Latest Post: Why the Florida Democratic Party is Failingon 2013-12-29 10:26:31
When people think of Florida, they think of white sandy beaches, orange groves, and famous attractions such as Universal, Busch Gardens, and one that all people across the United States knows about: didney worl     Yes, of course we all know about Didney Worl, but one of the most prominent things about the state of Florida is how closely contested in elections each year. From the famous 2000 election, where 500 votes determined the next President of the United States, to 2010, when Rick Scott, the Republican candidate for Governor, defeated Alex Sink, the Democratic candidate, by a single percent. The same was for the 2012 presidential election, when President Obama beat Governor Romney by a single point. But elections in Florida should not be this close, not at all. In Florida, there are 11,812,274 voters, and of that there are 4.6 million Democrats, counting everybody up there are 500,000 more Democrats in the state than Republicans, so that should make a state leaning Democratic, right? Wrong. In 2010, the Democratic Party nominated Kendrick Meek for Senate, he was a gentleman, connected well with voters, but he only received 20% of the vote statewide, and won a single county, Gadsden County, where the majority of the population is black. Why did he lose, and in such a big way? Well there are two candidates responsible for that: Charlie Crist and Marco Rubio. Crist was the Governor of Florida at the time, he was a very moderate Republican, and he was eyeing a Senate seat, unfortunately another man, the former Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, Marco Rubio, wanted in as well. When polling consistently showed Governor Crist behind Speaker Rubio, he registered as an Independent and ran, and he got 2nd place in 2010, with 30% of the vote, while Rubio carried the state in a big victory winning nearly 50% of the vote. Charlie Crist was pretty close in winning a few of the Northern Florida counties, that have a majority of voters registered as Democrats, and Kendrick Meek fell behind in these counties. The reason? Democrats in North Florida do not want liberals, they are Southern Democrats by definition. These voters want moderate Democrats, they want people who seem to care about their needs. There is a reason Alex Sink won Liberty County and Franklin County, counties that President Obama lost to Governor Romney by 41 points and 32 points, respectively. She is the version of a moderate hero(ine), she connected well with these voters and tried to get their votes. She almost won this state in a Republican year, where the Republican candidate won a U.S. Senate seat by more than 20%. The reason Democrats even hold an advantage is that Northern Democrats give the Democratic Party in Florida their backbone, they are the people that make up the 500,000 voter registration difference, but the Florida Democratic Party continues to run liberal candidates that alienate Northerners and act surprised when they lose. There is something very, very wrong when the 2nd congressional district has 75,000 more registered Democrats than Republicans, but the Democrat loses the race by eight thousand votes. The Democratic Party in Florida can thrive in this state, they can organize all they want, but the only way for this party thrive is to stop having so many Alan Grayson's and Kendrick Meek's, and to begin filling the party with Bill Nelson's and Alex Sink's. And as a Florida Democrat, I want to urge the party in Tallahassee to begin fielding moderates, to begin to build up the party statewide and organize like an actual statewide party. I want to tell y'all that we are not the Green Party, but we are the Democratic Party, and we can't keep going on like this.
