The Republican primary was smooth, a coalition of conservatives and the eventual endorsement of former president Reagan, Goldwater Jr. was the standard bearer of the party, choosing Governor DuPont as his running mate. The Democratic primary was interesting, with 4 challengers to the president, many though that it would be conservative wing, with one challenger would prevail. But instead the liberal/progressive wing of the party split the vote up, causing Hart to not win a majority of delegates. After negotiations with the most prestigious of his challengers, Ted Kennedy, an agreement was set forth that Kennedy would take the VP slot.

Now, shirked by both parties, the more centrist candidates formed a coalition to run an independent campaign to "Represent Middle America." This was headed by former Vice-President Edward Brooke, who chose governor Bob Graham to unite the center around this ticket.
