That's a tie between Saudi Arabia and Burma, two awful regimes.

Saudi Arabia isn't a problem of leader, by now it's more likely a problem of regime, seems that kings are more or less interchangeable there. The regime is awful for his moral rules and his new kind of slavery toward immigrant poor workers.

But, on the other hand, in Burma we're speaking about a guy who has let the people without an help after a big hurricane, and who still don't care at all about what happening to the whole population and breaks every claim by an iron fist.

It seems the worst, I mean the death, would be more common in Burma than in Saudi Arabia. A least for the few I know.

So I would vote for Than Shwe

I don't know why there was a jihad against the Saudi guy above for awhile. Given the lay of the land over there, he is a fairly decent guy it seems to me. He does not rule folks who share my values on many key points.

With Kim Jong-il, Than Shwe and Omar al-Bashir gone, Afewerki is probably the worst dictator of the remaining leaders even if nowhere near as well known. Gaddafi is pretty awful too of course, but better to get the ball rolling on Afewerki.

Isaias Afewerki

But everything as bad - quite probably worse.

Though he does get extenuating circumstances given the past history of Eritrea and his own personal history, I suppose.

Have you looked into their wonderful laws regarding..well everything? They are more f'ed up than the Iranians, something you wouldn't be able to discern based on US foreign policy.

I vote Isaias Afewerki for this round.

Why do people vote for the Tunisian guy? (Zine, etc, Ben Ali). Like the other Maghreb countries Tunisia seems fairly well-managed. The Wikipedia-article seems a fair bit slanted, but if the facts are true we're talking about the most economically free, least islamist and most gender-equal arab country in the world. While the wiki-article tries to cover it, it seems like a dictatorship, but not a totalitarian one.

Yemen on the other hand is a nasty, back-wards little country where girls can marry at the age of nine.

Ethiopia seems worse though. There's a guy who looks like the devil and stands accused of genocide.

I vote for Meles Zenawi this time.

Banning headscarves (in parts of the country) does not make rights for women... quite the opposite, in fact.

You're right that Ethiopia is worse.

Tunisia's censorship, especially internet, is some of the worst in the world.

Still Ben Ali.

And Gustaf, didn't you vote for Ortega earlier? It's a little ridiculous to vote out a democratic leader, yet argue various dictators shouldn't be voted out yet because they're not as bad as other dictators.

If there's a logic in that post, I'm not finding it. We can only vote out one person per round and group. There are several dictators not voted out every time, so arguing that one dictator should be retained in favour of voting out another is not "ridiculous." You are doing the exact same thing yourself right here, arguing that Saleh is better than Ben Ali.

If your point is that all dictators should be voted off before all democratic leaders, lol. Just in case people can't figure out on their own what a hypocrite you are:

From last time around:

Democratically elected PM of Denmark. Leaders of Tanzania, Lesotho, Zambia, Burundi, Niger, Mali and Senegal among those still on the list.

Junichiro Koizumi

Come on LVB (Leftist Voting Bloc)! Revenge for Schroeder!

Democratically elected leader of Japan. Again, large number of dictators left. These were just my first two hits, though.

So I had to dig up this little gem:

Guess who was still on the list at that time? Yeah, that's right: dear old Ben Ali of Tunisia. As well as a ton of other dictators.

So don't give me that crap. I explained my reasoning in voting for Ortega in that thread anyway.

The old stupid thought about a now democratic country.

Croatia is a country which, despite tons of pandering and support from the west for who knows what reason, has refused to arrest any of its war criminals, and pretty much turned a blind eye to all of them, also doing nothing about the Ustase lovers so prevalent in its society. Look at how long Ante Gotovina was free. And since then it continues to hold up its Ustase lovers as national heroes.

Serbia is a country continued to be demonized and oppressed by the West, despite it being the country to topple and arrest Milosevic, arrested Radovan Karadzic, and continues to hunt for Mladic.

Granted Kosovo is the worst of them all, it has done more than just ignore its war criminals, it elected one PM. But he's already gone, so moot point.

Lol.

1. I guess you've never been to Croatia. I have. It's not a fascist nation.
2. You obviously have no idea what Serbia is like. Which is strange, since even someone not living in Europe should be able to see the facts for themselves in that case. Serbia remains stubbornly fascist, in spite of all that has happened.

That's not to say that Sanader is a great leader or anything. He seems more opportunist than fascist though.

What definition of fascist are you using, Gustaf?
1. Serbia is rated as a free nation by the Freedom in the world
2. Serbia has handed over almost all war criminals requested by the Hague court
3. Serbia has held multiple free elections since 2000, and the last one was won by a pro-European party.
Have you been in Serbia or are you just repeating the anti-Serbian propaganda, with which Western Europe was fed for so many years?

I'm looking at the basic structure of Serbian politics. The word "fascist" was used a little tounge-in-cheek, but it is fascist in the same sense as, say, China, Pakistan or Russia. They retain archaic nationalist ideals and dream of empire-building.

Granted, I had forgotten about Tadic's razor-thin victory which was a positive sign. Still, the mainstream in Serbia seems decidedly, well...I think fascist is somewhat hyperbolic but still not entirely inappropriate. Croatia certainly seems to have moved on better than Serbia has from a fascist past.

As for your points, yeah, I know Serbia is not totalitarian. That wasn't really my point either. And handing over war-criminals took a war and an over-throwing of the government to bring about. The biggest party in Serbia remains, I believe, Seselj's Radical Party which is based, according to their own leader on: "Serbian nationalism, antiglobalism and Russophilia"

Anyways, nobody still told me why Yushchenko is so hated here.

Group Five is close this round, and clearly the choice is between Stanishev and King this round, so I'll change my vote to:

Good that the forum trusts my knowledge on Eastern Europe! I wonder, however, how many of those rightists who voted for him, would have done so if they knew he had been following ultra-liberal (in the European sense) politics ;)

Don't worry, I didn't vote for him, based on your knowledge...
Unfortunately, due to the leftist bias of this forum, we must choose among what is left in each group and what is likely to fail or to succeed...
So, it's not very simple for the rightists...

Oh, nothing terrible. I'm not even sure I'd vote for him next round. Wade or Aso (nevermind Merz)  might be more worthy targets.
I don't trust bankers-turned-third world politicians. These are the people in charge of the corruption that plagues aid receiving nations (I have Johnson-Sirleaf on my hitlist too, but she's in a weaker group). And I'm mystified how come he was supported by both Kérékou and Soglo in the runoff. But I was mostly annulling Ernest's just as tactical vote, seeing how King's elimination is decided already.

Looks like he was suspected in the killing of a political rival, the charges were dismissed, but still suspicious.
