Title: Fast Food Chains You Desire
Post by: DownWithTheLeft on July 23, 2009, 03:22:37 PM
I have been clamoring to get an In and Out Burger, although there plans do not seem to include westward expansion.  I should be thankful that Sonic has finally arrived to my area and a Five Guys has gone close and I have realized its goodness.

Are there any fast food chains that you really want to come to your area?

Jack in the Box and Whataburger. My life would be complete if they opened those here. Maybe Taco Bueno...but I have to be in the right mood to have that.

We only have KFC, as in most other medium sized Thai towns.  Two in fact.  The nearest McDonalds is an hour away.  I wouldn't mind a Burger King..

I wish A&W would come back.. there are a few new ones around.. but not here :(

Really?

Your nearest Sonic is about 30 miles away from SF
The best Mexican restaurant, Qdoba, seems similar
You definitley lack a Pollo Tropical.  I think its more of a lack of knowledge of some because

And no Five Guys within 100 miles!!!

frankly I felt much better not knowing about In and Out Burger

Qdoba just opened up with a new Burger King here.. and while it is okay, it certainly is not the best Mexican food.  Maybe for fast food... but it is by no means authentic.  It's Burger King's response to Chipotle.

Also, In and Out is good, but I prefer Culvers.  Their burgers are just as good and they have custard, among many other things.

Yea, I meant fast Mexican food with Qdobs.

Anyway, since you mentioned custard, PiT also has no Ritas anywhere near him for thousands of miles

^^^^×1000

In-N-Out is logistically impossible in New Jersey, because of the freshness requirements. Have you ever eaten at one?

Wow, you wanna give money to those freaks? Tsk tsk, shame on you Meeker... how fitting that they only have one location in the NW...too bad it's at my school...

I've heard Chick-fil-A is very religious.  I had never heard of them until my step dad mentioned them being all over in the south.

We also don't have Jack in the Box... although we have Hardees, which is essentially the same thing as Carls Jr.

I don't really care what it is the ownership believes. In my pre-vegetarian days, I loved Chick-fil-a, because it was good.

Well, MORE Arby's.  I can't believe how few there are in Pittsburgh and surrounding suburbs (sorry BRTD).

We have a couple Chick-fil-A's around but only a couple, I'd like more.

I'm not a fast food junkie but Arby's is the best, followed by McD's.

I prefer ethnic - Vietnamese, Indian, Thai.

Jack in the Box and Krystal are both just close enough to torment me with commercials (from the upstate and Augusta TV markets respectively) while not close enough to eat at.

I've heard Chick-fil-A is very religious.  I had never heard of them until my step dad mentioned them being all over in the south.

Very religious is an understatement.  By company policy, all Chick-fil-A's are closed on Sunday.

We also don't have Jack in the Box... although we have Hardees, which is essentially the same thing as Carls Jr.

Hardly surprising since the same company owns both Carl's Jr. and Hardee's.

Not only is the no-Sunday thing really dumb anyway, it's also really annoying because I don't really crave Chick-Fil-A all that often, and invariably it's a Sunday when I finally do.

I prefer ethnic - Vietnamese, Indian, Thai.

Definitely. I dislike most fast food chains. When it is desirable to eat some quickly and cheap, there usually are local places (or smaller chains) where the food is signifiicantly better and healthier yet not much more expensive.

Very true. I can eat Thai near my house for $7. It really doesn't make much sense to head to the burger king and pay the same price for something that'll make you a fat.

Desire is an awfully strong word used to describe American culinary mediocrity.  (Wow, I sound like Opebo.)

But seriously guys -- I am a fat and I love a good burger.  But fast food?  If I absolutely have to, because I am on the road and pressed for time, Burger King.  Most of the rest just tastes like ass.  The Wendy's spicy chicken sandwich approaches being tolerable.

There is a chain here called "Rally's" but I think, in other parts of the country, it is called something else.  It's not bad.

I much prefer taking the time to find a locally-owned restaurant with a wait staff, a full bar and a respectable menu.  Not even thinking about caloric or health considerations.  Just quality and atmosphere.  Eating should be enjoyed...savored.  Not scarfed down.

Taco Bell, Taco Mayo, Taco Bueno, hell probably any mexican fast food restaurant (must be the Southwest American in me).
If there was a fast food buffalo wing restaurant, I would totally be raging for it.
Popeyes.

I just had some Jack in the Box yesterday.  Pretty good food, I like their innovative menu.  Their milkshakes are tasty and good.  Ever tried their Teriyaki rice bowls?  Those are good, hot steaming and fresh, even though the rice is americanized.  They're expanding big in Colorado and around Denver.

We have a local chain in CO called Smash Burger, it's a bit pricy but oh so good. Beef made fresh, not frozen.  Fries are crispy and awesome.

What most Coloradians desire is an In n Out. The closest one is in SW Utah.  I already e-mailed them and they're looking into it.  Had some in San Diego, it was packed, fresh and delicious.

