularly Mondale) with all these confirmed votes. I know this obviously is non scientific but its kinda funny none the less

Recent ones I knew for both of them. Dad I asked a few years back, some of them he wasn't sure, others I'm not sure IIRC.

Dad
68- Humphrey
72- Nixon
76- Ford?
80- Carter?
84- Reagan
88- Bush?
92- Clinton..
96- Clinton
00- Gore
04 Bush
08- Obama
12 Obama

Mom, 72-88  really have no clue, proably a bit of a mix
92 Perot..
96 Clinton
00 Gore
04 Bush
08 Obama
12 Obama

In 92 I know one voted for Clinon the other for Perot, I think it was my dad for Clinton and Mom for Perot, but not certain.  Mom was actually a registered Republican in NY, but never knew how and considered herself an Independent, and was more apoltical.  Dad was registered Democrat, wasn't really aware of it either, considered himself an Independent but leaned slightly more Democratic.

My parents moved to S.C in 2009 (right outside of Charlotte) which doesn't have registration by PArty, but now are both pretty much solid Democrats.

My Dad:
1992 Clinton
2000 Bush
2004 Bush
2008 McCain
2012 Romney

By the time the primaries get to Kentucky they are irrelevant, my dad always chose the presumptive nominee.

My Mom:
1992 Clinton (almost voted Perot)
2000 Bush
2004 Nader
2008 McCain
2012 Romney

Independents can't vote in Kentucky primaries.

My grandmother voted GOP until Obama, as she thought her social security would be cut.

My great grandmother was born in 1912 voted GOP every election.  She couldn't vote in Presidential elections until 1964 (lived in DC), and voted GOP until at least the '90s.  She also had met Alf Landon on multiple occasions.

My mother's side is mostly Democratic.

Traditionally, we were a Republican family, but we were from the old Rockefeller Republican breeding.  Starting in the 90s, our family has veered more towards the Democratic Party.

My dad has always voted libertarian, no exception, since 1984 when he could first vote. My mom was exclusive republican since 1992 when she could up until 2016 when she voted for Sanders as a write in. She said that in 2020, if the democrats nominate somebody like Booker, she would vote for them, if not she would stay home.

I voted for Johnson in 2016, although with hindsight I would vote Trump, not because I get like a giant hard on for his presidency, but because I am so tired of the wasted vote mentality and I would never vote for Hillary, so he would be my default choice on a repeat 2016 case.

In 2012, there was a mock election in my history eighth grade class. I was the only person in my class who voted for Romney. Needless to say I was the only out republican in my senior year of high school

My sister:
2016 (her first and only Presidential election so far)-Clinton

My mom:
2016-Clinton
2012-Obama
2008-Obama
2004-Kerry
2000-Gore
I'm not sure how she voted in prior elections, most likely for the Democrat.

My dad:
2016-Trump (due to his idiotic notion that his business was more successful during the last Republican President)
2012-Obama, I think?
2008-Obama
I'm not sure how he voted in previous elections.

My grandma:
2016-Trump
2012-Romney
2008-McCain
2004-Bush
2000-Bush
Every previous election dating back to her first one was for the Democrat. I know that for a fact. She made a massive 180 in 2000 upon meeting her new boyfriend and becoming brainwashed as Fox News became all that they watched on television. It really was baffling how much she changed. She used to be a Democratic council member in my town and started mandatory recycling pickup and other environmental reforms. She was also a member of the League of Women Voters. Hell, she banned elephant imagery from the household, she was that much of a hardcore Democrat. She uses the excuse of "the party left me" but that is just not true when you go from pretty much being an eco-feminist to a Tea Party Trump cultist. She sold out for the sake of her relationship with her new boyfriend, it's as simple as that.

I went off a little there, my apologies. It was a bit cathartic, honestly.

My grandparents on both sides of the family (or at least the ones who voted) voted Republican their entire lives, including 1964. My great-grandparents through my father's mother voted Republican, including 1932 and 1936, and their ancestors mostly voted Republican or Whig in every election back to the 1820s. Through my mother's mother, my ancestors were Irish Catholics, so they were definitely voting for Democrats. My mother's father's parents were non-citizens, and my father's father's ancestors were Pennsylvania Germans who probably didn't vote.

Not sure for before 2004. My dad voted pretty enthusiastically for Obama both times, however in 2016 was definitely lukewarm at best at voting for Clinton (he never would have voted for Trump.) My mom is not really political - she only voted for Kerry in 2004 because he was the Senator from our state. She actually supported Romney for governor in 2002 and supported him over Obama in 2012, although she didn't vote. Didn't feel like voting mattered but voted in 2016 for Hillary (likes her more than my dad does) in order to stop Trump.

