Uh... what happened to austerity?! That's seriously outrageous.

Fail. Imagine how many unemployed youths could be hired to do necessary renovation and welfare jobs for the cost of this failure.

Imagine how many unemployed youths are being trained by Navantia and now will get more money to fix this problem.
2  General Politics / International General Discussion / Re: Hungary is now actually fascist on: Today at 11:20:28 am
Putin IS a fascist.

How so? One can be a right wing authoritarian without being a fascist.

Fascism does also require the whole cult of personality thing.

Why Putin? He was nothing more than a KGB officer at the time.
4  General Politics / International General Discussion / Re: UK General Discussion on: May 22, 2013, 12:25:37 pm
Sorry, my mistake - attackers are alive and in custody in hospital after being shot by police. No other injuries.
5  General Politics / International General Discussion / Re: UK General Discussion on: May 22, 2013, 12:04:16 pm
Various media outlets now reporting that Police are treating this as a TERROR ATTACK.

The two suspects of course dead, but something may well turn up in their residences.

My thoughts and prayers are with the victims.

I watch it (latter half of second season here in the UK).
7  Forum Community / Off-topic Board / Re: Doctor Who 50th Anniversary (and general series discussion) on: May 19, 2013, 03:49:56 pm

I have that feeling too. What's interesting is that as of the end of the episode the Doctor and Clara are still in the Doctors time stream. It's entirely possible they remain there for whatever reason and that allows the 10th Doctor to make a plausible appearance. Either way the interview snippet suggests the two doctors get on well.

Relatively speaking for inter-Doctor relationships; it's a standing point of the EU that the other incarnations really don't like Seven.

I just hope you do another song like the smorgasbord one.
9  General Politics / International General Discussion / Re: The EU Can Survive Without The UK, Says François Hollande on: May 19, 2013, 10:43:32 am
More trolling by Francois 'recession' Hollande.

I must have missed the fantastic economic boom Britain is experiencing right now under David "f**k the poor" Cameron. Roll Eyes

Actually, according most recent indicators this year will be the one in which the UK makes a definitive recovery. Brits are as a whole much more optimistic about the next few years than they've been for 5 or 6 years. Confidence is back.

We will have made a recovery when unemployment is below 2 million.

Oh, and I think we should sign up for Schengen too Smiley

Why?

Schengen? For the simple reason that we wouldn't have to queue at passport control when going to the Continent.

Mostly generic and below average songs, SVT's camera work left much to be desired for, but the comedy song from Sweden was brilliant.
12  General Politics / International General Discussion / Re: The EU Can Survive Without The UK, Says François Hollande on: May 18, 2013, 03:05:23 pm
We wouldn't do any less well given that we'd instantly sign a free-trade deal with the EU and carry on like Switzerland minus Schengen. We may do better. The CDU would more easily end up with their wet dream of a USE.

Would you instantly get a free trade deal though?

The UK is too big and too important a market to be left out in the cold, so you would get a free trade agreement without too much hassle.

The question is how much hassle there would be - and we would not be able to influence decisions from the rest of the bloc.

It already does, for all practical purposes.

It did for its first 15 years.
15  General Politics / International General Discussion / Re: UK General Discussion on: May 16, 2013, 12:31:45 pm
2015 looks set to give us such an odd realignment when you consider what'll happen in cities like Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool with Labour and the LibDems and what'll happen down south in the Bostons and the Thanets of the country with the Tories and UKIP (or even Labour, if they can run through the middle and get some unexpected gains).

2015 will be like every other election. I still don't think UKIP will pick up a more than about 1 seat (if Farage is still knocking around). It'll be a Tory v Labour fight yet again. The fact that Labour can't muster runaway Blairesque leads three years into a Tory government is good news. Indeed they haven't been able to reach the dizzy midterm highs of Foot and Kinnock either.

It's not a Tory government, it's a Tory-Lib Dem government... we're in uncharted territory here.
16  General Politics / U.S. General Discussion / Re: "Doctor" Kermit Gosnell found guilty. on: May 15, 2013, 11:53:37 am
I don't know why you put scare quotes around the doctor. He is a doctor, he's earned that degree, even if he's not a very good one.

His actions render that title null and void - he'll certainly get struck off for it.
17  General Politics / International General Discussion / Re: Dhaka factory disaster - owner arrested on: May 14, 2013, 11:12:30 am
It has to do with the idea of natural rights. You are your own property, so you should have the right to do with yourself as you please, without interference from others, as long as you do not interfere with the similar exercise of others. Along those lines, every law ascribes to property rights. Murder is a violation of property rights.

I would argue that the use of narcotics interferes with the natural rights of others as they can't do what they because they have to look after you, although though that is the subject for another topic.

As for efficiency, I do not want to be some efficient drone of capitalism, thank you.
18  General Politics / International General Discussion / Re: North Korea declares War on South Korea on: May 12, 2013, 03:53:39 pm

When is the last time the U.S. has picked off a North Korean missile, or for that matter any foreign missile? Name one time.

2003 - Patriots bagged a number of SRBMs fired by Iraq.

A choice between starvation and working in a dangerous factory is no choice at all.
20  Other Elections - Analysis and Discussion / International Elections / Re: Pakistan 2013 on: May 11, 2013, 04:10:35 pm
Good that so many people turned out despite the attacks, slightly less good that this is likely to be a hung legislature; Pakistan really needs a decisive legitimate government.
21  General Politics / International General Discussion / Re: Dhaka factory disaster - owner arrested on: May 11, 2013, 11:31:16 am
The owner should be put in jail for a long, long time.

Horrifically bad publicity there. What is it with Peterborough? I suppose it being in the middle of a giant swamp might mean the water table is poisoned or something.

Can't say - the only time I've ever been there was going through it by train.
24  Forum Community / Off-topic Board / Re: The AV Club calls for quitting pulling TV episodes because of real world events on: May 08, 2013, 12:09:30 pm
Are the emotions going to be any less raw two/three weeks later?

For those not directly caught up in it, yes.
25  Forum Community / Off-topic Board / Re: The AV Club calls for quitting pulling TV episodes because of real world events on: May 07, 2013, 12:52:46 pm
Disagree - the TV episodes can wait until the emotions are less raw.

No one is forcing anybody to watch anything.  Why do you want to force people not to be able to watch something?

Why can't people be understanding and patient?

Why do you insist that nobody be able to watch a tv show because something happened that upset you?  Again, if you're too upset to watch the show, don't watch it.  Don't force everyone else to miss it.

You're not 'missing it', you're waiting a couple of weeks. Even if people don't watch it, they'll still know it's on.