We need to get is more steak houses.  We already have Lonestar, Salt Grass, Outback, Texas Roadhouse.  I ate at a Longhorn Steakhouse in Jacksonville, FL really good stuff.

Wow, where do you live that Indian food is as cheap as fast food?  Back in St. Louis there is a fair amount of Indian food but its usually $8-11 for the lunch buffets and maybe $12-20 per person for dinner.  The only place that you could possibly eat for the $6 fast food price would be the vegetarian Indian place.  Vietnamese, yes, could be closer to the fast food price, but still just a little higher - maybe $8-12 for dinner with a beverage.

I'm sorry, but chain steakhouses are, in general, disgusting.  Why not go for a locally owned steakhouse?

I was at a restaurant last summer (excuse me, it was actually a Supper Club.. not many of those around anymore) and it was so tacky with its 1970s era faux elegance... but the food was amazing.  The steak was fork tender and the Yorkshire puddings (I can't think of the other name we use for them when they're bigger..) were also really good.  Plus the owner was a lady from Berlin and we spoke German to eachother, which is always a plus in my book.

No?  What is it?  I just lump it in with all those junky chains.

Junky? Geesh, you must be a picky connoisseur. It's not your definition of fast food, which of course is a completely negative connotation. Subway sandwiches aren't really all that bad. They do what they do and IMHO they do it decently. I fail to see what the difference would be between buying a Subway sandwich and making a sandwich at your own house.

Uh...it doesn't take very high standards to be less than thrilled by the quality of food at any fast food establishment, including Subway.  But regardless of my views of all fast food, I still consider it the same as McDonalds or Dunkin Donuts.

Title: Re: Fast Food Chains You Desire

Well, that's because you're like the vast majority of posters here. You take your extreme dislike for one thing and apply it to everything in the same genre. It's the same way in which many here hate Wal Mart. They fail to see that everything has positive and negative aspects, they only consider negative and then blow it up to an extreme level to support their negativity. The world is bigger then black and white.

I think comparing Subway to McDonalds shows a bit of naivety if you ask me.

Title: Re: Fast Food Chains You Desire
Post by: fezzyfestoon on July 26, 2009, 10:10:03 PM
No, no, don't jump to any conclusions without knowing the whole story, another unfortunately popular habit of posters.  I have a very strong interest in health and wellness and have done all my research.  All fast food establishments suffer from the same lack of quality control or customer connection.  I know that from what I have learned about all such establishments individually and have yet to find an exception to the rule of fast food being terrible.  Franchising is almost universally the sparking of a precipitous decline in quality.  I know of no exceptions.

Title: Re: Fast Food Chains You Desire

So then, as a health expert, what is the major difference between making a sub at home with the same ingredients and going to Subway?

Title: Re: Fast Food Chains You Desire
Post by: fezzyfestoon on July 26, 2009, 10:27:29 PM
Like I said, quality of ingredients.  There is a huge difference between the ingredients at fast food establishments and those from a local store or even supermarket.  In other places moreso than Subway the preparation is also cause of concern to say the least.

Yea the idea that people usually go to White Castle when they are stoned as potraryed in Harold and Kumar isn't really far from the truth.  I know a lot of people who crave a crave case when they get high.  Drunk though, I don't know, I've never done that I feel like you would definitely get sick is White Castle on a good day gets you sick

You cannot compare the two.  I have not tasted the divinity of In and Out, but it is irrelevant.  If you crave a good old fashioned burger, In and Out can compare to Five Guys.  But if you crave what White Castle has, you can't get that at In and Out.  That's like asking whether I rather eat at Taco Bell or Arbys, it all depends on what I am craving.

Yeah, from people who have been to both, I hear In and Out compares to Five Guys.  White Castle is not a regular burger, its mini burgers grill onto of onions.  It has an extremely unique taste I have not seen replicated anywhere else except White Manna

As far as I can tell the only US fast-food chains there are in France are Mc Donalds and KFC. Burger King retired the few restaurants it had a few years ago. There is a Mc Donalds in every city of more than 15-20 thousands habitants. Big cities has of course several ones, then I wonder if there are more than 10 KFC within the country. An European Fast Food chain named Quick, which is a Mc Do like, is enough present here too, but just in cities of more than 100,000 habitants I would say. I think that's all for US fast food chains and like in France.

If we count pizzas, we have Pizza hut here in every cities of more than 100,000 habitants too I would say, and we have more Dominos Pizza, there is one in the 40,000 habitants city i live in.

Other than that I don't have a special wish concerning a fast food chain.

Ah, and, in very big cities, now, there are also some Mc Do-like that are...halal! They try to make some chains I think, but it remains pretty small. Some try to make some Kebab chains I think too.

Yeah, from people who have been to both, I hear In and Out compares to Five Guys.  White Castle is not a regular burger, its mini burgers grill onto of onions.  It has an extremely unique taste I have not seen replicated anywhere else except White Manna
Krystal does something similar.

