1  Presidential Elections - Analysis and Discussion / 2016 U.S. Presidential Election / Re: Why not Al Franken? on: Today at 02:50:16 pm
The media wouldn't let someone that liberal have a chance.
2  General Politics / U.S. General Discussion / Re: Another day, another scandal: umbrellagate on: Today at 02:11:23 pm
Republicans think ordering the military to attack a country for no no good reason without a formal declaration of war, that leads to a $1 trillion war is OK, but umbrella duty is a scandal? I think the Republican party has officially jumped the shark.
3  Forum Community / Forum Community / Re: Opinion of saying "I could care less" on: Today at 04:14:26 am
When it comes to the English language, I can't think of anything else that bothers me more.

So, you could not care more? I think we know what another logical way of writing "I could not care more" is.
4  General Politics / Individual Politics / Re: Rank US Presidents Left to Right on: Today at 03:27:56 am
Voteview has this, although LBJ to the right of Clinton doesn't sound right.
Obama being the most conservative Democrat, and Eisenhower the most liberal Republican makes sense, though.

5  General Politics / U.S. General Discussion / Re: Acting IRS Director fired on: Today at 02:54:52 am
It sounds like it was just one poorly run office. Not much of a scandal, really.

6  Presidential Elections - Analysis and Discussion / U.S. Presidential Election Results / Re: Maps of the white vote by presidential election on: Today at 02:49:12 am
New York has a lot of minorities, but still amazing that Obama got 63% of the vote there and lost the white vote.
7  General Politics / International General Discussion / Re: Hash presents: Recent International Electoral History as Told by GIFs on: Today at 02:44:06 am
Canada 1993 and US House of Representatives 1894 would be interesting, to say the least.
8  Presidential Elections - Analysis and Discussion / 2016 U.S. Presidential Election / Re: Rand Paul courts Evangelicals, talks War on Drugs on: Today at 02:18:22 am
Well, Rand Paul is to the right of Washington and Colorado voters on marijuana legalization. Not much of a libertarian there.
9  General Politics / International General Discussion / Re: And now Brazil! on: May 18, 2013, 01:12:44 am
South America has become the first continent where a majority of gays can legally marry.  Brazil has more than half of the continent's population, even without Argentina and Uruguay.

Don't forget the French Guiana. I bet they don't even know they have gay marriage yet.

After ages of California politicians trying to make the situation seem rosier than it is, we have this.

Analyst pegs revenue $3.2B higher than Gov. Brown

SACRAMENTO, Calif.—The state's independent budget analyst said Friday that California will take in $3.2 billion more in tax revenue than Gov. Jerry Brown estimated, providing Democratic lawmakers an argument to funnel more money into state programs and setting up a spending showdown with the administration.
The Legislative Analyst's Office released its assessment of Brown's revenue and spending plan just days after the governor's budget update for the fiscal year starting July 1. It said the administration's figures do not reflect the improving economy, including higher capital gains from stock sales.
"We do not agree with the administration's view that there has been a significant dimming of the state's near-term economic prospects," the analyst wrote.

11  General Politics / U.S. General Discussion / Re: Reid to revisit nuke option in July? on: May 18, 2013, 12:45:58 am
At this point, the filibuster is the football, Reid is Lucy, and anyone who believes him is Charlie Brown.
12  General Politics / U.S. General Discussion / Re: Americans are killing each other a lot less than we used to on: May 18, 2013, 12:40:13 am
Fatal car accidents are decreasing too, but I don't think people are arguing for more lax safety standards or more drunk driving as a result.
13  General Politics / U.S. General Discussion / Re: President John Adams signs Alien and Seditions Act on: May 18, 2013, 12:34:07 am
I hear #xyzaffair is trending on Twitter. Probably because it has an easy to remember name.
14  General Politics / U.S. General Discussion / Re: Department of Education to make $51 billion in profit on student loans this year on: May 18, 2013, 12:29:20 am
And yet the banks get 0% loans at the expense of the federal deficit. Makes perfect sense.

Rebel caught on video eating heart of dead soldier: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-22523804 (not a link to the actual video)

Surprised nobody posted it... not.

