1  General Politics / Political Geography & Demographics / Re: Most astonishing election result of the last 50 years on: February 11, 2013, 07:03:35 pm
I don't recall which year it was, but the Australian Labor Party was winning seats in some of the most conservative parts of Queensland, including Dawson.  Here, politicians like Margaret Chase Smith, Ted Stevens, William Bray, and John Happy Camp losing were astonishing, even if they weren't all upsets.

Not one mention of Legend of Zelda:  A Link to the Past?  That game was awesome.  Until last year, it was the latest Zelda game I had played, so I'm kind of biased.
3  Other Elections - Analysis and Discussion / Congressional Elections / Re: House seats Democrats lost to racial gerrymandering in the 1992/1994 cycles on: November 17, 2012, 04:43:14 pm
I thought that Peter Deutsch replaced Fascell, though I could be wrong.  For other seats, Dems lost the MO-2 because of it.  William Clay and Dick Gephardt took African American precincts from Joan Kelly Horn to meet population standards for their districts.  Dems also lost a suburban Chicago seat to make room for the new Hispanic 4th CD.  Dems also traded white majority seats for African American ones in Louisiana and Maryland, to name two.

Romney/Democrat Confirmed:

MI-07 may also be Obama/Republican.  Walberg wildly underperformed against a nobody again.

Does Walberg ever not underperform?  Why he got a pass this year is a mystery to me.
5  Other Elections - Analysis and Discussion / Congressional Elections / Re: Indiana 2012 Congressional Races on: November 09, 2012, 06:28:33 pm
What about Todd Rokita for Senate?  He's already run statewide.
6  Other Elections - Analysis and Discussion / Congressional Elections / Re: Democrats poised for a big night in the Senate? on: November 05, 2012, 07:20:23 pm
I'd say 62 in the case.  If Republicans are winning New Jersey, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, then they are almost certainly winning New Mexico.

Why would Drudge report a Romney scandal?
There has to be a democrat version of Drudge Report out there.

That'd be Larry Flynt.

Anyway, the Senator in question is clearly Bernie Sanders, duh.
9  Other Elections - Analysis and Discussion / Congressional Elections / Re: Indiana 2012 Congressional Races on: October 28, 2012, 10:17:03 am
Thanks for the response.  I thought that since Dems had gotten a seious recruit in the 5th, they might have at least tried there a little bit.  I hadn't heard about either race since the primary, so I was wondering.

Anything happening in the 5th or 6th districts?
11  Election Archive / 2012 House Election Polls / Re: MA-06: MassINC: Tierney (D) beating Tisei (R) on: September 14, 2012, 07:40:32 pm
Obama is going to help Tierney, move along folks.

Definately.  When was the last time a competent incumbent lost in a district that his party's Presidential nominee was carrying by double digits?

Garner Shriver (KS-4) 1976?
Sherman Lloyd (UT-2) 1972?
Maybe Lyle Williams (OH-19) in 1984 - I'm not sure how well Reagan did there.
12  Other Elections - Analysis and Discussion / Congressional Elections / Re: Biggest House race upsets since 1982 on: September 10, 2012, 06:08:23 pm
Although he had a ton of problems, George Hansen losing the ID-2 in 1984 could be up there, given the district and year.  I don't know much about the race, but Jill Long taking Dan Coats' seat in a 1989 special might be another.  At least to the national parties, Herb Klein winning NJ-8 in 1992 and Ron Lewis winning KY-2 in 1994 were upsets.
13  Other Elections - Analysis and Discussion / Congressional Elections / Re: Biggest Senate upsets since 1978 on: August 29, 2012, 10:38:51 am
Frank Lautenberg beating Millicent Fenwick in NJ in 1982 was a big upset I believe.  Herman Talmadge's loss in GA 1980 was an upset too; pundits I've read had him as one of the safer Democrats up for reelection that year.
14  Other Elections - Analysis and Discussion / Congressional Elections / Re: Republicans and the Senate on: August 14, 2012, 11:24:34 pm
Montana is also a tough state for Republicans in Senate races.  Other than Conrad Burns, only one Republican has been elected to the Senate since the Taft administration.  Montana's populism has kept the state from moving entirely to the GOP like neighboring states or the South has, I'd say.
15  Other Elections - Analysis and Discussion / Congressional Elections / Re: In central FL, seniority trumping tea party with Mica/Adams on: August 14, 2012, 11:18:27 pm
For anyone who doesn't know, John's brother Dan represented Palm Beach County in the House from 1978-1988, as a Democrat.  Ted Deutch has the seat now.
16  General Politics / U.S. General Discussion / Re: Politician makes moronic racist statement. on: April 06, 2012, 08:19:28 pm
This would be a pretty mild statement from Bilbo, I think, compared to what else he's said.
17  General Politics / Political Geography & Demographics / Re: interesting fact about John Dingell on: March 28, 2012, 07:19:32 pm
John Lesinki, who Dingell beat in 1964, was the only non-Southern Democrat to vote against the 1963 civil rights bill.
18  General Politics / U.S. General Discussion / Re: Occupiers dump human feces on Manhattan streets on: March 23, 2012, 05:05:32 pm
How are they so sure these are legit Occupy protesters as opposed to impostors trying to discredit them?

The Republicans and media don't care.
19  Other Elections - Analysis and Discussion / Gubernatorial/Statewide Elections / Re: Southern State Legislative Chambers Up in 2012 on: March 02, 2012, 08:10:27 pm
How did we see that the Kentucky GOP is in decline?

Didn't you see the election results on Tuesday?

Did you see the results of Oklahoma's state elections in 2006?

Republicans gained in the State Senate, achieving a tie I believe.

21  General Politics / U.S. General Discussion / Re: is there such thing as a "congressional" troll? on: November 26, 2011, 02:28:26 pm
John Rarick and James Traficant are possible examples.  Rarick used to enter racist and anti-semitic material into the Congressional Record, and as for Traficant, just watch any of his speeches.
22  Other Elections - Analysis and Discussion / Congressional Elections / Re: The Ben Nelson Quiz on: November 23, 2011, 06:33:03 pm
Did Arlen Specter get 60% in 2004?

Also, Tom Daschle went from like 62% in 1998 to losing in 2004.  Larry Pressler and Russ Feingold might be on that list too.  Slade Gorton went from 56% in 1994 to losing in 2000.
23  General Politics / Political Geography & Demographics / Re: any of you guys interested in re-creating old districts to see what the on: October 26, 2011, 09:34:21 pm

Virginia in the 1960s.  The 8th is a little bit overcrowded.  The 8/10 border might be a little off.

Here are the Pres numbers for each of them:

VA-1:  51.8/48.2 Obama
VA-2:  70.0/30.0 Obama
VA-3:  57.1/42.9 Obama
VA-4:  50.2/49.8 Obama
VA-5:  57.4/42.6 McCain
VA-6:  55.2/44.8 McCain
VA-7:  55.0/45.0 McCain
VA-8:  52.2/47.8 Obama
VA-9:  63.5/36.5 McCain
VA-10: 64.7/35.3 Obama
24  General Politics / Political Geography & Demographics / Re: US House Redistricting: Kentucky on: October 26, 2011, 08:11:16 pm
Last time, Republicans were trying to get Oldham County moved into the 3rd to help Anne Northup.  After Ken Lucas won relatively big in 1998, it was assumed  that he was pretty safe.  Only after Don Bell ran closer than expected in 2000 did Republicans think that they could get the 4th back.
