General Politics / International General Discussion / 1 week until the 2011 German Census results are released

One thing is already clear: Germany will have MUCH fewer people than what is now estimated (more like 80 Mio. and not 81.6 Mio. like it was estimated on Census Day May 9, 2011).
It will also be interesting to see how the population changed in the Eastern German states, where the last (GDR) Census was in 1981.
There could be really big flaws in the people's registers there, because many young people could have left the states for Western Germany without de-registering. Also, many dead people could still be on the registers. Also, if people moved from abroad to Germany and after a few months/years back to where they came from, without de-registering. And so on ...
Another important thing to watch if Hessen has enough inhabitants not to lose one of its 5 seats in the Bundesrat.

The FPÖ and also the BZÖ once again get bad media coverage these days: http://derstandard.at/1369361530839/Telekom-Prozess-Strache-sieht-Skandal--des-BZOeThe Telekom-corruption trial (one of the last to be examined) from the Schüssel-era (2000-2006) has started recently and there have been shady money-flows from the Telekom to the FPÖ in 2004. Of course FPÖ-leader Strache now says that the current FPÖ has nothing to do with this (which might actually be correct, since Strache took over as FPÖ-leader in 2005 with new leadership and most of the people in the trial have gone from the FPÖ to the BZÖ in 2004/2005), but still it is not really beneficial for the FPÖ right now to appear in a shady light a few months before the federal election. Considering that the trial and the appeals take a while and could drag on until or after the election, it means the FPÖ will be in a bad light for the next months. Which further means they might get back to their anti-foreigner tirades ahead of the election to divert attention from this. I wonder if they will actually get more than the 17.5% they got in the 2008 election ... And we don't have to talk about the BZÖ anymore. It is already DOA on election day, since all their previous supporters from 2008 have either gone to the Team Stronach, to the ÖVP or into the non-voter category.

Ouch to Iran and Pakistan for losing to North Korea.
Also, Germany rated itself lower than many countries rated it.
Guilt over the Nazi era would be my guess. Don't think that plays a big role these days. More like left-wingers saying that Germany's influence is bad because of Merkel's leadership in the EU and demanding too much from the "small" Greek etc. man as well as Germany's involvement in Afghanistan etc.

FPÖ-people here would already have their heads explode, saying stuff like: "Put those unappreciative immigrant juveniles into the next plane with their 10 belongings and send them back to where they came from if they think they have it better there. Their welfare money would be much better off with the "real" Swedes."
And so on ...
(Is that roughly what the Sweden Democrats say or are they taking a more moderate approach ?)

General Politics / International General Discussion / Re: Civil War in Syria

Chancellor Faymann has said that if the EU fails to reach an agreement on the arms embargo for the Syrian rebels that's running out in June, Austria might pull out of the Golan completely. Currently, Austria has 400 soldiers in the Golan between Israel and Syria as part of a UN peacekeeping mission that started in the 70s. If Austria moves out, the Philippines will do so as well (they have said so a few weeks ago). Austria and the Philippines have almost all troops there, just a few Indian troops are there as well. Arming the rebels would be way too dangerous for our soldiers there, especially if they or the regime decides to attack Israel via the Golan. Vice Chancellor Spindelegger and Defense Minister Klug back the Chancellor on this issue.
