Presidential Elections - Analysis and Discussion / 2016 U.S. Presidential Election / Re: National Review: Ted Cruz is eyeing presidential run

There can be no doubt but what Cruz is a rising star in the Republican party.
He is without question absolutely brilliant, certainly Obama's equal in intelligence, as well as in his oratorical skills.
However, 2016 will not be his year. If he does run then, I believe it will be more to establish himself in the national consciousness, and as a serious national figure.
If he plays his cards right, he can then run in 2020 as a known quantity, and, should he secure the nomination, pivot somewhat to the center in the campaign.
He is certainly a gifted individual, with a bright future ahead of him.

Presidential Elections - Analysis and Discussion / 2016 U.S. Presidential Election / Re: Could Biden be nominated and win in '16?

Not likely. In fact, I would say next to impossible. Many reasons already stated.
Biden is old hat, even older hat in 2016, and I am not referring only to his age.
Democrats will be looking for renewal seeking to extend to twelve years their occupancy of the Oval Office, not a connection to the past, which is clearly what Biden is. Why do you think that? The last time Demorats tried to extend to twelve years, they went with Clinton's Veep. Gore was younger, more credible, and not as gaffe prone.

He does have some good ideas for the betterment of New Yorkers, however, as a national candidate, he would be an unmitigated disaster.
At times, he gave the impression that he believed nobody else could serve as capably as Mayor as he could, witness his maneuvering in the number of terms a Mayor could serve. Not a desirable attitude to have.
No. Sure he has. Cutting sodium in prepared meals, ordering that menus in chain restaurants carry calorie counts, posting restaurants' health department grades, a ban on the sale of large sugary beverages, requiring stores to conceal tobacco products, banning smoking in public places and otherwise limiting the use of tobacco products. Not all passed, however, all of these measures are for the good of New Yorkers. Transparency in goods is great, but it is a right to be able to drink or consume as much food as you want. Making obese people consume less soda isn't attacking the real problem of obesity. No, but it is a step in the right direction.

Presidential Elections - Analysis and Discussion / 2016 U.S. Presidential Election / Re: A cross party ticket

I have long been a proponent of cross party tickets.
However, in reality, they are impractical, except in times of national crises, i.e. Lincoln/Johnson.
There have been national unity governments historically, during World War I in Canada, and during World War I and World War II in the U.K., consisting of members of government and opposition parties.
With the polarizing politics in the U.S., I cannot see a cross party ticket coming to the fore anytime in the near future in the U.S.
