Scott Stringer endorsed Bill de Blasio today, shutting down any rumors of a run.

Far too late even if he wanted to. De Blasio seems set to cruise to victory.

Without Hanna, Gibson, or Burgess this is sadly likely to be a snoozefest.

Schismatics, automatic HP. I won't pretend to be an expert on them but while ,I'm all with them in terms of rejecting liturgical wishy-washiness and a "reform of the reform", "good intentions" are not enough in my book to justify de facto rejecting the authority of the Pope and liberally accusing other Catholics of heresy.

Someone who voted while extremely drunk or under the influence of some narcotic.
Seriously it's comments like this, that make me angry. As a country we should be doing everything we can to avoid this toxic mentality.

Trump led in exactly zero polls (at least in the RCP database) there throughout the entire election. I can see why the result would've been treated with caution.

Mr President, I didn't mean you particularly.

I also must applaud my friend Winfield for remaining a staunch champion of moral standards and the lessons of the War of Secession.

To choose a State, I used my home town's Post code, and it happens that it corresponds to the city of Prescott, Arizona. Frémont, here I come!

We just had a major change and reboot relatively recently, in Atlasian terms. What justifies such a major change yet again, and so soon? From my vantage point the current system seems to be working. I don't see what this would do to improve game play. I cannot but help feel this is yet another manifestation of the secessionist fixation found amongst certain parts of those a "conservative" for "libertarian" persuasion.
12  Atlas Fantasy Elections / Atlas Fantasy Elections / Re: When did Fremont become such a Democratic bastion? on: July 12, 2017, 01:31:35 am
It's not and it never was.
AAZ lost by 2 votes, that is hardly a blanching.

Well, I don't recall it ever being as Democratic in registration and representation as it is today. Were there any voter registration efforts by Labor?
I recruited Kal in the game and Blair moved here.
Except that I didbn't have the time to recruit other people as it's not a long time I decided to be back in the game.

I miss the days when strategic registration literally destroyed your reputation and ruined your career in Atlasia. That is a genie that Adam took out the bottle and we have never put back since.

Hear, hear. In my day it was a bastion of the Right, whether in The People's Party or the Feds, and I'm sad to see that change...

If this is the best excuse he can come up with, then the emails must be a smoking gun, because otherwise he clearly wouldn't bother trying.

Basically, Trump's best defense is that he was too unimportant for Putin to ever bother with him (unlike Tillerson), and that he was at best someone who only consorted with provincial oligarchs (which is what Trump, sans reality show, essentially is himself). I can't imagine him going for this argument even if it'd save him. That said, it's entirely reasonable to expect that Trump's value in the Kremlin's eyes, boosted by the potentials of his vanity and indecorousness, increased once he started leading in the primaries.

It was with the Agalarovs that Trump partnered for the 2013 Miss Universe pageant, held in Moscow. That's how Goldstone, who arranged the presence of Trump and the contestants in an Emin Agalarov music video, knew Donald Jr. Emin, for his part, knew Veselnitskaya, queen of the regional courtrooms. Before he was elected, Trump's level of communication in Russia was no higher than that of the Moscow Region's elite, several notches below the Kremlin. Aras Agalarov said of Trump in a recent interview with the Russian daily Komsomolskaya Pravda:

"It's one thing when he communicates with me. That's, like, one level. But it's a different matter for him to communicate with the president of the Russian Federation"

It was Rex Tillerson, the current secretary of state, who, as chief executive officer at Exxon Mobil, enjoyed the highest level of access. Trump just wasn't important enough. It's entirely possible that a Kremlin effort to help Trump beat Hillary Clinton reached to lower levels because that's where it was easiest to establish contact with Trump's family. But it's more likely that Veselnitskaya, the tenacious and ambitious lawyer who could pull every string in the Moscow Region, did so to get her pet issue -- the repeal of the Magnitsky Act, which was getting her major client in trouble -- in front of some important Americans. That kind of effort would have been on the right level.

Are you all serious?

"If it's what you say I love it, especially later in the summer." Trump Jr. explicitly was advising Goldstone to drop info closer to the election. Like, what sort of person's reaction to "...s part of Russia and its government's support for Mr. Trump" isn't immediately contacting the FBI?

This stuff is ridiculously incriminating, and he CCed Manafort and Kushner on the whole chain.

Wait, what is this "Crown Prosecutor of Russia" business? Is he referring to the Prosecutor-General, I think it is?

1.500 soldiers arrived in Brasilia to reinforce the security, the Military Police estimated 35.000 people protesting at it's peak and the CUT estimated 200.000 people during all the day, ministries buildings have been targets of vandalism. 7 people were jailed and 49 injured.

The CUT launched the #, "#OcupaBrasilia" (#OccupyBrasilia)

The chances of this guy becoming President just shot up.

