Now let's have fun and threw more examples!
Jim Folsom, Jr. (D-AL), AKA "Three Strikes, Motherf**ker!"
This is easily my favorite example. Lil' Jim unseated an incumbent Senator in primary. Since it was Alabama, he could now confidently lay back and plan his inevitable inauguration... except the year turned out to be 1980 and he got narrowly beaten by Jeremiah Denton, riding on Reagan's Coattails. ONE.
So, he decided to start over smaller, being elected Lieutenant Governor in 1986 and reelected in 1990. Then, in 1993, Guy Hunt was convicted of some nasty financial stuff, which automatically installed Folsom as Governor.
Despite short tenure, he was a helluva good Governor, bringing, among other things, Mercedes plant to Alabama (thing states were literally killing each other for). With high approvals, he again laid back. After all, his opponent was no Vietnam hero, but a joke called "Fob" James, who just happened to be Governor like 100 years ago... except it was a year of the "Republican Revolution". James upset Folsom by a tiny margin. TWO.
So Jim got busy with other things, missing his best chance to be elected Governor in 1998. In 2006, he became bored and ran for Lieutenant Governor again, winning the office. He ran for an unprecedented fourth term in 2010... oh, nother Republican wave, another close defeat. YOU'RE OUT!
Endicott Peabody (D-MA)
A descendant of the freaking New England aristocracy, had he been born in earlier times, he'd be extremely successfull politician.
But after losing several bids, he finally got elected Governor in 1962 by a ridiculous margin. A quite effective one, after just two years he got primaried by his own Lieutenant.
After that, he waged even more campaigns for various offices (Senator, Veep) in various states. Lulz.

Well, I've known Fritz on the forums for a LONG time... Maybe it seems longer than it has been in real time because forum time often moves slowly for me. Anyway, Fritz is a good guy. I was his SOIA in Atlasia and I did try hard to do right by him although we didn't communicate as often as I'd have liked to, but still, he did give me an office I tried to work in. Overall, I think he's an institution here. I don't see his posts all that often anymore.
Actually, I removed you when you gone missing, when I acted as President *skip*

While I like an idea of reducing nuclear arsenals, I don't think the world would be better off without it. There were many armed conflicts after 1945, but not another total war because of the nukes.
Discuss.

"Didn't realize the Japs were such fans of Gilbert and Sullivan," quipped Fred Vinson, who was another old Senate colleague of Truman's and the Secretary of the Treasury.
Vinson never served in the Senate, though he indeed was an old friend of Harry. Otherwise, great piece. I hope you'll continue this time.

Sorry, I just can't vote FF for any politically active race baiter, regardless of how good the rest of his policies were.
Lester Maddox is a good example of this. Right, he was surprisingly moderate and effective Governor, but he never apologized for his violently racist past, always maintaining he did a "right thing."
I could vote FF had Faubus changes his positions for better while Governor. That'd be a very courageous act. But he did not until retirement.
I would vote FF for Fritz Hollings because, despite starting off as segregationist, he actually undertake a very courageous steps toward intergation and peaceful trasition while still Governor. That was something that took guts and he risked his political future. Doing George Wallace of Ross Barnett would be cheap and safe. He didn't.
I would vote FF for Lister Hill. He did support segregation, but never used hateful rethorics nor played major role in resisting civil rights bills, while being useful in transition. I believe what he did in other areas for all Americans (like health care) outweights nominal support for Jim Crow.
Millions of Southerners supported segregation for variety of reasons. Mostly, because they were brought up in this belief. It's not easy to overcome this and it's unfair to cast all of them as pure evil. I can't say what I would believe if I were born in the Old South. None of you can.
That being said, there's a difference between a nominal and non-malignant support for "old ways" and being a race baiterl

This is really tricky one.
President of the Japanese puppet state, created in place of the rightful regime. So, according to most definition, he's automatically a quisling. Yet, he's been recognized as one of the legitimate Presidents of the Phillippines and continued to have a prominent political career after the war.

So you can mock Jeff's religion, because religion mocks itself; that has essentially no impact on getting Jeff to stop doing harmful habits.
Jeff doesn't even act like a real Christian. Does Jesus approve of lying, taking advantage of others while avoiding any responsibility? "Religion" is a very useful for him as an excuse to keep his ways.
