Inks, it's a rare thing to actually live by one's own moral code. It's commendable. But you should try these things out, because you really can't understand them until you have... ideally, from my point of view, you would ultimately abandon social conservatism; but if not, who cares? Everyone makes mistakes, right? It just proves you have blood in your veins like everyone else. I actually still have a tough time believing there are actually people who wait until they're 21 to drink. Was my university just very abnormal? No. You know when you're on campus on a weekend night, and everyone you see is getting wasted and having a great time? You don't see any straightedge people because they stay at home. That doesn't mean they don't exist, though.

So... does Reid still win the Black Vote in his November senate race?
Of course. They don't know how else to vote. I love people who can say insulting things like this while expressing their outrage at Reid's comment. Reid is a Democrat, you see.

General Politics / Individual Politics / Opinion of Jackson County, Tennessee
|
on: January 11, 2010, 11:49:25 am

Since Kentucky's Jackson got one. Jackson County, in middle Tennessee, has fewer than 10,000 people, considered 100 percent rural by the Census. The population is 99 percent white, 0.15 percent black, and 18 percent are below the poverty line; the top ethnicities are "American" (55 percent), Irish (10 percent), and English (10 percent). It has voted relentlessly Democratic, from the days of its namesake till now. The only Republican ever to carry Jackson was Warren Harding, in 1920. recent results: 2000: Gore 70%, Bush 29%2004: Kerry 59%, Bush 40% [Swing: R+22%] 2008: Obama 49.4%, McCain 48.5% [Swing: R+18%] 2008 Democratic Primary (2,020 votes): Clinton 85%, Obama 10%, Edwards 4% 2008 Republican Primary (799 votes): Huckabee 37%, McCain 27%, Romney 26%, Paul 6%, Thompson 3% just for lolz, the 1968 result: Humphrey 41%, Wallace 34%, Nixon 25%Might be worth it to sample this thread on the City-Data board, too: Jackson County has always been known as a hotbed of rugged individualists who have a deep mistrust of law enforcement. The joke used to be that marijuana was the county's number one cash crop. It might still be, who knows... I will say, however, that I wouldn't put much faith in the sheriff's department. The sheriff and four deputies were recently arrested for having sex with inmates in the county jail, and a TV station in Nashville has reported that a porno movie was shot in the courthouse in Gainesboro. Jackson county has been the poorest county for as long as I remember. It is run down and crime is very high per capita. Land and homes are cheap there for good reason. Land can be had for $1K an acre. The locals would love to sell you some so they can leave for somewhere better. If you buy enough you can sort of lock yourself away from the rest of the area. Many are doing that now in rural areas of TN.
Good luck to you. What say you?

General Politics / Political Debate / Re: Should people with mental problems vote?

Yes. On a (kinda) related note, Nevada had a referendum in 2004, changing the language that "idiots and insane persons" can't vote, to those "who have been adjudicated mentally incompetent, unless restored to legal capacity." It passed, but 46 percent voted No, and it failed in nine counties. I guess rural Republican Nevadans aren't soft on the retards and crazies.

I'd say No. Even though some of those people are not exactly the brightest, some of them genuinely want to protest against Obama and his policies, in the same war that many liberals frequently protested against Bush's policies. However, I am against what the teabaggers believe in, but I support their right to say what they want.
You should write a book. "Moderate Heroism for Dummies."

"should not be allowed to vote because they are irrational, erratic and emotional creatures" If that's the case, why is anyone calling themselves "Republican" allowed near the voting booth?

A Republican wouldn't say that. After all, who fought for slavery in the Civil War? Democrats. Who instated Jim Crow laws? Democrats. Who attempted to filibuster the Civil Rights Act of 1964? Democrats. Who continues to hold back minorities by keeping them dependent on welfare checks rather than actively helping them rise out of poverty? Democrats. Yep. In 2008, 88 percent of Alabama whites, 84 percent of Louisiana whites, 88 percent of Mississippi whites, and 73 percent of Texas whites voted Republican, in protest against Democrat racism. How enlightened!

General Politics / U.S. General Discussion / Re: In an actual Barack Obama vs. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad race
|
on: January 09, 2010, 04:44:40 pm
|
What counties would Ahmadinejad win? Ahmadinejad's tough stance on Jews and alcohol wins him the support of many rural Mormons and Southern Baptists. Several prominent conservatives, including Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck, urge their followers to vote for him as the "lesser of two evils," citing his support for family values and his hard line on crime. A popular bumper sticker distributed by a Tea Party organization states, "I'd rather have an HONEST Muslim!" Mahmoud ultimately wins 40 percent of self-described "conservatives," although he's supported by only 4 percent of "liberals" and 17 percent of "moderates." He wins majorities or pluralities in 389 counties nationwide, although he only carries the state of Oklahoma. probably none... If, during a presidential debate, the Republican nominee pulled out a gun and started shooting into the audience- and Obama tackled him to the ground, wrestling away the piece- the GOP would still carry some counties.

General Politics / Individual Politics / Re: Cops or pot dealers
|

Yeah there's certainly a difference between a pot dealer and a coke dealer. Only if they're getting high on their own supply. The real difference is the relative value of these drugs. Would you be more likely to kill someone for robbing you of $400 or $40,000? (Maybe neither; that's not the point. They have their own rules in the drug world) Also, of course, most weed sold in the US today is domestic, while cocaine has to be imported; so if you sell blow, someone down the line has to be dealing with some Very Bad People at some point, and that culture seems to filter down to some extent. Part of is just "life imitating art imitating life"; the popular image of the "marijuana dealer" is an old burnout with some plants in his garden. The popular image of the "cocaine dealer" is Al Pacino in Scarface. anyway, for the poll, pot dealers.

Presidential Elections - Analysis and Discussion / Presidential Election Trends / Re: Hillary Clinton rules out future presidential run
|
on: January 07, 2010, 04:06:15 pm

I was automatically labeled a racist for supporting the white candidate to which I always called Obama's supporters sexist for not supporting the female candidate. The knife cuts both ways, people. I met a girl who supported Clinton because Obama was the product of a "ghetto culture of misogyny," and ended up voting for McCain/ Palin in protest at the media's "sexist" treatment of Hillary and Sarah. I called her a stupid bitch and walked away. No, I didn't. I asked if she wanted a cigarette (she did), we got to talking, and she asked me to hang out with her. Of course, I said yes, and we screwed literally three hours later. That was fun. Anyway, what were we talking about? Oh, Hillary's presidential prospects. I think it would be easier for her to get Obama, Biden, Pelosi, and Byrd into a room together and arrange for a crew of masked "terrorists" to burst in and mow them down with AK-47 fire. Like what she did with Vince Foster, but on a much bigger scale.
