1  General Politics / International General Discussion / 1 week until the 2011 German Census results are released on: Today at 07:54:46 am
One thing is already clear: Germany will have MUCH fewer people than what is now estimated (more like 80 Mio. and not 81.6 Mio. like it was estimated on Census Day May 9, 2011).

It will also be interesting to see how the population changed in the Eastern German states, where the last (GDR) Census was in 1981.

There could be really big flaws in the people's registers there, because many young people could have left the states for Western Germany without de-registering. Also, many dead people could still be on the registers. Also, if people moved from abroad to Germany and after a few months/years back to where they came from, without de-registering. And so on ...

Another important thing to watch if Hessen has enough inhabitants not to lose one of its 5 seats in the Bundesrat.

New ARD/Infratest dimap poll:

GERMANY

41% CDU/CSU
27% SPD
14% Greens
  6% Left
 4% FDP
  2% Pirates
  2% AfD
  4% Others

No majority for CDU/CSU or SPD/Greens. Grand Coalition would be possible.

WESTERN GERMANY

41% CDU/CSU
28% SPD
16% Greens
 4% FDP
  3% Left
  2% Pirates
  2% AfD
  4% Others

Hypothetical majority for SPD-Greens.

EASTERN GERMANY

39% CDU/CSU
22% SPD
16% Left
  9% Greens
 4% FDP
  3% Pirates
  3% AfD
  4% Others

Hypothetical Grand Coalition would be possible.
3  Presidential Elections - Analysis and Discussion / 2016 U.S. Presidential General Election Polls / Re: IA-Quinnipiac: Paul & Rubio trail Hillary, but they lead Biden on: Today at 07:10:19 am
The 18-29 Clinton/Paul breakdown must be really off.

Especially if we compare it with Biden/Paul.

Why would young voters vote exactly the opposite way like they did in 2012, just because it's Clinton vs. Paul ?

In 2012, it was O+16 and in in 2008 is was O+25 in this age-group in Iowa.

That doesn't make much sense.
4  Other Elections - Analysis and Discussion / International Elections / Re: 2013 Austrian Parliamentary Election + State Elections + Army Draft Referendum on: Today at 07:01:38 am
The FPÖ and also the BZÖ once again get bad media coverage these days:

http://derstandard.at/1369361530839/Telekom-Prozess-Strache-sieht-Skandal--des-BZOe

The Telekom-corruption trial (one of the last to be examined) from the Schüssel-era (2000-2006) has started recently and there have been shady money-flows from the Telekom to the FPÖ in 2004.

Of course FPÖ-leader Strache now says that the current FPÖ has nothing to do with this (which might actually be correct, since Strache took over as FPÖ-leader in 2005 with new leadership and most of the people in the trial have gone from the FPÖ to the BZÖ in 2004/2005), but still it is not really beneficial for the FPÖ right now to appear in a shady light a few months before the federal election.

Considering that the trial and the appeals take a while and could drag on until or after the election, it means the FPÖ will be in a bad light for the next months. Which further means they might get back to their anti-foreigner tirades ahead of the election to divert attention from this.

I wonder if they will actually get more than the 17.5% they got in the 2008 election ...

And we don't have to talk about the BZÖ anymore. It is already DOA on election day, since all their previous supporters from 2008 have either gone to the Team Stronach, to the ÖVP or into the non-voter category.

6  General Politics / International General Discussion / Re: BBC poll: Germany is the most popular country on the planet on: Today at 05:23:46 am
Ouch to Iran and Pakistan for losing to North Korea.

Also, Germany rated itself lower than many countries rated it.

Guilt over the Nazi era would be my guess.

Don't think that plays a big role these days.

More like left-wingers saying that Germany's influence is bad because of Merkel's leadership in the EU and demanding too much from the "small" Greek etc. man as well as Germany's involvement in Afghanistan etc.
7  Presidential Elections - Analysis and Discussion / 2016 U.S. Presidential General Election Polls / IA-Quinnipiac: Paul & Rubio trail Hillary, but they lead Biden on: Today at 05:05:45 am
This is Quinnipiac's first Iowa poll ever:

Do you approve or disapprove of the way Barack Obama is handling his job as President?

45-50 disapprove

If the election for President were being held today, and the candidates were Hillary Clinton the Democrat and Marco Rubio the Republican, for whom would you vote?

48-37 Clinton

If the election for President were being held today, and the candidates were Hillary Clinton the Democrat and Rand Paul the Republican, for whom would you vote?