White Castle is as far from In N Out as you can get on the burger joint spectrum.  White Castle is known for its cheap, rather disgusting but somehow irresistible little square hamburgers that are cooked only on one side with grilled onions and a steamed bun (which is on top of the burger, thus giving it an onion/beef flavor).. that you can buy a dozen or so of for really really cheap.

In N Out is most like Culvers here in the midwest when it comes to burgers, because they use fresh ground beef that has never been frozen and pride themselves in quality sides (fresh cut potatoes at In N Out and Wisconsin/Minnesota staples at Culvers like onion rings, cheese curds, and fried walleye).

Culvers is good, but its kind of greasy and sits heavy.  The fancy burgers from Hardees/Carls Jr are better.

Yeah Carls is definitely my second favorite fast food place after In-N-Out. I wish there was a White castle here so I could see what the fuss is all about.

I have been clamoring to get an In and Out Burger, although there plans do not seem to include westward expansion.  I should be thankful that Sonic has finally arrived to my area and a Five Guys has gone close and I have realized its goodness.

Are there any fast food chains that you really want to come to your area?

BEST FAST FOOD EVER. ONLY PLACE I GO.

Wendy's, Arby's (though the quality fluctuates wildly from one to another), and Chipotle (pretty much a much, much better version of Taco Bell) are the only ones I think have really good food.

I wouldn't consider Subway or Sheetz (for those who are familiar with the Altoona, PA based franchise, which is always far more people than I think) "fast food", but I like them too.

Fast food is more about food quality than anything else. Sheetz is definitely fast food.

Sonic has just opened up out here in Massachusetts, and supposedly the lines are several hours long just to get into the place.

Sonic was a favorite during my roadtripping days, so I'm pretty excited to be getting the chance to go back.

Don't expect any changes soon, the one in Hasbrouck Heights, NJ has been open since late June and there are still lines and cops telling people if they can go in.  I honestly HATE Sonic

Now I have begun clamoring for Golden Corral since they are running commericials ad nauseum despite not having a location closer than 2 hours (sort of like Sonic did)

Those Golden Corral commercials make me never want to step foot in the place. Of course the nearest one to my hometown is in Idaho so I don't think it'll be that hard to avoid them.

Chic-fil-a is one place I always crave, as well as Popeyes Fried Chicken. The nearest one to campus is 50 miles away.

What about Chic-fil-a? I think they are a cut above KFC or Popeyes, but even I avoid KFC. I find their food to be just gross. I can't get enough of Popeyes' spicy chicken strips though.

The key is the grilled chicken sandwich with nuggets instead of fries! That's what I always get, or the chicken strip salad, when I go to Chic-fil-a.

Popeyes is really good. I don't like KFC either, but since I live a block-and-a-half from one, I go there when I want fast food without having to take the bus or walk miles.

Some others than Mc Donalds, to compare...

Maybe I'll try KFC next time I'll go to Toulouse...

I very rarely indulge in five guys. Normally after I've been up a ridiculous amount of time working on projects and have gotten sick of cafeteria food, but don't feel like going to the local indian place (the only decent restaurant in this town that I know of) for whatever reason.

Hardee's!

I live in Germany and work for a defense contractor, so I have access to US facilities where I can at least get my Taco Bell fix.  :P   And the KFC over here is just as delicious as the KFC in the states, to my surprise.

Cookout and White Castle. And I've always thought of Popeyes as being amazing. White Castle's the only one I've had recently and it was just what I needed. Delicious...but I went to the gym like three extra times to work it off haha

Taco Bell - Filling up on Tacos (IE 10 of them) is very $$$
Random pizza place - for Pizza
Harveys - if nothing else is available and I'm starving and the convenience store is closed.

Fast food is so gross! I was raised on it and am extremely familiar because my mother is a loser at all things domestic. And Memphis is replete with all manner of fast food everywhere, even in neighborhoods that apparantly cannot support a supermarket. It's slime that's not fit for animal feed. And my brother is raising his kids on it, which makes me want to cry.
Back Yard Burgers is a local chain that is somewhat better. A little more expensive, and higher quality. I eat there a few times a year. Kind of a guilty pleasure. Probably comparable to the In N Out people are always talking about, but I don't really know because we don't have them here.

EDIT: Checked out the In N Out on wikipedia. WTF? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In-N-Out_Burger#Bible_references

I find it annoying that there is not a Wendy's within reasonable distance of where I live.

Same with a lovely fast food chain called Rally's, which seems to only exist in southern Glendale.

I desire to try a 'dinner' one, we only have the biggest burgers/pizzas stuffs when it come to American ones here in France, that is:

Mc Donald's
Subway (quite recent)
KFC (recent too)
Pizza Hut
Dominoes

(cant think of an other one)

Only tried Mc Do. Always fail to find something that could look like my concept of taste in it, convenient if you want something hot in the afternoon, they are also the only ones who are very present in the country. Others are mostly in big cities. Crazy how Subway went fast though.

We indeed have our local ones...

Can't think of a worthy one either, but never tried much of them too.
