Secession is explicitly illegal, so no. No state(s) should be allowed to leave the union, period.
Even if a supermajority votes to leave? How very liberal and Democratic of you.

I think repealing Roe v. Wade has a less shaky constitutional basis than repealing Gregg v. Georgia, unfortunately.
there's no such thing as 'constitutional basis'. the J's have a political or moral position and then couch it in plausible or semi-plausible legal argument. True, especially with folks like Scalia.

FF, a rarity for a Green Party candidate for the Presidency. It's a shame she believes the luddite bullsh**t about GM plants and nuclear power, though.
I don't know about GM plants, but nuclear power really doesn't seem to me like the kind of issue that makes you worthy of being called an idiot if you disagree with it. Things like wind and solar power are clearly preferable to nuclear power, which doesn't produce radioactive waste. Also, if a wind turbine fails, it falls on some cows. If a nuclear power plant fails, well... So, honestly, I think you're overreacting about nuclear power.

For example, I am theoretically a revolutionary socialist of the anarchist variety, yet I'm something of a pacifist who tends to oppose all coercion (when I'm not flying off the handle) aside from actions made in self-defense...so it's a bit complicated for me. More than I think I've ever really let on here.

Apology accepted! Now that you're less radical, try coming back to Atlasia some time. Oh, I'm not less radical. I'm just less trollish (and I'm going to be more sincere) about my actual political beliefs, which are still quite radical.

I realize that lately I've been a trollish dick. So from now on I'm going to try to be more sincere in my posting, and whatnot.
I truly am sorry, especially for any offense that may have been caused by the trollish things I've said. My views are (at least, in my opinion) far more rational than I've let on -- for example, I don't really think that opponents of Bradley Manning are evil psychos who should all be smothered with a pillow. I just get a bit hot-headed at times and lose myself. And while I don't care much for the policies of the state of Israel, I don't really have a sincere conviction that it's a racist terrorist apartheid state -- I try to not blather on about issues I don't know a whole lot about.
Signed, Morgan

Questions and Answers / Presidential Election Process / Re: Electoral College or Popular Vote?

The idea that candidates would only campaign in big cities is dumb for two reasons: 1) Even if you took all the U.S. cities with over a million people, you wouldn't get a very high percentage of the U.S. population. 2) Candidates pretty much only campaign in swing states anyways. Also: big cities tend to vote Democratic, so Republicans wouldn't care all that much about them. I'd suggest watching this video.

A better approach would be to reform the prison system to focus on rehabilitation and treating prisoners like human beings rather than cattle. Norway's prison system is like this, and they not only have a very low rate of re-offense, but Norwegian prisons (and the prisons in other Nordic countries, I believe) are very safe. But of course, this doesn't matter, because most Americans care more about bullsh#t philosophy on whether or not prisoners deserve more than slop that wouldn't even be served in an elementary school cafeteria. And then there's the classic "oh, don't use a European country as an example! America's different!" line.

Other Elections - Analysis and Discussion / Congressional Elections / Re: Probability of Democrats re-taking the House / retaining the Senate

Dems have a much better chance of taking the House than they're being given credit for, IMO. If Obama wins by more than 4% or so, then it can definitely happen.
I think we should be okay in the Senate. King cancels out Nebraska, which we're obviously going to lose. Polling shows Nevada and Massachusetts as ties with a slight GOP advantage at the moment, but I think both will come home for the Democrat the end. And then it's just a matter of winning one of ND, MT, MO, or VA which are tossups.
Scott Brown has a slight lead in Massachusetts? What is this, I don't even.