46-42 Clinton

If the election for President were being held today, and the candidates were Joe Biden the Democrat and Marco Rubio the Republican, for whom would you vote?

40-39 Rubio

If the election for President were being held today, and the candidates were Joe Biden the Democrat and Rand Paul the Republican, for whom would you vote?

44-39 Paul

...

From May 15 - 21, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,411 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.6 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones.

11  General Politics / International General Discussion / Re: Sweden stunned by third night of Stockholm rioting on: May 23, 2013, 06:19:24 am
FPÖ-people here would already have their heads explode, saying stuff like: "Put those unappreciative immigrant juveniles into the next plane with their 10 belongings and send them back to where they came from if they think they have it better there. Their welfare money would be much better off with the "real" Swedes."

And so on ...

(Is that roughly what the Sweden Democrats say or are they taking a more moderate approach ?)
12  General Politics / International General Discussion / Re: BBC poll: Germany is the most popular country on the planet on: May 23, 2013, 05:57:32 am
Weird.

Not really, but Canada is within the MoE (only 2 points behind in the net balance).

Besides, the "Made in Germany"-factor probably adds to the popularity, because many people around the globe enjoy the advantages of German-made quality products.

But maybe, if they included Sweden, it would come out on top.

BBC poll: Germany most popular country in the world

Quote
Germany is the most positively viewed nation in the world in this year's annual Country Ratings Poll for the BBC World Service.

More than 26,000 people were surveyed internationally for the poll.

They were asked to rate 16 countries and the European Union on whether their influence in the world was "mainly positive" or "mainly negative".

Germany came out top, with 59% rating it positively. Iran was once again the most negatively viewed.

Global views of Europe's biggest country have improved significantly in 2013, according to the poll.

It was conducted for the BBC by GlobeScan and PIPA, who conducted face-to-face and telephone interviews with randomly selected people in 25 countries.

Or do you buy each year ?

Despite the Internet and Wikipedia, I buy the "Fischer Weltalmanach" each year. It comes out in Mid-September of each year, has ca. 800 pages, costs ca. 26$ and covers the events from July 1 to June 30 of each year in every country.

You can look into it here:

15  Presidential Elections - Analysis and Discussion / 2016 U.S. Presidential Election / Re: Biden praises Jewish influence on American culture, ends up pleasing antiSemites on: May 23, 2013, 01:43:50 am
Well, Biden just wanted to lubricate some honey around the faces of his potential Jewish primary voters. (someone please correct me if this is not the correct English translation for the German term "jemandem Honig um den Bart schmieren"). There are probably more Jewish voters among Democrats than Anti-Semites, so it was probably a good try.

Do we actually know if this poll includes 2016 questions?

Well, not really, but considering they did before in almost all states they polled and it's IOWA, I'm about 95% certain they will.

20  General Politics / International General Discussion / Re: Civil War in Syria on: May 22, 2013, 03:15:57 pm
Chancellor Faymann has said that if the EU fails to reach an agreement on the arms embargo for the Syrian rebels that's running out in June, Austria might pull out of the Golan completely. Currently, Austria has 400 soldiers in the Golan between Israel and Syria as part of a UN peacekeeping mission that started in the 70s. If Austria moves out, the Philippines will do so as well (they have said so a few weeks ago). Austria and the Philippines have almost all troops there, just a few Indian troops are there as well. Arming the rebels would be way too dangerous for our soldiers there, especially if they or the regime decides to attack Israel via the Golan. Vice Chancellor Spindelegger and Defense Minister Klug back the Chancellor on this issue.

New YouGov poll about the Final:

Who do you support in the Final ?

Interesting that SPD/Green voters are more likely to back Dortmund (60%), while CDU/CSU (34%) and FDP voters (30%) are more likely to back Bayern.

Probably almost nobody besides people in Bayern and maybe Baden-Württemberg or Thüringen support Bayern, while the "Prussians" north to it support Dortmund.

22  General Politics / U.S. General Discussion / Re: Polls on Same-Sex Marriage State Laws on: May 22, 2013, 11:30:11 am
Previous PPP polls in the states have shown though that only a small part of the "civil union" people also support SSM.

So, in this case it would be ca. 35-60 opposed, with 5% undecided.

The poll results suggest a marked shift in Tennesseans’ views since 2006, when 81 percent of voters approved an amendment to the state constitution defining marriage between one man and one woman as “the only legally recognized marital contract” in the state.