Not sure before '88:

Mom:
1988: George H. W. Bush (R)
1992: Bill Clinton (D)
1996: Bill Clinton (D)
2000: Al Gore (D)
2004: John Kerry (D)
2008: Barack Obama (D), inc. Obama in the Democratic primary
2012: Barack Obama (D)
2016: Hillary Clinton (D), inc. Clinton in the Democratic primary

Dad: exactly the same, except he voted for Sanders in the Democratic primary

I'm pretty sure they were somewhat open to split-ticketing in the '80s and '90s, but post-2000 or so they have both been pretty strictly Democratic downballot, barring a couple minor exceptions (ex. I think my mom voted for Ruth Johnson for Michigan Secretary of State in 2010). They seem to become more liberal with every day that passes under the Trump administration.

Paternal grandparents: Not really worth speculating. They are/were anti-gun, ant-free trade Republicans (who supported Bill Clinton in 1996) later in life, unsure prior to 1980. They're literally of Italian and Greek descent and 3rd and 2nd generation immigrants who lived most of their life in Brooklyn, NY. Their younger relatives who still are alive are wealthy white educated voters and many of whom still live in New York, so they are Democrats.

My mother (1988-present), paternal grandmother, and maternal grandmother (both 1968-present) have voted Dems their entire political lives.

My dad is an Independent voter with a Republican streak, he voted Bush 41-Clinton-Clinton-Bush 43-Bush 43-Obama-Romney-Colin Powell write-in

I dunno how my Ma voted, and she's in no condition to answer if asked. I can only confirm that she didn't vote in 2016 and these last primaries.

My grandma, as you'd expect for an Arizona Mormon, is a lifelong Republican, whom I suspect even went for Goldwater. I only know for sure of her votes for Bush Jr, McCain, Romney, and Trump.

My other grandparents all died before I became of that age.

My Dad (1972-Present) has voted straight D since McGovern...and I know he didn't like Jerry Brown in '92.

My Sis is also a Democrat, she was more enthused about Hillary than I was.

My late mother, before she passed in 2009, was according to my maternal uncle, a staunch Democrat. I remember her strong support for Barack Obama back in 2008; in fact, I was the one who dropped in her ballot at the DMV, a few months or so before the election. I don't know of her voting record before that, but I would assume that she voted straight Democratic in every presidential election that she could vote in (appx. 1980-2008).

My father seems to be a right-leaning independent, and I have heard rumors from someone in my family that he was a Republican at one point. I'm not exactly sure of that, and I know nothing of his voting record before 2012. In 2012, he did vote for Obama, but very reluctantly, and only because my stepmother begged him to. In 2016, however, he voted pretty enthusiastically for Donald Trump, and for some reason continues to support him.

My stepmother is a legal permanent resident from Jamaica, and as such, she cannot vote. However, she is a pretty staunch Democrat, ideologically speaking, absolutely loathes Trump, and wants to get her citizenship sorted out by 2020 so that she can vote against him. If she had been able to vote, she would have gone for Obama in 2012 and Clinton in 2016.

My maternal uncle is a pretty staunch Democrat as well. He never voted prior to 2008, but Obama's candidacy got him more interested. He voted for Obama twice, and for Clinton in 2016. My maternal aunt has no interest in politics whatsoever, and according to my uncle, has never cast a ballot in her life.

My paternal uncle and paternal step-aunt are both staunch Democrats as well, particularly the latter; I remember seeing a photograph of the Obamas and Democratic Party fliers that she had at their house. I don't know about my cousins, but they are generally liberal, and probably vote Democratic.

As for me, I am a definite independent. As I've stated before, I went for Evan McMullin in 2016, and will probably vote third-party again in 2020 unless if the Democratic candidate earns my vote. I've voted for Republicans, Democrats, and independents, for state and local races. In 2016, besides McMullin for President, I voted for Democrat Michael Bennet for Senate, Republicans for the state legislature and State Board of Education, and Libertarian Mike McRedmond for the House of Representatives. This year, I plan on voting for Republicans for state and local races in El Paso County, and Democrats for Governor and the U.S. House. I am currently a tossup on the other statewide races.

What state are you from?

Oregon

My parents are a very common types of voters that are underrepresented on Atlas: moderate (Republican) voters with a wide range of views who will pretty much always vote for whomever the Republicans nominate.