The west supporting a rebellion by radical Islamists in a proxy war against Russia. Hasn't this happened before?

Don't worry, we always stay good friends with our allies in that part of the world like the Afghan Mujahideen and Saddam Hussein.
16  General Politics / Political Geography & Demographics / Re: Map: Apportionment of the House using the Cube Root Rule (675 members) on: May 17, 2013, 02:51:36 am

Smiley

Poor, poor Vermont. Sad

But nonetheless, these numbers make so much more sense.

DC would be rooting for Vermont and Wyoming to each gain a congressional seat.
17  Forum Community / Forum Community / Re: Moderate Hero on: May 17, 2013, 01:17:50 am
Basically the Golden Mean Fallacy in human form, with a generally flaky and easily offended attitude on top of it. It's not only what Antonio alluded to (priding yourself in constant moderation, or taking the moderate path because it "feels" right) but also outright hostility to black or white positions, for seemingly no other reason than they are black or white positions. On some issues, the extreme or incredibly straightforward/blunt approach is sometimes the correct one. Basically, Moderate Heroes are nice and happy sounding but hold logically inconsistent or inefficient beliefs just because, deep down, they think being moderate lends them some sort of cachet.

Economic stimulus is a good example of how to detect moderate heroism: Do you think increasing food stamp aid (just as one issue from that category) is a good idea in times of economic weakness? If I propose an additional 20 billion in food stamp funds, the moderate hero response wouldn't be "Yes, this will expand the program and help those in need" or "No, because food stamps are not much more effective in times of crisis" it would be "Okay, but just 15 billion instead." There is no logical consistency to that position, because it apparently accepts the premise that food stamp benefits are a good thing and that expanding them is a good thing, but it reduces the effectiveness for no apparent reason. That is what a Moderate Hero position is like.

LOL, awesome cartoon on moderate heroism.

18  General Politics / U.S. General Discussion / Re: Did Republicans alter the Benghazi emails to make Obama look bad? on: May 17, 2013, 12:15:27 am
People who believe in Benghazi believe CBS News works for the White House.  You couldn't convince them this happened if you actually showed them it happened.

True, there's not much reasoning you can do with the 49% who think that ACORN stole the 2012 election.
19  General Politics / U.S. General Discussion / Re: Did Republicans alter the Benghazi emails to make Obama look bad? on: May 16, 2013, 10:58:59 pm
Looks like the cover up is on the Republican side.

21  Other Elections - Analysis and Discussion / Gubernatorial/Statewide Elections / Re: California has multi billion dollar surplus on: May 16, 2013, 02:44:36 am
Remember when tons of Republicans were saying how California was screwed because Brown was elected? Epic fail, guys.
22  General Politics / U.S. General Discussion / Re: Government subpoenas, obtains wide set of AP phone records in investigation on: May 15, 2013, 04:45:20 am
Republicans sure didn't care when the IRS during the Bush administration threatened to revoke a church's non-tax status for having a sermon that criticized the Iraq war. Hypocrites to the max.

Has he congratulated Hitler for being Christian?
24  General Politics / U.S. General Discussion / Re: Polls on Same-Sex Marriage State Laws on: May 15, 2013, 12:02:13 am
Does Arizona have an Initiative system in place? That way they could bypass the legislature entirely.

Yes, but a constitutional amendment requires a ton of voters to sign the petition, 15% of those who voted in the last gubernatorial election, or a bit over 250K.  I don't see that happening anytime soon.

For an issue like Gay Marriage, I think it could happen.

It's certainly more likely than the legislative method.
25  Other Elections - Analysis and Discussion / Gubernatorial/Statewide Elections / Re: Another NY state senator caught in a bribery scandal on: May 14, 2013, 11:51:20 pm
Duh. The State Senate here is a cesspool.

Sounds about right. I'm not a huge Cuomo supporter, but I do approve of the take-no-prisoners approach that he's taken toward the State Senate. If only we could go unicameral.

Letting the State Senate draw an insanely gerrymandered map for themselves is "take-no prisoners"?
