A former president might prefer the candidate from the other party. But problably, he will not admit his preference in public in order to not damage his image in his party. He has the option to vote in secret for the candidate from the other party. But this is not the most rational choice. The probability of a single vote decide the election is almost zero. The probability of a hidden person is recording a video of the polling place with a cell phone or a digital camera is very low, but is still a little bit higher than the probability of a single vote decide the election. So, it is better for the former president (or former losing candidate) to avoid this risk and vote for the candidate of his own party even if he considers in private that the candidate of the other party is better.
