Well Roe v Wade is about something even bigger that abortion in many legal circles. it is about legislating from the bench and making law out of the constitution which is not there.
First, Look into the Griswold case which begins to make Privacy a fundamental right, which is clearly not in the constitution. Roe only expands this notion and has enraged conservatives for years. Even a lot of liberal jurists and legal scholars will admit this point as well.
Some states have had their legislatures enact law protecting abortion and others would surely ban it, but it would go through the constitutional process rather than invented from the bench.

Sen. Hutchison Says She Won't Run for Gov. By JIM VERTUNO, Associated Press Writer
AUSTIN, Texas - U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (news, bio, voting record) announced Friday that she will run for a third Senate term, ending months of speculation that she would challenge Texas Gov. Rick Perry next year in the Republican primary.
An e-mail distributed by Hutchison's campaign said she would make the formal announcement on June 27, when she would provide details on "why she believes it is in the best interest of Texas."
Hutchison had long been considered a likely challenger to Perry, who is seeking his second full term. He became governor in 2000, after George W. Bush resigned to become president. Perry was elected to a full four-year term in 2002.
"Senator Hutchison has been a true champion for Texas in Washington, D.C., fighting for the interests of our state," Perry said. "Her decision to seek re-election is great news for Texas."
Perry had urged Hutchison to stay in the Senate, saying a brutal GOP primary in March was "not good for Texans."
Some key Texas GOP activists and donors had also privately been urging her to avoid a race that might fracture the party and give Democrats a chance to build political momentum.
Perry, who has never lost an election, had been courting religious conservatives in recent weeks in anticipation of a race with Hutchison, who is considered a moderate. Hutchison, who will likely win re-election with little opposition, is poised rise to the No. 3 position in the GOP leadership in the Senate after the 2006 election.

Other Elections - Analysis and Discussion / Congressional Elections / Re: Another poll for WV Senate

It worked very well in 2004 in SD. The thought was Minority leader or member of the majority that can get things done and down went the minority leader. Dems have no chance of taking the senate in 2006, shall WV send another senator into the minority?
Using that logic you could argue that why should *any* state bother to elect a Democratic senator; in fact why bother with more than one party at all?

A Democrat will Challenge Sanders: Evan as national Democrats discuss the possibility of backing U.S. Representative Bernie Sanders (I-VT) for the U.S. Senate, former state Senate President Peter Shumlin (D-VT) announced his intention of running for the Democratic nomination. With Governor Jim Douglas (R-VT) disclaiming interest in the open Senate seat, Lieutenant Governor Brian Dubie (R-VT) is getting the most Republican attention. But other Republicans are also looking at the Congressional races. Former State House Speaker Walter Freed (R-VT) said he was noncommittal about whether he would return to political life. "I haven't ruled anything out so far. There's always that political bug that nags."

Thought ths would be a good thread as we could have a heck of a race here in 2006.
Independant and Socialist Candidate and US Rep running for the senate vs a GOP contender and a Dem contender. I say Dem contender as I am about to post an article about that. Then with Gov Douglas out, it could be interesting.
Also the House seat is now open.

Rehnquist and O'Conner will retire under Bush 43 sometime.
I also believe that Stevens or Ginsburg may retire or die off. Stevens looks and acts good for 85. Ginsburg always looks sickly in person and has had fights with cancer.
the real question is who will be the next Chief Justice. I would say Scalia and then imagine te fight in Congress.
Or imagine a Chief Justice Thomas, first black Chief Justice and appointed by a Republican President (Bush 41) and elevated by his son (Bush 43)

Well Bus used it pretty effectively in 2002 and the grass roots of GOP uses it strongly to rally the base to try and get an up or down vote. There are topics on filibustering and the Nuclear option...mostly in General debate. I don't think there's a topic on how the ongoing debate affects congressional races, though. How does it affect them? Someone who actually has something to say, step forth and be heard.

beginning to remember why I left this forum... I write in my own name for Senator fromt eh great State of South Dakota
jravnsbo /s/
Again....if you now live within the State of South Dakota....you must change your registration. But since you are registered from Minnesota (and were registered from MN 20 days before the election) then you MUST cast your vote from that state. Really? In Sweden ona can cast a vote in one place, even though one is regsitered somewhere else. I think JR just meant that he was in SD at the time of his vote.