My grandparents on my dad's side owned an insurance company and have been straight ticket Republican their entire voting lives (~1956 and on?), to my knowledge.

My grandpa on my mom's side was a true swing voter who wasn't very political at all.  He would vote based on national mood and the candidate's personalities, not so much because he wasn't knowledgeable or anything but more because I don't think he trusted any politician and thought that was just as smart of a way of picking as a party label or specific policy stances.  My mom's mom was a very partisan Democrat (of the New Deal variety) up until Obama.  I think she has gotten noticeably more racist since then, and while her vote for McCain was almost certainly partly due to race, I honestly think she felt that Obama looked down on people like her (non-college educated, lives in Kewanee, IL, grew up in a very working class family, etc.).  I think she abstained in 2012, as "her vote doesn't even count in Illinois anyway."  She definitely supported Trump, but she calls him a moron quite a bit.  I think she will probably stay home in 2020.

My sister's first election she could vote in was 2014, and she voted straight ticket Republican in Iowa.  In 2016, she voted Republican for all downballot offices and for Clinton for President, this time in Indiana.

Dad (this is interesting):
before 1984: Unknown, but I think he was pro-Nixon
1984: Reagan
1988: Unknown
1992: Perot
1996: Perot
2000: Gore
2004: Kerry
2008: No vote, hated both candidates but preferred McCain winning (Clinton in the primaries)
2012: No vote, hated both candidates but preferred Romney winning (Gingrich in the primaries)
2016: Trump

Mom (not very political):
Before 2000: Unknown
2000: Gore
2004: Kerry
2008: No vote
2012: No vote
2016: No vote

My dad's side of the family are German Texan southern Baptists (formerly Lutheran or Catholic) and have voted exclusively Republican since the 1930's. Not for ethnic reasons, but because they were wealthy. My dad is the only Independent. The only thing you can tell from the way he votes is that he votes against perceived candidates of elites... or he's a conservative who really hated the Bush family.

My mom's side of the family were from the SW Pennsylvania coal area, probably mostly of Scots-Irish descent, and have probably voted Democrat since FDR for civil liberties and active government. They were probably Republicans before then. Only one of my mother's 3 siblings voted for Trump.

My Dad’s parents have been Republicans since the 70’s, (unusual for around here) though most of their siblings are or were until recently yellow dog dems.
In my part of Alabama there was an interesting dynamic where the older folks were much more democratic than the younger generations, but most of them have died off or switched allegiances now. My county was 87% Trump.

Also, here is how I would summarize each of their views:

Dad- An odd mix of views.  He's overall pretty Trumpist, but he was a medical malpractice lawyer for a while so he would vote Democratic out of fear of tort reform.  He's generally pretty conservative, but is more liberal on stuff like guns.

Mom- A former small-government Republican who became disenchanted with conservatism in the early 2000s and has steadily grown more liberal.  She's a women's march style liberal at this point, as her social views have become more and more extreme.

Dad's Dad- He grew up in a poor coal-mining town in Northeast Pennsylvania but eventually became a very successful lawyer, so his politics reflect different backgrounds.  He's a Catholic ancestral Democrat, but very socially conservative, so he drifted more Republican.

Dad's Mom- Basically the same as her husband, but she seems to have become Republican a little earlier (probably due to not having the preoccupation with tort reform as much)

Mom's Dad- He was a small business owner and a staunch anti-tax Republican from exurban North Carolina who was active in a Baptist church.

Mom's Mom- I find her politics interesting because I don't know many like her.  She is extremely active in her Baptist church (albeit it is less fundamentalist than many Baptist churches) and is probably quite socially conservative on a personal level, but has been a loyal Democrat (including being pro-choice as a matter of policy).  She seems to have some level of discomfort with the far-left wing of the Democratic Party (i.e. she didn't understand why my mom wouldn't like a t-shirt with the American flag saying "if this offends you, I'll help you pack") and would say that she doesn't agree with homosexuality, but she is extremely anti-Trump and still a loyal Democrat.

Does anyone here have “Never Goldwater” Republicans in their family?

Great-grandfather: Reagan and Colin Powell fan, non-voter (permanent resident). Catholic. Possible bisexual. Strongly believed in racial and gender equality.

Great-grandmother: Permanent resident. Mildly homophobic and sexist (against women) but liberal on racial issues. She didn't believe allegations against Michael Jackson and said either OJ didn't do it or he had cause.

