One problem I am having. Sometimes, when I open certain applications (Outlook, Excel) I am taken straight to the desktop. I can see that the application is open by the icon on the taskbar underneath the desktop. But I can't seem to bring up the application window on my screen, no matter how hard I try. Restarting the computer seems to fix this. Any ideas?
This has continued to be a problem for me- until now. Windows 8 is schizophrenic- its like two operating systems in one, and you must use them both. Applications that are specifically designed for Windows 8, including the version of Internet Explorer that it comes with, run from Start and don't use the desktop. Anything not specifically designed for Windows 8 (including Outlook, Excel) runs from the desktop. You can create tiles in Start for these apps, and the system then takes you through the desktop to get to the app. My problem has been with these desktop apps. I just could not bring up the app window. I could get a little picture of the app window by hovering over the taskbar icon, but I couldn't bring it up. I also noticed that all of my desktop icons disappeared when this was happening. Then I would restart, and everything works fine again. I tried getting online help from Microsoft. They wanted to connect to my computer remotely. We couldn't do this because I had the exact same problem with the connection app they sent me. So they gave up, and told me to contact a "local technician." I have no idea who they expected me to call. My genius roommate figured out a solution. We determined that this was happening after the computer had been idle for a while. So he went to the control panel, and changed the power settings to NEVER "go to sleep." And voila- problem fixed. This problem does not appear to be common, and I cannot explain what caused it. I am debating whether I should take any further action. At any rate, I will now join the rest of the world in proclaiming, I HATE WINDOWS 8!

The overwhelming consensus I have heard, both here and elsewhere, is that Windows 8 sucks. Really, its not that bad...you just have to get used to using the Start screen instead of the desktop. I use the Window key to get back to Start most of the time. I have a tile in Start for Atlas Forum, and other favorite websites. One thing that bothers me is that the date and time are not always visible. I downloaded a live tile clock that you put in Start, so at least I can see the time from there. At any rate, I am stuck with it whether I like it or not.

So I got a computer for Christmas, and it came with Windows 8. Takes a little getting used to...its all about the Start screen, which is used instead of the desktop. Anyone else using this? What do you think? Any tips for newbies?

General Discussion / Constitution and Law / Re: Why can I not vote for President six times?

There is absolutely no bar to a State letting you directly vote for which six Electors you wish to have represent you. Indeed, it has been done in the past. The flaw (or feature) of doing that was that it was possible in a close election for a State's electoral slate to end up divided. The most recent case where a divide occurred was in Alabama in the 1960 Democratic primary. Others I recall happening are Califonia in 1912 where 11 Roosevelt and 2 Wilson electors were chosen, and New Jersey in 1860 which had a strange result. In New Jersey, the Douglas, Breckenridge, and Bell campaigns attempted a fusion ticket, with three Douglas electors and four electors from the Bell and Breckenridge camps (not certain how they were split). Anyway, the three Douglas electors ended up getting the most votes, but four of the seven Lincoln electors got seats four thru seven, with the Bell and Breckenridge electors left behind.
Interesting...this site lists Douglas as the winner (but Lincoln got more EV) and 0 votes for Breckenridge and Bell.

I can't decide if I am excited or disappointed about this. The production itself was magnificent, as is to be expected. I did think it was too long, and the story dragged. There seemed to be more time devoted to combat scenes than advancing the story. There were three or four points toward the end of the film where I thought, this is the end of it, and the movie continued on. Jackson's alterations and additions to the story sometimes seem to make it more interesting, other times seem to be adding just for the sake of making a longer movie. The bad news is, Jackson is trying to make The Hobbit into something that it is not- an epic saga comparable to LOTR. The good news is, same.
I can see one more movie out of this, but two more is a stretch.
