Zardari. Far from the worst on the list, but mostly to save Ortega (seriously why are people voting for him over some of these? He's even democratically elected!)

Thaci is the main one I want taken out though.

What's the deal with Hans Adam.  The wiki on him doesn't seem THAT bad.  A power hungry dick maybe, but he's not killing monks or anything.

I notice this list has fewer really bad guys than the other lists (and it's not like the guy I voted for is in the running for Hitler 2 or anything).

Well, it's probably better right now than at any other time since the coup against Lumumba (not that that was a hard), if not since Henry Stanley came. And yes, Kabila jr must take some of the responsibility for that.

Sure, Congo has been a hell-hole for several periods. My point was not in comparison to previous incarnations of Congo but to other countries in the world. I believe it tends to rank very close to the bottom on most lists of things that are good for a society. And from what I've seen and heard of Kabila, not the greatest leader (though granted, not the worse either).

Besides, not to be colonialist, but wasn't there a somewhat decent period after the Belgians stopped being utter monsters to the blacks and uptill war broke out after WWII? I get that it probably wasn't paradise to the non-whites there, but I have the impression that it was all-right if you compare it to other places in Africa and so on. But I will grant that I haven't studied its history in-depth.

If your point is that King Leopold of Belgium back in the day out-ranks a lot of present-day dictators in horribleness, yeah, I agree. I did boycott the "Congo Museum" when I was in Brussels as a protest against their treatment of the people there.

Why Erdogan of all people? He's at least democratically elected and a leader of a half-decent country. There are plenty of dictators still on the list, though I'm having trouble making up my mind which one to vote for...

The one good thing about Turkey was that it was a secular country. Erdogan is trying is very hard to destroy exactly this thing.

Not sure about that, actually. May be true. Not really my point, anyhow - I just threw "Stanley" in as an afterthought.

Yes, Congo is poor and lawless. Sure. If you want to protest that, boycott mobile phones (whose mass breakthrough wouldn't have been possible without the late 90s and early 2000s warfare there. And is what fuelled, and paid for, that war.) Don't vote off an ex-dictator who brought the first free, and more or less fair, elections ever to the place.
At least half the people on here belonged off before him.

[/end rant]

There's a "leader" in Somalia? News to me. Off he goes!

I'm not an expert of Turkey, but it seems the guy isn't only in charge of Istanbul, but of the whole Turkey, so of the whole Anatolia, which seems deeply Muslim conservatist, and personally I think he tends to very well manage all the influences throughout his country while in the same time he developed the economy, I'll personally better rank him as a good leader.

I think Ahmed is an Islamist, might be wrong. I think the TFG allied with some less kooky Islamists.

Yeah, I think he's a moderate islamist. Which, realistically, is the best one can hope for in Somalia short-term.

Why are you voting the Somali guy? He came to power in January and is attempting (somewhat successfully) to retake control of a lawless country. He does want to impose national sharia, but that is what originally kept the pirates at bay, so...

Hun Sen.

The Somali guy is being targeted because he doesn't actually run his country anyway. Plus he was originally from that very nasty Islamic Courts Union, which executed people for watching the World Cup, among other things.

The more-or-less accidental head bureaucrat of a peaceful, lovely, egalitarian but utterly unfree country is on his deserved (if perhaps a couple rounds early) way out already without my help, so I'm free to just throw names out there, right?

Yoweri Museveni (Gnassingbé already has people going after him. The Mauritanian is next on my hitlist after them. Then that Bosnian figurehead, simply on the grounds of being a figurehead.)

Sexual abuse of minor daughter clinches this one for Ortega. Sen and Museveni seem bad but not extra-ordinarily bad.

I also don't like Ortega's pretend Catholicism and pro-life position in order to win elections. BRTD will be ok with it since it's a cool Latin American Commie of course.

I beg to differ. Museveni was elected with 59% of the vote in the 2006 elections. The Supreme Court voted 4-3 for upholding the result. So, Museveni recieved a substantially larger share of the vote than Ortega did. Granted, the election was probably not entirely free. On the other hand, similiar allegiations seem to have been made against Ortega.

Sure, Ortega still wins on democraticness, but that isn't everything.

See the organization thread for this. Those from last round with the least votes, but with votes greater than 0 are immune.

Er, no. WAY off. It's those with the highest total amount of votes from the previous rounds who have still not been eliminated.

Whoa, someone needs to chill...

And his name is spelled wrongly - it should be either Špirić or Shpirich.

Or you can understand that using a basic Australian keyboard and knowledge of slavic pronunciations, 'Spiric' is pronounced as 'Shpirich' :)

(my boyfriend (?) is the Serbian 'Nedeljkovic' :))

No, when transliterating Slavic languages it's incorrect to use s for š, because there is a phoneme s. You are confusing it with Hungarian.

While I know you are a Slavic expert in forum terms, I can assure you that the Australian standard is as I stated (and also that Nedeljkovic is a Serbian surname, even if it doesn't make the list on wikipedia :) Here is the Cyrillic version of a famous person with the same surname: Силвија Недељковић)

Sali Berisha, I guess. This will be the first one where we need to sacrifice OK-to-good leaders.
In my world, Berisha was such a bad leader, he got overthrown in an armed revolution. How did he do in your world?

Berisha is more pathetic than evil and insidious. His country got so deep in pyramid schemes that after they all collapsed there was a massive rebellion against his group. And the rebels basically won too and ousted his government. They needed UN peacekeepers to come in. Which is even more pathetic considering they weren't a unified group and had no real goal. That's the equivalent of some city's mayor and municipal government getting ousted by a bunch of drunk rioting college kids or sports fans or whatever and requiring the national guard to restore order.

Somehow, I don't think that a former Suharto supporter, who abandoned him only when he was on the verge of losing power and who served in East Timor, even if he hasn't been accused of war crimes, is a good choice for Indonesian leader

well hes never been charged with war crimes.

Simply serving in the Indonesian military in East Timor itself makes one a war criminal.

I wouldn't go as far as this. But even if he hadn't carried out any crimes himself, he was almost certainly aware of crimes carried out by others and he did nothing to stop them, making him nearly as bad as if he were a war criminal.

But I guess he's better than Harper...