Grandmother: Permanent resident. Prefers Trump to Biden but doesn't GAF about Trump. Anti-vax (including against the flu shot) but strongly pro-mask. She hates Biden with a passion. Mildly homophobic with some racist and sizeist tendencies. She is anti-welfare but received help in the past to my knowledge. Supports "Bono for President." Her favorite President was JFK. Catholic. Resistant to become a citizen or to get the vaccine although she suggested both were possibilities a while ago but that seems to have changed.

Dad: Sexist, mildly racist and homophobic. Believes depression/suicide is a matter of people just needing to toughen up. Non-voter. Thinks Bernie is OK. Hillary fan and loves Biden and hates Trump although he doesn't like Obama. He seemed to have opposed Roy Cooper before coming around to him. He peddles in conspiracy theories pretty often. I have elaborated on here before. He's also seemingly pro-choice and religiously ambivalent. He got two shots but no third yet. He believes that U.S. elections are broadly secure (anti-#StopTheSteal).

Mom: Voter since 2016. Non-voter before. Rabidly pro-trans and pro-LGBT. Less progressive on race/gender but still moderately so. Bernie-Bernie Democratic straight-ticket voter who typically favors progressives. Pro-life and pro-death penalty. Open to some conservative social rhetoric but seemingly unwilling to vote GOP except for unopposed offices. Mildly opposed to Trump. Reluctant Biden voter in 2020. Catholic who loves Pope Francis. She has received 4 COVID shots. Her favorite President is LBJ. 90% committed to Williamson in 2024.

Brother 1: Able to vote in 2024. Resistant to vote and doesn't have a significant interest to vote although I am urging both of my brothers to do so. To-be Democrat. He is pro-choice, anti-UBI, anti-PC culture. He likes Obama, seems to like Bernie, and likes Biden. Lincoln is his favorite President and he holds Obama in very high esteem. No opinion on Hillary to my knowledge. He asked me who I thought he should vote for next year and I said "Biden, probably" not as an endorsement but as what made more sense for him. He is Catholic but likes Buddhism as an idea and is open to the idea of reincarnation. I suspect he may convert later on. He has received 2 COVID shots. Says he would vote for Biden in a Biden/Williamson race.

Brother 2: Able to vote in '26. Democratic leaner with a strong conservative streak socially. Likes Bernie and said he would have voted for Trump & Tillis in '20 if he was eligible. Pro-life & Catholic. He has received 2 COVID shots. His favorite President is LBJ.

Uncle 1: Republican. Likely Trump supporter as he only registered in '16 (after the primaries) although he could vote in previous years. He only votes in presidential years in general elections (2016 & 2020 to date). Anti-vax and anti-mask.

Uncle 2: Non-voter. Previously said voting was a waste of time but has expressed interest in voting recently. Opposed Hillary and supported Bernie in the past. Catholic. He doesn't like Trump and seems significantly to the left of his brother and mother. He wears a mask regularly outside and used to glove up in public during COVID (DK if that ended). He has received 2 shots but is resistant to get any more.

For everyone else, I don't know. Many members of my dad's family, however, are mildly racist, colorist, homophobic, and sexist. It's not a slight but just true. Of course, I don't hold political views against anyone, especially family.

None vote for democratic or liberal parties and that's all you need to know.

My family are pretty staunch Democrats for the most part, particularly on my dad's side. My paternal grandparents were Eisenhower supporters but that's about the extent of it. My granddad voted for Nixon in 1960, apparently leading to some jokes from the rest of the family after Watergate about him being a "Nixon supporter." But I think regular Dem voters ever since. Though my dad has sometimes voted Republican in local elections when he personally knows the candidate, the highest office he can remember voting R for was for Governor in 1985, when he voted for Tom Kean. He has voted Dem for president in every election he's been old enough to vote in.

My mom's family is somewhat the same but I don't know their politics quite as well. My mom registered as an independent and recalled voting for Reagan in 1984, but basically was a reliably Democratic voter afterward. The last election before she died was 2012 and she voted for Obama. My maternal grandfather died decades ago. My maternal grandmother is a Democrat, although her politics are pretty centrist I think. My uncle on this side of the family is mostly a non-voter with some conservative leanings. But his wife and son (my aunt and cousin) are rank-and-file Democrats.

Mostly democrat but my Grandfather (from Rural Mississippi and generally thought politicans were insincere crooks) said that in 1960 he went with Nixon because he believed that a rich man shouldn't be President.
