General Politics / U.S. General Discussion / Re: SurveyUSA: California Death Penalty unlikely to be repealed (but many undecided)

I just registered to vote today. I'm pretty sure I'm going to vote to repeal, but I'm not 100% decided.
As ○∙◄☻¥tπ[╪AV┼cVê└ said, it's a no-brainer: The death penalty wastes millions in a state that doesn't even have the money, and it's not even used. Not to mention the fact that pretty much every country that claims to at least kinda believe in human rights has abolished it, including Canada. The idea that the death penalty is a deterrent is farcical. All that remains in favor of the death penalty is that it makes some sick black-hearted people feel warm and fuzzy on the inside, which isn't enough to warrant giving the state the power to commit homicide.

General Politics / U.S. General Discussion / Re: MSNBC going even too far for my tastes

Protip: don't watch American 24 hour news/analysis/etc. channels. Al-Jazeera English is an awesome network, which you can watch live through their website. They have quite a bit of U.S. political analysis. Their show Fault Lines covers U.S. issues exclusively. It's probably further to the left than any stations like MSNBC or CNN. They're very open to alternative views that would be career suicide on any U.S. network. And they don't kiss the ass of either major party.

General Politics / U.S. General Discussion / Re: Obama policies and the Islamic world

The problem is that you are unable to perceive what is rather obvious.
Obama has consistently been sucking up to Islamic loonies, and has repeatedly disrespected Israel, maintaining that such policies make the United States more respected in the Islamic world.
Facts indicate that this is NOT the case!
Not being a bigot isn't "sucking up to Islamic loonies." And so f#cking what if Obama "disrespects" Israel? Must every president bow to this tiny country that's smaller than Armenia and more than a thousand miles away? How many times has Israel done something for you that warrants bowing down to it and getting your panties in a bunch to defend it?

Regarding 'Nam:
I hardly see OH NOES COMMUNISM as a valid reason to force thousands of young men (my father included) to fight for a cause that does not concern them and either...
A) Get killed. B) Get maimed. C) Become haunted forever by the image of your friends' grey matter on the wall.
Especially when you consider that South Vietnam was a dictatorship.
And overall, conscription is a moral evil. But I digress...

Let's not forget how Mitt Romney protested for the Vietnam War draft before he got his deferment and went to France.
snip
Seriously...this guy is such the entitled elitist parody it is hard to imagine this isn't just some practical joke being played on America
Well, it would've been much harder to fight in Vietnam without the draft... Would've been easier if we had never gone there to begin with.

I don't quite get the question.
You mean where my schoolmates have moved? I looked up one girl I knew in elementary school on Facebook a while back, and she lived somewhere in CA other than the L.A. metro area. A lot of the people I was "friends" with in elementary school are still around, and last I heard go to the same community college as me.
Overall I don't really care about them.

General Politics / Individual Politics / Re: Question about Israel vs Palestine support
|
on: September 09, 2012, 08:03:40 pm

I support Israel. Israel is the only stable democracy in the middle-east (possibly excepting Turkey). It stood as a bulwark against Communism in the 20th Century, and as a bulwark against Terrorism in the 21st. The idea of giving the Palestianians a state, when 50 years ago it would have become another appendage of the Soviet Union, and at this present point would become a haven for Islamic Terrorists, is a superficial, dangerous, wrong headed and thoroughly strange idea.
Did you know that Israel was founded upon Socialism? Meh, you could call it socialism. But remember, at the same time, most other western countries were busy creating socialist institutions, e.g. Britain with the NHS. My point is that it was still a stable, anti-communist democracy, therefore it was worthy of our support, and today it still is a democracy, and it stands against terrorism, so it is still worthy of support. And if it was a "pro-communist" democracy it would be worthy of a CIA-backed coup, amiright?