But ideally someone like Joaquim Barbosa will be selected.

He is denying there will be any military intervention almost every other day now. To me, the increasing frequency of such statements closely mimics the pattern that of the Thai army's similar assurances that they wouldn't stage a coup, which both became more frequent and increasingly ambiguous over time, and we all know how that ended.

Villas Boas: Army is in state of "shock, consternation, and concern"

Villas Boas: Armed Forces are most trusted institution because of "values, ethics, and traditions", celebrates opinion poll showing 84% trust in military while presidency is trusted by just 3%

Imagine if Joseph Dunford were to talk in this manner with the background of everything that's been happening to Trump right now. We'd find that very odd, right?

20  General Politics / U.S. General Discussion / Re: Mnuchin Wedding Caption Contest on: June 28, 2017, 04:41:15 pm
What is wrong with Mnuchin's jacket?

Nothing, as far as I can see. On closer inspection, however, his trousers are comically low-rise; I thought it his waistcoat was slightly too long at first, but it seems his shirt is sticking out underneath his waistcoat. Given the formality of his outfit he may as well be "sagging"; the entire point of a waistcoat is to, predictably, cover the waist.

These people are so incompetent they cannot even pull off looking like proper plutocrats!
21  General Politics / U.S. General Discussion / Re: Despite Embarrassments, 100s of Judges Preside in New York Without Law Degrees on: June 28, 2017, 04:37:22 pm
I recall seeing about a dozen people, all running unopposed, on the ballot for judgeships here last November. I wrote in a few legal scholars and left the rest blank. I understand that they (that, is the Democratic nomination for the post) are largely handed out by borough party bosses as favors to allies and are in effect sinecures. Many of these bosses are lawyers and in turn can make a fortune representing clients in front of these judges whom they have in effect placed in office! A few have gone to jail for bribes, yes, but by and large the practice continues in more or less the same form as it did in the days of Tammany Hall.

I remember reading something about one such crony judge not too long ago, I forget where. This judge was a drunk who'd show up late to court and managed to get herself promoted to the state Supreme Court where she'd have stayed if not for decision to rave at some journalists one day for daring to take notes on the proceedings. It's the same story on Long Island, with the exception that the practice there is bipartisan; the divvying up of the seats is agreed in advance and many candidates receive cross-party endorsement.
22  General Politics / U.S. General Discussion / Re: Liberals...do you realize Trump is "winning"? on: June 28, 2017, 04:20:47 pm
No matter how right-wing you may be, Cal, you'll eventually find that the common trait amongst all but a few within today's GOP is the lack of any sort of capacity for logical reasoning, empathy, or pragmatism. In short, brainlessness. They are so intellectually bankrupt that they cannot even adhere to a coherent "pro-business" line, and thus repudiate the consensus of corporate America things like the Paris Agreement, the EXIM Bank, or a functional healthcare system for the sake of a few deep pocketed ideologues. They preach moral rectitude yet have brought a corpulent, dissolute vulgarian to the White House who they by and large stood by even as he boasted of his ability to fondle women's genitals. They aver fiscal responsibility yet have repeatedly wrecked our nation's finances every time they've come to power in the past few decades, as this administration seems intent on doing yet again.

There are a few good people, not necessarily "moderates" like Kasich, Haslam, or Baker, but also genuine conservatives like Flake or Sasse, but they are now in the decisive minority. As for the rest, there are many things one might call them, but "conservative" is not one of them.
23  General Politics / U.S. General Discussion / Re: Mnuchin Wedding Caption Contest on: June 28, 2017, 04:12:19 pm
So, the happy bride, 36-year-old actress Louise Linton, is also...um...

Quote from: The LA Times
The trouble began with an article by Linton that appeared in the Telegraph in the UK on July 1 under the headline "How my dream gap year in Africa turned into a nightmare," accompanied by a photo of the blond actress.

The article was meant to promote Linton's book, “In Congo's Shadow: One Girl's Perilous Journey to the Heart of Africa," co-written with author Wendy Holden, which was published via Amazon’s self-publishing platform CreateSpace in the U.S. in April.

In the article, Linton, who was in Zambia, described hiding from armed rebels as a nearby village was being attacked. "As the night ticked interminably by, I tried not to think what the rebels would do to the 'skinny white muzungu with long angel hair’ if they found me," she writes, using a Swahili word for a foreigner of European heritage.

"Life was idyllic at first," Linton writes, "but I soon learned that Africa is rife with hidden danger. I witnessed random acts of violence, contracted malaria and had close encounters with lions, elephants, crocodiles and snakes."

You're joking. It's the woman who wrote that? What an utter parody this administration is.

Does Trump have a pathological aversion to buttoning his suit?

Is the phrase "a party of the right-wing, not a right-wing party" still accurate?
